Rob Parson and Morgan Stanley
1. Introduction
Rob Parson had recently been hired by Paul Nasr, a senior managing director at Morgan Stanley as a principal in the Capital
Markets Services division. The division had done very little business even with its most important investment banking clients.
In particular the bank wanted to improve business with clients in the financial services industry. Parson was hired for his
proven track record in this domain, for his relationships with clients and for his energetic and entrepreneurial approach. Soon
after he was hired Parson started delivering results and played instrumental role in improving Morgan Stanley s ranking and
market share. He got first time business with several clients and increased business volumes from ... Show more content on

4. Resilience and Assertiveness The tough clientele in financial services domain demanded one to be outgoing, aggressive to
an extent and not someone who got bogged down easily. Parson personified all these qualities.
5. Responsive Parson understood well the importance of being swift in your decision making when serving tough customers
like the banks. Although this made him overlook the company norms on decision making, Parson s alacrity did help earn
business for the firm.
6. Result oriented The faith expressed by Nasr in Parson was justified by the results that Parson delivered. His proven track
record in banking and financial services was further substantiated by his single handed steering of the growth of MS from
being rank tenth to rank second in the business.
As a person Rob Parson demonstrated the following interpersonal skills:
1. Client camaraderie Amongst his clients Parson was known as someone fun to be around. Not only was he popular with them
for his innovative methods and services, but as a companion too they found him amusing and interesting, and seek his
company whenever they were in town.
2. Transparent It is reported that within the firm Parson was always ready to share information with his colleagues and kept
them updated on the new ideas he was coming up with.

Case Study Of Blackberry
Executive Summary
The topic of research for this Marketing Proposal is the decline of the brand Blackberry, in the telecommunication segment of
the market. Just three years ago, Blackberry had a market share of 70% among business customers in North America. This year
that has dropped to 5%. Globally, its business market share has slipped to around 8% from 31% in 2010, according to IDC .
(Knutson, Boulton, Connors, 2013). Blackberry went from one of the leading to one of the declining brands in the
telecommunication segment. This research will consist of mainly exploratory and descriptive research in order to find out why
are sales declining? Why does Blackberry not enjoy the same market share that it used to? Through the means of

My Observation Of A Community Resource At Life Strategies...
For the assignment of participate observation experience, I chose to visit Life Strategies Couneling Services in Beckley, West
Virginia, to gain a better understaning of how the community resource of indvidual therapy and group therapy is experienced
from the client s point of view. I chose to complete my observation of a community resource at Life Strategies Counseling
Services due to its many quality online reviews. In addition, when calling the offices of local community resources, the office
staff at this location was very friendly and open about the possibility of an interview with a provider with the credentials of
MSW. This opportunity has helped me learn criteria related to displaying empathy to a client through expressing lack of
awareness regarding the client s cultural experience (Chung, 2002, p. 157), through the process related to public transportation
in my community.
After doing some research, I was able to find public transportation in my area, known as New River Transit. This service
allows idviduals to schedule an appointment to be picked up and transported to your destination for a fee of $2.50 for a one
way trip. The other option for this provider is waiting at a series of limited designated physical pick up locations. The
experience from using the public transportation service was a little more difficult than my past experiences with public
transportation. In my current location we do not have a bus system that operates past 4:00pm, which made it

Architectures for Scalable Quantum Computation Essay
1. Introduction
A classical computer represents an implementation of a (sub ) Turing machine that is limited by the laws of classical physics.
As such, certain computational problems are either extremely difficult to solve or are intractable (w.r.t. resources). In order to
tackle these problems, a super Turing computational model has been devised and named as the quantum computer [1].
Quantum computation is based on the laws of quantum mechanics and can outperform classical computation in terms of
complexity. The power comes from quantum parallelism that is achieved through quantum superposition [2] and entanglement
[3]. Computability is unchanged so intractable problems are still unsolvable, but the exponential increase in speed means ...

This requires use of large amounts of auxiliary qubits (aka. ancillae). Further fault tolerance is achieved by applying the error
correction codes recursively (in levels) [9], exponentially increasing overhead and reducing fault probability. Due to these
error correction schemes, a single logical qubit is represented by multiple physical qubits. As an example, a single logical qubit
at two levels of recursion is represented by 49 [10] or 81 [11] physical qubits, depending on the error correction code used.
Intuitively, the number of physical qubits required for interesting integer factorisation described in [4] would be in the
thousands. This is a problem because most investments into manufacturing technology went into silicon based devices and
technology such as ion traps [12,13] are not as well developed. Hence, initial proposals for quantum architectures such as the
Quantum Logic Array (QLA) [14] are space inefficient and somewhat impractical. This review attempts to give an outline of
the current state of quantum computing architectures based on the QLA and provide critical comments.
2. Review
The quantum logic array (QLA) [14], designed by Metodi et al., is one the first complete architectural designs of a trapped ion
quantum computer based on the quantum charge coupled device architecture in [13]. However, as it is the first attempt at

The Mozart Effect and Infant Intelligence
In modern society intelligence is highly competitive and subject to scrutiny; therefore, it is understandable that a child s
intelligence is a primary concern for many parents. The Mozart effect, popularised in the 1990s, resulted in many parents
believing that simply exposing their child to music composed by Mozart would improve their intelligence (Campbell, 1997).
The claim was founded by research published in the journal Nature, which suggested that spatial reasoning could be
temporarily enhanced by listening to one of Mozart s compositions for ten minutes (Rauscher, Shaw Ky, 1993). It will be
argued that there is not sufficient evidence to support the claim that playing Mozart to babies will increase their intelligence.
Firstly, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A study intending to emulate the results expressed in the original study was performed on preschool aged children exposing
them to similar variables as those in the original study (Hui, 2007). The study showed no empirical evidence that listening to
Mozart is more beneficial for children than ulterior conditions (Hui, 2007). This disproves the belief that listening to Mozart
makes a child smarter also making the generalization from the Rauscher et al (1993) inconclusive. There are also a number of
other factors that have been overlooked when comparing the finding of the original study to the Mozart effect in children.
Another discerning factor expressed in the original study was the test used to assess intelligence between the participants. The
portion of the Stanford Binet test used in the original study focuses on one aspect of intelligence, namely, spatial reasoning
(Rauscher et al, 1993). Therefore, it would be invalid to assume that high scores on this specific test delineate an increase in
overall general intelligence. The test itself is also bias as specific cultures outperform others, as cultural environment has an
influence on intelligence, which may lead to deficits in the results found (Weinberg, 1989). Sternberg (2004) found that IQ
tests are effective at predicting academic success in western individuals but are not conclusive measures of overall intelligence
or ability to succeed. Gardner (1999) also proposed that IQ test also

Flaws In Volleyball Research Paper
The girls who played volleyball in the clip, are decent players, however there are some significant flaws in their gameplay. The
first aspect that needs work is their teamwork. Their teamwork and lack of communication is poor, as the girls bumped into
each other, and never set the ball for their team mate to spike. To improve this, name calling should be suggested if you are
going to go for the ball, as this would minimise players running into each other. Another way to improve teamwork is if
strategy was involved. There is no strategy placed in the game, as shown in the clip. The plays of the ball had only one
concept: To get the ball to the other side. There were no sets, leading to no spikes. If the girls planned who would set to who,

Hitler s Conspiracies On The Home Front
On October 7th, 1916, Hitler received a server would to the leg resulting from a shell blast, while stationed near Bapaume. He
was then sent to convalesce at Beelitz, where he healed up. When he had recovered from the injury he went on a trip to nearby
Berlin, for some sight seeing. The capital was suffering from food shortages, and that combined with long working hours for
the munition workers caused work strikes to occur. This is seen as the real reason behind the fall of Germany, a lack of food
and thus lack of mutations. After witnessing this all Hitler labeled them cowards and traitors, showing no empathy for their
plight. The lack of morale for the war was sickening for him and depressed him greatly. Soon. he returned to his regiment ...

The Existence Of Inter Class Friendship
The Existence of Inter Class Friendship in E.M. Forster s A Passage to India
Introduction
Interaction is the source of culture; no man is in a vacuum, each person inevitably interacts with the other people. The
interactions between people foregrounds the rise of human institution and culture in the nation. This is also the case for
different countries and nations. Interaction between different nations has several reasons; it may be cultural, political and
economic. Literature may stands for cultural interaction. International convention may be a political one and trade is the
economic. However, of the three, literature has been more interesting since one can witness politics, culture and economy in a
literary work.
Literary works written from the beginning up to the present are shaped by the nature of interaction. Ancient writers, in their
works, deal with the idea of war and bravery. In the
Odyssey, the earliest written literary work, the second chapter is about Egypt and Phoenicia. He depicts the Phoenicians as
cruel, merciless and barbaric tribes. During the Middle Ages East has a very similar image to that of Homer, but this time
religion shapes the nature of interaction. In Chaucer, for instance, infidels inhabit east; he calls for a crusade (Canterbury
Tales). After the 15th century East becomes the source of wealth, therefore, writers deal with East more seriously. Particularly,
after the modern era, beginning with industrial revolution, east acquires

Research Paper On Isaac Newton s Second Law
Introduction
Isaac Newton:
Is an English scientist who discovered the laws of motion and the gravity.
He was born on Christmas Day in 1642. When he was 21 years of age he discovered gravity and the law of universal
gravitation, where he was sitting one day under an apple tree relaxed, and all of a sudden and in a moment of clarity, an apple
fell on Newton s head, and he began to think of this case, which passed on millions of others without having to pay attention to
it.
Here the inspiration appeared and led to the fact of gravity that why the apple fell down and did not fall up? Then Newton
formulated the law of universal gravitation.
He also proved that there is a force of mutual attraction between the sun and the planets makes the planets ... Show more

phenomena.
Newton s second law
Newton s second law is one of the laws of motion, which was developed by the English scientist Isaac Newton.
This law contributed in the development of rocket science and space science because of the lacking of air resistance in that
deferral, and this law still is one of the first laws that are taught in various fields of science and it is importance for the
interpretation of many of the phenomena and laws that came after. It States that:
The acceleration of the body is directly proportional to body mass and acceleration (Σ force = mass × acceleration) so that the
acceleration of an object depends on two variables the net force acting upon the object and the mass of the object.
This law is counted to be the most powerful law of Newton s three Laws, because it allows quantitative calculations of
dynamics and it explains how do velocities change when forces are applied.
Notice the fundamental of Newton s 2nd Law, a force causes only a change in velocity (an acceleration). This is sometimes
summarized by saying F =

Analysis Of The Flowers By Alice Walker
The setting of Alice Walkers short story The Flowers is important for us, the readers to obtain a perspective of how life was
like growing up for a 10 year old African American girl by the name of Myop. The title of the story is The Flowers. When you
think about flowers, you instantly compare them to being beautiful, pure, and innocent. The title of the The Flowers is a
symbolism that correlates to Myop who is the protagonist of the story. Myop is just like a flower in the beginning of the story.
She s a pure and innocent child but that pure innocence changes when she discovers something that ll change her life forever.

back home where she feels safe which, is an automatic trait that we, as humans carry; go back to a place where you feel
protected. As Myop is on her way back home, she stepped smack onto his eyes (Walker, 76.) Myop stumbled upon a dead man
s body but she isn t afraid of the body, she s more startled and confused at the sighting. She still hasn t yet quite understood
what she was actually seeing because she decides to get closer to pick up a wild pink rose that was near the head of the corpse.
Myop deciding to pick up the wild pink rose despite her seeing the man s body still shows that she still has her innocence and
how she doesn t quite fully understand what was going on. That quickly changes when she sees the rotted remains of a noose
(Walker 77.) When Myop discovered the noose, she realized what had happened. Myop realized that this man was lynched. It
all made sense now. From Myop seeing the man s broken and cracked teeth indicated that this man was attacked by a group of

My Experience At The Bus
If somebody loves something, they will never get sick it. I feel exactly that when I board the bus, packed full to go to track
meets in the springtime. When descending up the three stairs onto the bus, the boys team takes up the whole back half of the
bus and the girls team claims the front half. From front to back, all of the athletes squeeze three bodies into one seat. The guys
in the back chant and yell, in a wonderful mood before the start of the meet while some of the girls team nap or listen to music
or play games to pass the time. Coming from behind, I hear one of my teammates saying I spy with my little eye something
green followed by multiple girls all staring out the windows shooting out quick guesses. Cars zoom by as I stare out my
window, listening to music, just waiting to get to our destination. A lifetime, or so it felt, passed of guys yelling across the bus
and girls singing aloud to music and we were finally at our destination. One by one, we unloaded the bus, bags and all. Boys,
girls and coaches haul bags and coolers and blankets and I take up the rear of the pack. The day is a cold one, the wind is
blowing but the sun is shining down through the clouds. The team crosses the rubber like track and onto the infield surrounded
by the track. Blankets are laid across the green grass for bags to be set down and runners to rest on between and before races.

Comparing The And Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde
Compare the use of secrets with in the two main characters of the both novels Victor Frankenstein and Dr Jekyll (including Mr
Hyde)
Both the novels are based around secrets. Victor and Dr Jekyll both have a big secret that happens in the novel. Both the main
characters have a thirst for knowledge leading to their biggest secrets occurring. Their scientific experiments don t go as
planned and these novels teach us as the reader you can t keep secrets as the truth will always come out.
Victor Frankenstein believes he can create life but for the time of the novel people were very secretive and didn t like change,
they didn t like people knowing their business. The people were not open to the idea of new creations. Many people were
religious so they believed God made life. The same with Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Jekyll kept his lab very secretive as he knew
people would be against his experiments or would not believe in them. Victor is very interested in the key of life it was the
secrets of heaven and earth I desire to learn . Victor wants to know the unknown, he is very interested to search for the secrets
of life. The world was to me a secret which I desire to divine . The curiosity shown by Victor is ultimately what drives him to
try and discover the secret of life. Shelley uses the word divine to mean to figure out , as he searches for a way in which one
can create life, like the way God creates life.

How Divorce Affects Child Development
The change in a family dynamic, such as a divorce, will have a huge impact on a child s development. During childhood,
divorce in a child s early life is one of the most stressful life events that can occur. Although, all children are not affected,
majority of children are more likely to become affected and have a negative impact when it comes to their social and cognitive
development. According to Velez et al (2011), evidence shows that factors such as parental warmth, acceptance, support,
family cohesion and firm rule enforcement are positively associated with engagement efforts and negatively associated with
disengagement efforts (pp. 245). At a young age, if children are experienced with a change in their family dynamic, this will

Cell And Breast Cancers And Colorectal Cancer
An antimetabolite, 5FU is a pyrimidine analog that irreversibly inhibits TS. Thymidine is a nucleoside and a major component
of the DNA and is hence required by cells for proliferation. Deoxyuridine monophostate (dUMP) upon methylation by TS
generates thymidine monophostate (dTMP). 5FU interrupts the activity of TS and creates a shortage in the levels of dTMP.
Thus the rapidly proliferating cells undergo death due to lack of thymidine nucleoside. The drug has successful applications in
colorectal and breast cancers and is used in various combination therapies with methotrexate (Maddur et al., 2009). The

Decision Support Systems
Introduction The outcome of a situation can sometimes be determined by the choices that have been made. Decisions are made
by individuals based on the surrounding factors. The type of jobs or where one resides are some of the decisions that are made.
In addition, one can be faced with problems that he or she must resolve in order to learn from it. In the business world
decisions are made based on the given factors that are presented. Organizations can use the assistance of a decision support

Artificial intelligence of the system can be utilized to make quick decisions (Turban, Sharda, Delen, 2011). A patient may have
visit one facility, but next time visits another facility. The patient records must be accessible, while still maintain all federal
regulations to obtain the information. The decision to admit a patient to the hospital can be assigned based on that information
(Schmidt, Geisler, Spreckelsen, 2013). The decision support system using structured information can be determine the cost of
the treatment. This information can vary on some medical cost based on contract costs with the medical provider. The decision
support system can also assist MFT with the operational costs. The system can have modifying capabilities to adjust with the
times. This helps the administrators of the medical facilities make quicker decisions that are more accurate. The system can
also provide feedback that those pulling the data can resolve problems and learn from it (Wu, Lin, Tsai, 2002). A clinical
decision support system is ideal for hospitals and medical facilities.
Clinical decision support systems help with the decision making is the management aspect. If the hospital or facility did not
have an effective DSS the daily operation and strategic management decisions can be impacted. The proper ordering of
medical supplies can become an oversight (Medtechmedia, 2013). Management can create reports and dashboards that provide

Happy Moment In 1988
The year 1988 was filled with many mixed emotions throughout the year. There were moments when people were sad from
losing their loved ones but also many happy emotions because of big achievements that have been reached. Some of the sad
moments that happened was train crashes, airplane crashes, helicopter crashes, many famous people dying, and the terrible

The Abolition Of A Person Through The Court System Essay
As America abolish slavery after the civil war, and thousands of African Americans were free to live lives without the fear of
slavery or undue punishment not all things turned out the way one could have hoped for. Followed revisions of the 13 15th
Amendments to the Constitution, provided the use of exclusion through the criminalization of a person through the court
system. However such rights as described in the 13th amendment provides a claw allowing for racial divisions to persist in the
country. Such loop holes in the Constitution reduced freedoms by convictions through the legal system. As described in the
George Ritzers piece describing McDonaldization of mass plea bargains contributing to the increase removal of a person s
rights and exclusion from aid otherwise qualify for. Such loss of freedoms through court sanctioned violations in America
caused a national reflection of American policies targeting black and brown people up to 70% more than whites. Reflecting on
the destruction of this clause in the 13th Amendment we ll evaluate why it was put in and what this loop hole allowed the
country to maintain. Through the work Michelle Alexanders The New Jim Crow in 2010 continue evaluates the relationship of

Complete Comparisons Of Wheatley And Poe
Complete Comparisons of Wheatley and Poe Throughout American literature, two poets emerge as very unlikely candidates
for poetic comparisons. Phillis Wheatley and Edgar Alan Poe s writings in many ways reflect the unique lives that they lived,
and having an understanding of the two poets backgrounds can assist a reader in dissecting their manuscripts. Comparing
works from the two is an easy task to handle if an avid reader decides to pursue it, and even though they lived under adverse
conditions they have a way of shaping history into an intricate fashion of delicate, dark and sophisticated writing. Phillis
Wheatley and Edgar Alan Poe are different in persona and literacy, but when a reader processes more of their works, one can
understand how these two writers helped shape poetry for generations after and still possess an impact on the literary world.
Phillis Wheatley was a young African American girl, brought to America at the age of seven to be a slave. In her time maturing
in the Wheatley household, young Phillis grew rapidly intellectually and spiritually. Her faith in God and His divine nature is
what inspired Wheatley to write a prominent subject in her poem On Being Brought from Africa to America. Another example
of God being the backbone of her literary career is in her letter To the University of Cambridge in New England. Though
Wheatley was a slave, she is known as one of the most prominent poets in the pre nineteenth century America. Mr. Edgar Alan
Poe,

The Tragic Hero Of Sophocles Antigone
I am here at the moment to claim the title of tragic hero in the play Antigone Author by Sophocles. I would like to start off by
saying that it will be very challenging for me to have the passion that I usually have. But I will still stand in front of you. As I
said before I am here to argue the title of tragic hero in the play Antigone. I could see that some of you are confused by the
word tragic hero . No need to concern for I will tell you. The great Aristotle was one of the earliest men who defined a tragic
hero. His description is not an instruction for what tragedy should be, but it is an explanation of what he thought tragedy was.
According to Aristotle a tragic hero must have these potentials to qualify as one. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In some compliments Creon is seen as respectable but with others as evil. The large fall that Creon took was the fall from the
good grace of being a loved king. According to the book on pages 256 and 257, Your people are beginning to question your
decision and are starting to agree with Antigone. This is the original stage of Creon s dawdling fall from power. His people
may see him as a fine leader, but the people who are under his authority see him as an unfit leader to lead them. He is starting
to be interrogated by his own people which warn of unrest and calamity within his own family. The idea of him bringing up the
rear control of his own ruling, sets the stage for the great fall that this tragic hero is supposed to come upon.
A tragic hero is hypothetical to either have a character mistake or an error of judgment. In the play, Creon has two mistakes.
He has the character flaw of willful pride and his inflexible behavior and he has the flaw of making and error of judgment
when he passes the announcement. He understands his character flaw when he states, According to the book on pages 93 and
94, Oh it is tough to give in! But it is not as good as to risk everything for stubborn pride. This is the view in the story where
Creon understands his mistake and starts to change as Teiresias has told him to. This is significant because he mentions the
struggle he has going against his stubborn pride. The error of judgment is when he permits the

Yet again, there is no singular answer, but it may be rooted in traditional perspectives of women s health. Until very recently,
women s bodies had been perceived as analogous to those of men, aside from reproduction, and therefore they did not merit
study. It was not until 1993 that women were even included in medical trials. The uniqueness of individuals was completely
overlooked, despite the impact of individual experiences have on every aspect of health (Goldstein, 2002). Meanwhile, women
s reproductive health has been viewed in western medicine as difficult and described as natural abnormal. (Wiley, 2009). It is
clear that this stems from male domination in the biomedical field over the years it is a sort of ethnocentrism of the sexes.
Women s health has been medicalized for years, from hysteria to premenstrual syndrome. Because these syndromes do not
appear worldwide, it appears that they are cultural constructs developed to explain women s bodies in a way that medical
science can easily understand. Even the mundane of women s health is treated medically: menstruation is regularly described
in negative terms, focusing upon the associated problems; the experience of pregnancy has become increasingly medicalized,
with extensive testing, hospitalization, and surgery; and menopause is treated as a disease of aging, with hot flashes being
described as an estrogen

article gives insight on why people cannot predict the future. Even if humans try really hard they cant. We try to generalize
things but there is no proof that there is a possibility that other ideas are out there. The example that Im thinking of is the black

FEMA was not prepared or not organized for what was to come from Katrina. FEMA couldn t provide shelter and food for
those who needed it. Thousands of people of New Orleans and parts of Mississippi were not helped. This made me realize if an
organization like FEMA wants to be successful in the future they need to have System thinking as one of their key focus. This
will help them when an another natural disaster like Katrina comes. Senge states that System thinking is a discipline for seeing
the structures that underlie complex situations, and for discerning high from low leverage change. That is, by seeing wholes we
learn how to foster health. (Senge 69). If a complex organization uses system thinking in every decision that has to be made
then many problem can be cut down and that means you can limit the uncertain failures that come with a complex
organization. The organization has to make sure that they are prepared and ready for any problem that is thrown at them.
System thinking can help an organization be successful at the end of the day.
The one thing that be very important is strategies which helps cut down the unforeseen failures within complex organizations.
The complex organizations will face failures without planning properly or without having great guidance from a leader. Perfect
examples of how to cut down risk for complex organizations is the way Thad Allen approach the rescue missions of Hurricane

The late 1900s brought about a great deal of change for China in terms of basic education. In 1978, a policy of globalization
took effect, and the Peoples Republic of China began to interact with the world much more than in its previous years.
Subsequently, in 1985, the Decision on the Reform of educational structure was mandated by the Communist Party. This
placed the responsibility of education on local governments. A year later, the Compulsory Education Law of the People s
Republic of China was passed, making basic education a legal requirement of citizens. Throughout the 1990s, more laws were
passed that further refined education, detailing the requirements for quality socialistic educations, and promoting science and
technology as vital elements. The result of this reform was a tremendous increase in kindergartens, primary, junior and senior
secondary schools. Enrollment rates at primary and junior secondary schools were 98.58% and 90% respectively. Employed
full time teachers were nearly 5.8 million in 2002 (4). These details show that a thoroughly educated Chinese culture is still
young, and without a doubt these developments affect the practice of the medical professional.

Although The Hurt Locker details the emotional impacts of war on soldiers and occasionally breaks some male role

Eldridge s guilt and grief over his previous squad mate s death affects him when he is out of the field, and although he is a
capable soldier, he remains unsure while in combat, unlike his two counterparts, who are also in higher leadership positions.
He is neither assertive nor decisive, and lacking these traits is often associated with being feminine (Hyde Else Quest, 2013,

not uphold traditional male stereotypes. Because of his insecurity and subordinate positon, Eldridge is characterized as less
masculine than either James or Sanborn by the viewer of the film. Contrastingly, Sanborn is not afforded much emotion until
the end of the film, during his breakdown in the Humvee, where he weeps, admitting his fears of dying in Iraq before he can

Restorative Justice Case Study
Introduction
Over the course of both my undergraduate and master s programs in Negotiation, Conflict Resolution, and Peacebuilding
(NCRP), I have wanted to further study the concept of Restorative Justice. Though it has surfaced several times throughout my
NCRP coursework, it has mostly been in the context of international conflict. Thus, I have often wondered how Restorative
Justice might work in a more local context. That local context revealed itself in my current role as one of two fathers of a first
grader in a school in Long Beach. Helena, our six year old daughter, attends a small private school with 160 students in grades
K 8. The school community regards itself as being a large, caring, tight knit extended family, while the administration has been
explicit in stating that the incidence of bullying on the campus is little to none. Our experience as a family in the nearly two
years that we have been part of the community has been otherwise. Here are three bullying scenarios that we ve experienced or
heard of occurring in our school community:
In our first year, two male classmates called our daughter fat when she was in Kindergarten.

Extreme Right Movement
Introduction
After several failed attempts to establish a Post War organization for the extreme far right wing citizens of Germany, the first
successful extreme right movement drew from the foundation of the National Democratic Party of Germany, known as the
NPD, in 1964. In the late 1960 s, it was expanded by victories in seven of the ten state parliaments and was widely expected to
make it into the Bundestag. At its highest point, the party could boast a count of some 28,000 members. This may not seem
like a huge portion of the German population, but it does account for almost Ÿ of the organized German right wing extremists.

In fact, the party has long been anti constitutional, in addition to being anti establishment. The German state certainly has legal
means at its disposal to impose a ban upon the party, should it deem that the National Democratic Party has become a threat to
national security. This has even been tried in the past, but the ïŹrst attempt to do so, in 2001 2003, did not succeed. Attempts of
banning the group will focus less on NPD behaviors of xenophobic and anti Semitic rhetoric, and place more focus on their
anti constitutional tendencies. In 2012, an effort to eliminate the NPD was introduced into the courts, but a decision had not
been made at the time. Chancellor Merkel has yet to place a ban, and states that her administration will not be seeking to
disband the party. Merkel went further by stating that she did not consider a renewed ban application necessary, even
considering their militant aggressive attitude towards the existing order. Success of ban would make NPD the third party
blacklisted in view of being unconstitutional in post war Germany. The failure to dislodge the NPD from the political sphere
has discouraged any further efforts since. The primary reason for the failure of the attempted ban was simply strategic: The
German security service had managed to covertly penetrate the NPD, and there were fears that if the party went

A Double Standard for Men and Women in Tom Jones
For this project, I will be summarizing three different articles that pertain to the argument that there is an apparent double
standard for what is acceptable behavior in men versus women in Tom Jones. In addition to summarizing these articles, I will
also be adding my own views and comments throughout this paper. The first article is by April London, entitled Controlling
the Text: Women in Tom Jones. London begins by stating that Fielding uses a metaphor between property and women
throughout the text in Tom Jones. She states that Fielding plays with the multiple meanings of property, undercutting the
equation of female and helplessness, to offer versions of power unconstrained by gender which are. . . contradicted by . . . ...

This double standard is actually stated and justified by another woman, which accurately highlights the way of thinking in the
18th century that Fielding evidently recognized. Later, when Molly is found to be pregnant, Allworthy lectures Tom much in
the same way he lectured Jenny Jones years ago, but according to Carlton, Fielding minimizes its impact in Tom s case (399).
These two instances are a few of many examples of this double standard for men and women. Carlton sums up the view of
women when he states, Fielding relies on . . . the traditional view of women, implicit in the fact that it is always the woman
who is the aggressor in Tom s affairs . . . women are perceived as either purer than they are or more sexually ravenous than
they are (the familiar virgin/whore polarization), but never simply as they are. At one extreme, they are seen as semidivine
beings . . . at the other, women are portrayed as insatiable sinks of lust (399 400). Sophia and Lady Bellaston seem to represent
these two extremes precisely. Sophia is often referred to with heavenly and divine inferences, while Lady Bellaston is the
instigator of an on going affair with Tom. Tom is viewed as an innocent bystander who falls victim to an evil temptress of
sorts. Carlton tells us that another critic, Battestin,

Weaknesses Of The Hague Rules
The Hague rules had many imperfections, which highlights its change to the later amended 1971 Hague Visby rules. One of
the many weaknesses of the Hague rules was that in article X The provisions of this Convention shall apply to all bills of
lading issued in any of the contracting States . According to Hasan ZB and Nazli I (2007). Shipment from ports not in the
contracting states to any port in contracting states. The Hague Rules do not apply but rather the law of the country from where
the goods were shipped would be the valid law. According to Hasan ZB and Nazli I (2007), this creates loopholes where
parties are able to contract out of the Hague rules by selecting any law other than the law where the bill of lading is issued as
the governing law. Earlier common law cases like the case Moorcock (1889) is helpful in this area of contract law, as implied
contract terms if breached can have locus standi in courts and individuals should be aware of them within a contract. This
highlights how the Hague rules do not add much to earlier common law provisions. An additional common law case would be
Liver alkali v Jonson (1874), which gives the carrier complete liability giving far better protection to cargo owners.
An additional fault with The Hague rules is that the Maximum Limit of a carrier s liability was set to low. The limitation of
carrier s liability is stated in Article IV Rule 5. Neither the carrier nor the ship shall in any event be or become liable for any

Not able to know words, tell me, clear up why, Johnny pleaded in his head, frustrated to feel as though his mind was trying to
think while being encased in mud.
Do you want to know what happened? Why you are hurting now? asked Roy, reading the desperation on Johnny s face.
Nodding, John groaned as it set off a round of nauseous and increased the thumping inside his head.
Don t worry, you can t get sick, Roy assured him. The doctors have a tube going in your nose that makes sure that it doesn t
happen. I know it s not fun and itches, but it s better than getting sick.
Sighing, John leaned back on the bed and waited for Roy to begin explaining. Starting with the shortened version of being
caught in a fire that caused him to be thrown a bit, Roy then moved on to let John know the various injuries that were caused
by that. Once he went through that, Roy pointed out each tube and what it was for, hoping that at some level Johnny was
understanding it. Considering how he looked however, Roy figured that most of the

Myrtle Wilson Monologue
It was December of the following year and I finally convinced myself to go back to West Egg. It was killing me to know what
had happened to Gatsby and how he is doing after a whole year has passed. Was he still breathing? Is he still going to follow
his dreams even though the love of his life left him? Did he blame me for his sins and mine? After the night of the incident, I
hadn t spoken to him and maybe this is why I had accepted this journey. My father had also requested me to go to West egg to
start up a hardware store. He said that this new store would be the start of the expansion of our company. I had also not spoken
to Tom nor Daisy since they decided not to take the responsibility of Myrtle Wilson s death, and didn t plan on it either. It all
made sense on why my father never talked about Daisy s side of the family. I could never forgive her for her actions and
choices. I could see in her eyes that she was completely fine with what she had done. It was ... Show more content on

George Wilson had committed suicide by shooting himself with a gun. He was found dead lying in the middle of Gatsby s
lawn. His blood had covered up that grass that had once been green. Michaelis, the police had closely investigated the case and
had found out that Wilson killed himself as soon as he received the news about his wife s death. Wilson went over to Tom s
house and saw that nobody was home so he arrived at Gatsby s house and shot himself in the head. Michaelis has no clue why
Wilson went to Tom s house in the first place, but I had a feeling I knew exactly why. As a matter of fact, Gatsby and I were
the only people who knew why Wilson went to the Buchannan s place. Daisy, the murderer of his wife and Tom, the guy who
has an affair with his wife. Two cold blooded and ruthless people living in East Egg. They are seen to be as normal civilians,
but their heads and minds are much more advanced than a normal human

Humans Causing Decline in Biodiversity Essays
As far as we can say, intelligent, modern humans have been around for roughly 50,000 years, and in that time have altered the
earth beyond recognition (Morrison, 2006). Most evident in recent years, the rapidity of technological advances both during
and post the industrial revolution has been astonishing, but has come with a hefty ecological price. There is wide scientific
consensus that we are presently witnessing the obsolescence of species on a prodigious scale. We are now having to accept the
possibility that humans might just be a contributing influence.
Predominantly we rely on one measure to compare the rate of species loss between various moments in history. The
background rate of extinction is approximately 1 extinction per ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Mascarene island of Mauritius national emblem remains to this day the dodo, despite the fact that it is one of the most
infamous cases of manmade extinction. Previously isolated from humans, the largest member of the pigeon family possessed a
curious and innocently trusting nature when sailors first arrived on the island in the early 1600 s. Despite its flesh being
absurdly tasteless, the dodo s gullibility and lack of leggy zip (Bryson, 2003) proved an irresistible target for young seamen
and their pets. So blissfully ignorant was the raphus cucullatus that you had only to set one squawking and all its friends from
the immediate surroundings would rush to your side. Within seventy years of our first meeting with the dodos the last one was
dead, pointlessly hunted to extinction by humans and the animals we introduced (Flannery Schouten, 2001).
Myriad methods exist through which we are directly and indirectly placing pressure on flora and fauna. A growing global
population puts more strain on the agriculture industry, triggering agrarian and urban expansion. Land clearing reduces habitat
size, while large environmental enterprises such as the damming of rivers can either flood or dehydrate vast areas of terrain.
Although not so common nowadays, introduced species have in the past entirely missed their intended purpose, eventually
poisoning, killing or in the very least competing with native animals. Diseases and infections can also

Hemingway s Use of Economy In The End of Something Essay
Hemingway s Use of Economy In The End of Something
Hemingway is renowned for his brief, simple and economical writing style. This is present in the story The end of something ,
but how does he achieve this and what effect does it have on the story.
Hemingway has an economical writing style, which is achieved through the repetition of words. An example of this is the use
of the word said after any dialogue between Marjorie and Nick. This can seem quite juvenile in style, many authors would be
more descriptive, but by repeating this simple and plain word Hemingway is commenting on the tediousness of their
relationship. This is reinforced later when Nick remarks it isn t fun anymore . When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

There are several lines and words in the story that have double meanings and it is for us the reader to interpret them. An
example of this is the word Lying in the following sentence Yes Nick said lying, his face on the blanket . Lying could mean
one of two things, lying face down or not telling the truth. If we take the former meaning he could be lying because he doesn t
want to look at Bill because he feels guilty, if we take the latter then it suggests that Nick is embarrassed about his actions and
doesn t want to admit that he hurt Marjorie. The use of double entrées make the audience think more about there own
perception and is also economical because it is using one word to convey two meanings. There is also a vagueness in the story
where we the audience are meant to fill in the gaps. For example the relationship between Bill and Nick is not explained, are
they just friends or is there an illusion to a homoerotic relationship? Making the audience an active reader is the one of the
main functions of an economical style.
The metaphors in the story require an active reader to perceive them. An example of an extended metaphor in the story is
fishing. In this metaphor, Nick is a fish, for whom biting would be deciding to marry. Marjorie is hopeful that the fish are

Serena s Paper Doll
Arriving at the private clinic just North of Holby, Serena sat nervously in the passenger s seat. She luckily had the rest of the
day off as she was only working the morning clinic; Ric on the other hand had escaped work for an hour to accompany his
girlfriend. Ric had not disclosed why he had to take some time away, just that it lay personal. Despite saying that they would
talk things over the following morning, they failed to follow through. Serena put up her defences; she decided there was
nothing to talk about until they had the facts. This had left them with nothing but a four day wait to see Obs Gynae Consultant
Michael Reid. Yet, it started to become more apparent that Serena found herself with child. Heartburn had become an issue,
and Serena developed a taste for Donner Kebab something she only ever recalled eating as a University Student, after a night
out. She found the concept of eating such vile processed food antagonising, the craving kicked in from nowhere. Tiredness
kicked in, hitting her like a wave, she woke up that morning feeling utterly exhausted. Serena had hoped that this was all in her
head; her body was just acting pregnant when it was not, and she could not contemplate risking everything in her life for
pregnancy. Nevertheless, no time like the present, and Serena did Ric, walked arm in arm into the clinic. Everything seemed so
chic and modern, more like a modern living room to a penthouse apartment that saw life once or twice a week. Before

Just three years ago, Blackberry had a market share of 70% among business customers in North America. This year that has dropped to 5%. Globally, its business market share has slipped to around 8% from 31% in 2010, according to IDC . (Knutson, Boulton, Connors, 2013). For the assignment of participate observation experience, I chose to visit Life Strategies Couneling Services in Beckley, West Virginia, to gain a better understaning of how the community resource of indvidual therapy and group therapy is experienced from the client s point of view. I chose to complete my observation of a community resource at Life Strategies Counseling Services due to its many quality online reviews. In addition, when calling the offices of local community resources, the office staff at this location was very friendly and open about the possibility of an interview with a provider with the credentials of MSW. This opportunity has helped me learn criteria related to displaying empathy to a client through expressing lack of awareness regarding the client s cultural experience (Chung, 2002, p. 157), through the process related to public transportation in my community. This service allows idviduals to schedule an appointment to be picked up and transported to your destination for a fee of $2.50 for a one way trip. The other option for this provider is waiting at a series of limited designated physical pick up locations. • 5. Architectures for Scalable Quantum Computation Essay 1. Introduction A classical computer represents an implementation of a (sub ) Turing machine that is limited by the laws of classical physics. As such, certain computational problems are either extremely difficult to solve or are intractable (w.r.t. resources). In order to tackle these problems, a super Turing computational model has been devised and named as the quantum computer [1]. Quantum computation is based on the laws of quantum mechanics and can outperform classical computation in terms of complexity. The power comes from quantum parallelism that is achieved through quantum superposition [2] and entanglement [3]. Computability is unchanged so intractable problems are still unsolvable, but the exponential increase in speed means ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This requires use of large amounts of auxiliary qubits (aka. ancillae). Further fault tolerance is achieved by applying the error correction codes recursively (in levels) [9], exponentially increasing overhead and reducing fault probability. Due to these error correction schemes, a single logical qubit is represented by multiple physical qubits. As an example, a single logical qubit at two levels of recursion is represented by 49 [10] or 81 [11] physical qubits, depending on the error correction code used. Intuitively, the number of physical qubits required for interesting integer factorisation described in [4] would be in the thousands. This is a problem because most investments into manufacturing technology went into silicon based devices and technology such as ion traps [12,13] are not as well developed. Hence, initial proposals for quantum architectures such as the Quantum Logic Array (QLA) [14] are space inefficient and somewhat impractical. This review attempts to give an outline of the current state of quantum computing architectures based on the QLA and provide critical comments. 2. Review The quantum logic array (QLA) [14], designed by Metodi et al., is one the first complete architectural designs of a trapped ion quantum computer based on the quantum charge coupled device architecture in [13]. • 6. The Mozart Effect and Infant Intelligence In modern society intelligence is highly competitive and subject to scrutiny; therefore, it is understandable that a child s intelligence is a primary concern for many parents. The Mozart effect, popularised in the 1990s, resulted in many parents believing that simply exposing their child to music composed by Mozart would improve their intelligence (Campbell, 1997). The claim was founded by research published in the journal Nature, which suggested that spatial reasoning could be temporarily enhanced by listening to one of Mozart s compositions for ten minutes (Rauscher, Shaw Ky, 1993). It will be argued that there is not sufficient evidence to support the claim that playing Mozart to babies will increase their intelligence. Firstly, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A study intending to emulate the results expressed in the original study was performed on preschool aged children exposing them to similar variables as those in the original study (Hui, 2007). The study showed no empirical evidence that listening to Mozart is more beneficial for children than ulterior conditions (Hui, 2007). This disproves the belief that listening to Mozart makes a child smarter also making the generalization from the Rauscher et al (1993) inconclusive. There are also a number of other factors that have been overlooked when comparing the finding of the original study to the Mozart effect in children. Another discerning factor expressed in the original study was the test used to assess intelligence between the participants. The portion of the Stanford Binet test used in the original study focuses on one aspect of intelligence, namely, spatial reasoning (Rauscher et al, 1993). Therefore, it would be invalid to assume that high scores on this specific test delineate an increase in overall general intelligence. The test itself is also bias as specific cultures outperform others, as cultural environment has an influence on intelligence, which may lead to deficits in the results found (Weinberg, 1989). Sternberg (2004) found that IQ tests are effective at predicting academic success in western individuals but are not conclusive measures of overall intelligence or ability to succeed. Gardner (1999) also proposed that IQ test also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Flaws In Volleyball Research Paper The girls who played volleyball in the clip, are decent players, however there are some significant flaws in their gameplay. The first aspect that needs work is their teamwork. Their teamwork and lack of communication is poor, as the girls bumped into each other, and never set the ball for their team mate to spike. To improve this, name calling should be suggested if you are going to go for the ball, as this would minimise players running into each other. Another way to improve teamwork is if strategy was involved. There is no strategy placed in the game, as shown in the clip. The plays of the ball had only one concept: To get the ball to the other side. There were no sets, leading to no spikes. If the girls planned who would set to who, and ... The capital was suffering from food shortages, and that combined with long working hours for the munition workers caused work strikes to occur. This is seen as the real reason behind the fall of Germany, a lack of food and thus lack of mutations. • 10. The Existence Of Inter Class Friendship The Existence of Inter Class Friendship in E.M. Forster s A Passage to India Introduction Interaction is the source of culture; no man is in a vacuum, each person inevitably interacts with the other people. The interactions between people foregrounds the rise of human institution and culture in the nation. This is also the case for different countries and nations. Interaction between different nations has several reasons; it may be cultural, political and economic. Literature may stands for cultural interaction. International convention may be a political one and trade is the economic. However, of the three, literature has been more interesting since one can witness politics, culture and economy in a literary work. Literary works written from the beginning up to the present are shaped by the nature of interaction. Ancient writers, in their works, deal with the idea of war and bravery. In the Odyssey, the earliest written literary work, the second chapter is about Egypt and Phoenicia. He depicts the Phoenicians as cruel, merciless and barbaric tribes. During the Middle Ages East has a very similar image to that of Homer, but this time religion shapes the nature of interaction. In Chaucer, for instance, infidels inhabit east; he calls for a crusade (Canterbury Tales). After the 15th century East becomes the source of wealth, therefore, writers deal with East more seriously. • 24. Complete Comparisons Of Wheatley And Poe Complete Comparisons of Wheatley and Poe Throughout American literature, two poets emerge as very unlikely candidates for poetic comparisons. Phillis Wheatley and Edgar Alan Poe s writings in many ways reflect the unique lives that they lived, and having an understanding of the two poets backgrounds can assist a reader in dissecting their manuscripts. Comparing works from the two is an easy task to handle if an avid reader decides to pursue it, and even though they lived under adverse conditions they have a way of shaping history into an intricate fashion of delicate, dark and sophisticated writing. Phillis Wheatley and Edgar Alan Poe are different in persona and literacy, but when a reader processes more of their works, one can understand how these two writers helped shape poetry for generations after and still possess an impact on the literary world. Phillis Wheatley was a young African American girl, brought to America at the age of seven to be a slave. In her time maturing in the Wheatley household, young Phillis grew rapidly intellectually and spiritually. Her faith in God and His divine nature is what inspired Wheatley to write a prominent subject in her poem On Being Brought from Africa to America. Another example of God being the backbone of her literary career is in her letter To the University of Cambridge in New England. Though Wheatley was a slave, she is known as one of the most prominent poets in the pre nineteenth century America. Mr. Edgar Alan Poe, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is the original stage of Creon s dawdling fall from power. His people may see him as a fine leader, but the people who are under his authority see him as an unfit leader to lead them. He is starting to be interrogated by his own people which warn of unrest and calamity within his own family. The idea of him bringing up the rear control of his own ruling, sets the stage for the great fall that this tragic hero is supposed to come upon. Until very recently, women s bodies had been perceived as analogous to those of men, aside from reproduction, and therefore they did not merit study. It was not until 1993 that women were even included in medical trials. The uniqueness of individuals was completely overlooked, despite the impact of individual experiences have on every aspect of health (Goldstein, 2002). It is clear that this stems from male domination in the biomedical field over the years it is a sort of ethnocentrism of the sexes. Women s health has been medicalized for years, from hysteria to premenstrual syndrome. Because these syndromes do not appear worldwide, it appears that they are cultural constructs developed to explain women s bodies in a way that medical science can easily understand. In addition to summarizing these articles, I will also be adding my own views and comments throughout this paper. The first article is by April London, entitled Controlling the Text: Women in Tom Jones. London begins by stating that Fielding uses a metaphor between property and women throughout the text in Tom Jones. She states that Fielding plays with the multiple meanings of property, undercutting the equation of female and helplessness, to offer versions of power unconstrained by gender which are. . . contradicted by . . . ... This double standard is actually stated and justified by another woman, which accurately highlights the way of thinking in the 18th century that Fielding evidently recognized. Later, when Molly is found to be pregnant, Allworthy lectures Tom much in the same way he lectured Jenny Jones years ago, but according to Carlton, Fielding minimizes its impact in Tom s case (399). These two instances are a few of many examples of this double standard for men and women. Carlton sums up the view of women when he states, Fielding relies on . . . the traditional view of women, implicit in the fact that it is always the woman who is the aggressor in Tom s affairs . . . women are perceived as either purer than they are or more sexually ravenous than they are (the familiar virgin/whore polarization), but never simply as they are. At one extreme, they are seen as semidivine beings . . . at the other, women are portrayed as insatiable sinks of lust (399 400). Sophia and Lady Bellaston seem to represent these two extremes precisely. Sophia is often referred to with heavenly and divine inferences, while Lady Bellaston is the instigator of an on going affair with Tom. One of the many weaknesses of the Hague rules was that in article X The provisions of this Convention shall apply to all bills of lading issued in any of the contracting States . According to Hasan ZB and Nazli I (2007). Shipment from ports not in the contracting states to any port in contracting states. The Hague Rules do not apply but rather the law of the country from where the goods were shipped would be the valid law. According to Hasan ZB and Nazli I (2007), this creates loopholes where parties are able to contract out of the Hague rules by selecting any law other than the law where the bill of lading is issued as the governing law. Earlier common law cases like the case Moorcock (1889) is helpful in this area of contract law, as implied contract terms if breached can have locus standi in courts and individuals should be aware of them within a contract. This highlights how the Hague rules do not add much to earlier common law provisions. An additional common law case would be Liver alkali v Jonson (1874), which gives the carrier complete liability giving far better protection to cargo owners. An additional fault with The Hague rules is that the Maximum Limit of a carrier s liability was set to low. The limitation of carrier s liability is stated in Article IV Rule 5. Don t worry, you can t get sick, Roy assured him. The doctors have a tube going in your nose that makes sure that it doesn t happen. I know it s not fun and itches, but it s better than getting sick. Sighing, John leaned back on the bed and waited for Roy to begin explaining. Starting with the shortened version of being caught in a fire that caused him to be thrown a bit, Roy then moved on to let John know the various injuries that were caused by that. Once he went through that, Roy pointed out each tube and what it was for, hoping that at some level Johnny was understanding it. Considering how he looked however, Roy figured that most of the ... • 41. Myrtle Wilson Monologue It was December of the following year and I finally convinced myself to go back to West Egg. It was killing me to know what had happened to Gatsby and how he is doing after a whole year has passed. Was he still breathing? Is he still going to follow his dreams even though the love of his life left him? Did he blame me for his sins and mine? After the night of the incident, I hadn t spoken to him and maybe this is why I had accepted this journey. My father had also requested me to go to West egg to start up a hardware store. He said that this new store would be the start of the expansion of our company. I had also not spoken to Tom nor Daisy since they decided not to take the responsibility of Myrtle Wilson s death, and didn t plan on it either. It all made sense on why my father never talked about Daisy s side of the family. I could never forgive her for her actions and choices. I could see in her eyes that she was completely fine with what she had done. It was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... George Wilson had committed suicide by shooting himself with a gun. He was found dead lying in the middle of Gatsby s lawn. His blood had covered up that grass that had once been green. Michaelis, the police had closely investigated the case and had found out that Wilson killed himself as soon as he received the news about his wife s death. Wilson went over to Tom s house and saw that nobody was home so he arrived at Gatsby s house and shot himself in the head. Michaelis has no clue why Wilson went to Tom s house in the first place, but I had a feeling I knew exactly why. As a matter of fact, Gatsby and I were the only people who knew why Wilson went to the Buchannan s place. Daisy, the murderer of his wife and Tom, the guy who has an affair with his wife. Two cold blooded and ruthless people living in East Egg. They are seen to be as normal civilians, but their heads and minds are much more advanced than a normal human ... • 42. Humans Causing Decline in Biodiversity Essays As far as we can say, intelligent, modern humans have been around for roughly 50,000 years, and in that time have altered the earth beyond recognition (Morrison, 2006). Most evident in recent years, the rapidity of technological advances both during and post the industrial revolution has been astonishing, but has come with a hefty ecological price. There is wide scientific consensus that we are presently witnessing the obsolescence of species on a prodigious scale. We are now having to accept the possibility that humans might just be a contributing influence. Predominantly we rely on one measure to compare the rate of species loss between various moments in history. The background rate of extinction is approximately 1 extinction per ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Mascarene island of Mauritius national emblem remains to this day the dodo, despite the fact that it is one of the most infamous cases of manmade extinction. Previously isolated from humans, the largest member of the pigeon family possessed a curious and innocently trusting nature when sailors first arrived on the island in the early 1600 s. Despite its flesh being absurdly tasteless, the dodo s gullibility and lack of leggy zip (Bryson, 2003) proved an irresistible target for young seamen and their pets. So blissfully ignorant was the raphus cucullatus that you had only to set one squawking and all its friends from the immediate surroundings would rush to your side. Within seventy years of our first meeting with the dodos the last one was dead, pointlessly hunted to extinction by humans and the animals we introduced (Flannery Schouten, 2001). Myriad methods exist through which we are directly and indirectly placing pressure on flora and fauna. A growing global population puts more strain on the agriculture industry, triggering agrarian and urban expansion. Land clearing reduces habitat size, while large environmental enterprises such as the damming of rivers can either flood or dehydrate vast areas of terrain. Although not so common nowadays, introduced species have in the past entirely missed their intended purpose, eventually poisoning, killing or in the very least competing with native animals. Diseases and infections can also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Hemingway s Use of Economy In The End of Something Essay Hemingway s Use of Economy In The End of Something Hemingway is renowned for his brief, simple and economical writing style. This is present in the story The end of something , but how does he achieve this and what effect does it have on the story. Hemingway has an economical writing style, which is achieved through the repetition of words. An example of this is the use of the word said after any dialogue between Marjorie and Nick. This can seem quite juvenile in style, many authors would be more descriptive, but by repeating this simple and plain word Hemingway is commenting on the tediousness of their relationship. This is reinforced later when Nick remarks it isn t fun anymore . When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are several lines and words in the story that have double meanings and it is for us the reader to interpret them. An example of this is the word Lying in the following sentence Yes Nick said lying, his face on the blanket . Lying could mean one of two things, lying face down or not telling the truth. If we take the former meaning he could be lying because he doesn t want to look at Bill because he feels guilty, if we take the latter then it suggests that Nick is embarrassed about his actions and doesn t want to admit that he hurt Marjorie. The use of double entrĂ©es make the audience think more about there own perception and is also economical because it is using one word to convey two meanings. There is also a vagueness in the story where we the audience are meant to fill in the gaps. For example the relationship between Bill and Nick is not explained, are they just friends or is there an illusion to a homoerotic relationship? Making the audience an active reader is the one of the main functions of an economical style. The metaphors in the story require an active reader to perceive them. An example of an extended metaphor in the story is fishing. In this metaphor, Nick is a fish, for whom biting would be deciding to marry. Marjorie is hopeful that the fish are ... • 44. Serena s Paper Doll Arriving at the private clinic just North of Holby, Serena sat nervously in the passenger s seat. She luckily had the rest of the day off as she was only working the morning clinic; Ric on the other hand had escaped work for an hour to accompany his girlfriend. Ric had not disclosed why he had to take some time away, just that it lay personal. Despite saying that they would talk things over the following morning, they failed to follow through. Serena put up her defences; she decided there was nothing to talk about until they had the facts. This had left them with nothing but a four day wait to see Obs Gynae Consultant Michael Reid. Yet, it started to become more apparent that Serena found herself with child. Heartburn had become an issue, and Serena developed a taste for Donner Kebab something she only ever recalled eating as a University Student, after a night out. She found the concept of eating such vile processed food antagonising, the craving kicked in from nowhere. Tiredness kicked in, hitting her like a wave, she woke up that morning feeling utterly exhausted. Serena had hoped that this was all in her head; her body was just acting pregnant when it was not, and she could not contemplate risking everything in her life for pregnancy. Nevertheless, no time like the present, and Serena did Ric, walked arm in arm into the clinic. Everything seemed so chic and modern, more like a modern living room to a penthouse apartment that saw life once or twice a week. Before ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
