Is slow food a marketing tool that could make change in the social economy? Could slow food build a market for local food from the middle and upper class work that extends to transforming school lunches?
In contrast to the highly mechanistic food production, distribution, and consumption model applied in the industrialized food system, Indigenous food systems are described in ecological rather than neoclassical economic terms.
An Indigenous food is one that has been primarily cultivated, taken care of, harvested, prepared, preserved, shared, or traded within the boundaries of the respective territories based on values of interdependency, respect, reciprocity, and ecological sensibility.
"Food sovereignty", is a term coined by members of La Via Campesina (International coalition of Peasant organizations representing 148 organizations from 69 countries) in 1996.
Asserts that the people who produce, distribute, and consume food should control the mechanisms and policies of food production and distribution, rather than the corporations and market institutions that have come to dominate the global food system.

This is the slide deck presented at our 4th event of a pressing Series on 'Circular Economy & Waste Management' in Asia.
Globally, about 1/3 of the total amount of food produced in the world never reaches our plates - that's equivalent to $1 trillion dollars! Meanwhile, just a quarter of this is enough to feed 780 million hungry people.
Worst still, if food waste were a country, it would be the world’s third largest emitter of greenhouse gases, with an economic cost of up to US$680 billion.
This session aims to shed light on the current food waste situation, especially in Asia and throughout the food value chain, to look at innovative business solutions, to both reduce food waste & to ensure that unavoidable food waste goes to something useful - i.e. compost to grow our next harvest of nutritious food.
We look forward to stimulating discussions on how to reduce food waste and to turn it into an opportunity for business!
Food Co-ops: Making Healthy, Local Food More Accessible, NOFA SC, 8.11.13NFCACoops
Bonnie Hudspeth, Outreach Coordinator for the Neighboring Food Co-op Association & Micha Josephy, Program Manager for the Cooperative Fund of New England, share how twenty-nine New England food co-ops are collaborating to make wholesome, nutritious food more accessible to all community members. This presentation explores the capacity of food co-ops to increase access to healthy food for individuals/families with limited food budgets, and strategies to increase collaboration among food co-ops for a larger collective impact.
The Eastern Ontario Local Food Conference (EOLFC 2013) provided a great opportunity to share information, learn about success stories and gather information on innovative local food businesses, projects and best practices. The conference was organized by KEDCO (Kingston Economic Development Corporation) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the Ministry of Rural Affairs. The theme of the conference was Innovation Driving Local Food and it was held December 3, 2013 at the Ambassador Hotel in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Keeping a close eye on how our society becomes more conscientious about food waste and taking a look at the various solutions startups work out to hack the flawed system gives us an early glimpse into how positive shifts happen in the world. Food waste is a fascinating topic, and only partly because the current numbers and existing processes are outrageous.
Until 2009, there was not much deep information to be found about the exact scale and nature of the food loss and waste in the world. Published that same year, Tristam Stuart’s book, Waste: Uncovering the Global Food Scandal provides a sobering trip to the reality of food. It also highlights an incredibly important fact: with small, common sense tweaks in habits and processes, the current grave situation can be turned on its head and solve the problem of the 842 million people living in hunger around the world too.

the creation of a food plan in response to the federal
government’s National Food Plan Green Paper.
• The Peoples’ Food Plan is in contrast to the governments, it is
an authentically open, inclusive and democratic document
reflecting the aspirations of eaters, farmers, community
organisations, small to medium size food businesses and
nutritional, health and other advocacy organisations.
• And while the National Food Plan is again dead in the water
due to political whim, the Peoples Food Plan is becoming a
wiki for long term community development, guidance and
relevance.

by national organisations with combined membership
and support bases in excess of 500,000.

• Business as usual is not going to be an option.
– Existing broad scale mechanised monocrops have never
been sustainable, just opportunistic and exploiting.
– Sustainable low-impact farms are key to permanently and
securely feeding us all.
• The governments national Food Plan was more of the same
exploitation thinking, ‘siezing new market opportunities”,
“raising productivity and competitiveness”, and “Boosting
exports”.
• Under that model corporate profits will increase while human
wellbeing, ecosystem integrity and access to local, safe and
nutritious food are badly compromised.
