DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
CHEM 125- BASIC CHEMISTRY (3 credits)
COURSE SYLLABUS
Chairman of the Chemistry Department: Prof. Mahmoud K. Faraj
Coordinator of Chemistry 125:Ogaritte Yazbeck,Ph.D.
GRADE DISTRIBUTION:
The grading system must entered in the system during the first week of the semester.
EXAM Grade % Time
Exam1 30 % 75 minutes
Exam2 30 % 75 minutes
Final Exam 40 % 120 minutes
FINAL EXAM : Covers all material after Exam I.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course will cover the fundamental principles of chemistry such as atomic structure and
bonding, periodic properties which govern chemical reactions of elements. The course focuses
on mass relationship in chemical reactions and on reactions in solution mixtures. The basic
concepts of the properties of gases, chemical equilibrium, and thermochemistry will be also
covered.
COURSE OUTCOME:
At the end of this course, the student should be very confident of his knowledge about matter, it’s
structure and intrinsic properties. He will understand the key concepts of atomic and molecular
structure and the basics of chemical reactivity.
TEXT BOOK:
Raymound Chang: Chemistry, McGraw Hill, 9th
edition, 2008.
Student Solution Manual to accompany Raymound Chang, 9th
edition.
POLICY:
Please refer to the university policies and procedures. Students are expected to attend all lectures.
Attendance will be taken daily in classroom. Absence from any exam must be reported
immediately to the instructor and a formal petition must be handed to the department. MAKE-UP
EXAMs will be conducted only under very strict circumstances (death, excusable illness) once
the petition from the science department has been accepted, otherwise a grade of ZERO will be
given to missing any of the exams.
EXAMS DATES:
The dates of exam I and II are set by the chemistry department and are included on the syllabus.
The exact time and location of the exams will be specified by the in department near the exam
date. No changes of these dates will be allowed for any reason.

  • 1. Chemistry 160- Freshman Chemistry 1/4 2011- 2012 DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY CHEM 125- BASIC CHEMISTRY (3 credits) COURSE SYLLABUS Chairman of the Chemistry Department: Prof. Mahmoud K. Faraj Coordinator of Chemistry 125:Ogaritte Yazbeck,Ph.D. GRADE DISTRIBUTION: The grading system must entered in the system during the first week of the semester. EXAM Grade % Time Exam1 30 % 75 minutes Exam2 30 % 75 minutes Final Exam 40 % 120 minutes FINAL EXAM : Covers all material after Exam I. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will cover the fundamental principles of chemistry such as atomic structure and bonding, periodic properties which govern chemical reactions of elements. The course focuses on mass relationship in chemical reactions and on reactions in solution mixtures. The basic concepts of the properties of gases, chemical equilibrium, and thermochemistry will be also covered. COURSE OUTCOME: At the end of this course, the student should be very confident of his knowledge about matter, it’s structure and intrinsic properties. He will understand the key concepts of atomic and molecular structure and the basics of chemical reactivity. TEXT BOOK: Raymound Chang: Chemistry, McGraw Hill, 9th edition, 2008. Student Solution Manual to accompany Raymound Chang, 9th edition. POLICY: Please refer to the university policies and procedures. Students are expected to attend all lectures. Attendance will be taken daily in classroom. Absence from any exam must be reported immediately to the instructor and a formal petition must be handed to the department. MAKE-UP EXAMs will be conducted only under very strict circumstances (death, excusable illness) once the petition from the science department has been accepted, otherwise a grade of ZERO will be given to missing any of the exams. EXAMS DATES: The dates of exam I and II are set by the chemistry department and are included on the syllabus. The exact time and location of the exams will be specified by the in department near the exam date. No changes of these dates will be allowed for any reason.
