James Thurmond
Strom Thurmond was a U.S. senator known for his pro segregation policies and long running tenure in congress. It was later
revealed that he had a biracial daughter. On December 5th1902 Thurmond was born in Edgefield South Carolina after fighting
in WW II, he was elected governor of South Carolina. He was appointed to the senate in 1954 as a Democrat and later
switched to the Republican Party and was very much known for his stance against integration. Serving in congress until the
age of 100, Thurmond died in 2003. There are many questions from:

This also happened to be the year he celebrated his 100th birthday. This birthday made him become the oldest person to have
ever served in congress and served as a senate member longer than anyone else in the U.S. history until Robert C. Boyd broke
the record in 2006. This wasn t the only surprising thing Thurmond had up his sleeve. When Strom Thurmond died on June 26,
2003, in the same town he was born, A few months after it come up that at the age of 22 helped to conceive a daughter. The
mother Carrie Butler, who was a 16 at the time and also an African American domestic worker had a job with his family. He
hadnt met his daughter until her teen years, she then began to receive financial support from Thurmond and was also allowed
to visit during his office hours throughout her

Women s Small Freedom Analysis
I think that the comportment books maybe more of a men reflections to restrict women s small freedom. Through this books
women were domestically educated to maintain the traditions of women in society. So, they could gain knowledge on how to
modestly behave in a lot of societal aspects such as social class, marriage and in terms of education. The purpose of males

A Double Standard for Men and Women in Tom Jones
For this project, I will be summarizing three different articles that pertain to the argument that there is an apparent double
standard for what is acceptable behavior in men versus women in Tom Jones. In addition to summarizing these articles, I will
also be adding my own views and comments throughout this paper. The first article is by April London, entitled Controlling
the Text: Women in Tom Jones. London begins by stating that Fielding uses a metaphor between property and women
throughout the text in Tom Jones. She states that Fielding plays with the multiple meanings of property, undercutting the
equation of female and helplessness, to offer versions of power unconstrained by gender which are. . . contradicted by . . . ...
This double standard is actually stated and justified by another woman, which accurately highlights the way of thinking in the
18th century that Fielding evidently recognized. Later, when Molly is found to be pregnant, Allworthy lectures Tom much in
the same way he lectured Jenny Jones years ago, but according to Carlton, Fielding minimizes its impact in Tom s case (399).
These two instances are a few of many examples of this double standard for men and women. Carlton sums up the view of
women when he states, Fielding relies on . . . the traditional view of women, implicit in the fact that it is always the woman
who is the aggressor in Tom s affairs . . . women are perceived as either purer than they are or more sexually ravenous than
they are (the familiar virgin/whore polarization), but never simply as they are. At one extreme, they are seen as semidivine
beings . . . at the other, women are portrayed as insatiable sinks of lust (399 400). Sophia and Lady Bellaston seem to represent
these two extremes precisely. Sophia is often referred to with heavenly and divine inferences, while Lady Bellaston is the
instigator of an on going affair with Tom. Tom is viewed as an innocent bystander who falls victim to an evil temptress of

Weaknesses Of The Hague Rules
The Hague rules had many imperfections, which highlights its change to the later amended 1971 Hague Visby rules. One of
the many weaknesses of the Hague rules was that in article X The provisions of this Convention shall apply to all bills of

Stopping at the frightened and confused look John was giving him, Roy trailed off, I m sorry.

There are several lines and words in the story that have double meanings and it is for us the reader to interpret them. An
example of this is the word Lying in the following sentence Yes Nick said lying, his face on the blanket . Lying could mean
one of two things, lying face down or not telling the truth. If we take the former meaning he could be lying because he doesn t
want to look at Bill because he feels guilty, if we take the latter then it suggests that Nick is embarrassed about his actions and
doesn t want to admit that he hurt Marjorie. The use of double entrées make the audience think more about there own
perception and is also economical because it is using one word to convey two meanings. There is also a vagueness in the story
where we the audience are meant to fill in the gaps. For example the relationship between Bill and Nick is not explained, are
they just friends or is there an illusion to a homoerotic relationship? Making the audience an active reader is the one of the
main functions of an economical style.
The metaphors in the story require an active reader to perceive them. An example of an extended metaphor in the story is

Arriving at the private clinic just North of Holby, Serena sat nervously in the passenger s seat. She luckily had the rest of the
day off as she was only working the morning clinic; Ric on the other hand had escaped work for an hour to accompany his
