This document discusses the concept of caring for the land you are born on or have lived on for an extended period of time. It references an Aboriginal belief that people are born from and incarnations of the landscape. The document is a reflection on the author's identity and connection to Perth, Western Australia, where she was born. It discusses her educational background in sustainability and her purpose in undertaking further study to identify leverage points to make positive changes towards sustainability in Perth.

A collective aspiration can change the course of eventsGnostic Centre
A Collective Aspiration can change the course of Events… the call went forth from The Gnostic Centre just around the time of Mubarak’s ouster in Egypt. The synchronicity was perfect. People began responding; some, even without knowing anything about the Centre. Over the next two months a programme evolved that remained ‘evolving’ till the end – just like life – and participants, discussants, panelists too emerged gradually – culminating in a = two-and-a-half day Seminar that went beyond confined spaces, intellectual discussions, paper presentations, and defined activities. A total of 24 participants stayed onsite, and an equal number came from in and around Delhi, besides the in-house team, adding to the vibrancy, depth and continuity of reflections, sharing and interactions. (26-28 March 2011)
Balancing continued economic progress and conservation of our biosphere is the challenge of our time. It’s a dilemma of the anthropocene epoch. Without corporation to the mix, our endeavor is fruitless. Increasingly, corporations have adopted prescriptive, piecemeal and mechanistic environmental management techniques as a response to sustainability discourse. However, in light of the complexity, uncertainty, ambiguity and dynamic nature inherent in the sustainability challenge, at some bifurcation point in the organizational change process, these prescriptive and piecemeal solutions may not adequately account for the emerging multiple levels of environmental, social and financial conflict. A paradigm shift is thus essential: a behavioral change is thus called for. This presentation provides an explanation to the issue and a formulation to tackle challenge head-on: a behavioral competence that builds viable, equitable and responsible corporation resolving issues of sustainable business and sustainable world.

Imagine a future in which land and place increasingly serve as co-researchers or principal investigators in environmental and sustainability education research. Land-based pedagogy, critical place inquiry, indigenous knowledge systems and indigenous ways of knowing, feminist materialisms, bioculturally responsive curriculum development, nature as teacher, terrapsychology, living systems ethical research considerations, and Gaian methods all converge. These slides and briefing paper help explore questions of consent, data-gathering, authorship, and ethics through experiential, collaborative dialogue with examples, paradigms, and methods. Participants walk away with knowledge of effective practice and a resource bibliography to continue to innovate away from anthropocentric assumptions in environmental and sustainability education and towards more inclusive paradigms, methodologies, lenses, and frames for higher quality research.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

1. “If you’re born in Nyoongar Country, this land
knows you. If you’ve lived here more than 6
years the country knows you. If you intend to
stay here, it’s your responsibility to care.”
Noel Nannup
This idea is mentioned in Jackson’s (1995) story of the Australian Aboriginals he travelled with: “It
was easy to understand the Aboriginal belief that children were born of a place as well as of
human parents, that each person is an incarnation of a landscape” (Jackson 1995, 17).
2.
3. I am the blue sky and the sunshine. I am the
white sand and khaki bushland. I am the gum
trees and the kookaburras. I am the paperbark
trees and the wetlands. I am the traffic and the
empty busses, the bike paths and the
buildings. I am the smiles and the irreverent
sense of humour. I am barefeet walking and
the blue blue Indian Ocean.
I am Perth. It is my responsibility to care.

individuals as the core driver to reaching a
sustainable society
• Masters in Human Ecology: Culture, Power
and Sustainability
– Being Human in the System: A journey into
sustainability and local government in Perth,
Western Australia
5. “I am a Perth girl, a ‘sustainablist’, with deep
ecology leanings, who sees that big, deep,
profound change is needed in Perth to make
it a more sustainable, resilient, wonderful,
vibrant, happy place. My purpose, and as
such this thesis, is to try and find the
leverage points within the system to be most
effective in making changes towards
sustainability for my home.”
6. Leverage Points: Places to Intervene in a System in increasing
order of effectiveness (Donella Meadows, 1999)
12. Constants, parameters, numbers (such as subsidies, taxes, standards)
11. The sizes of buffers and other stabilizing stocks, relative to their flows.
10. The structure of material stocks and flows (such as transport networks,

9. The lengths of delays, relative to the rate of system change
8. The strength of negative feedback loops, relative to the impacts they are
trying to correct against
7. The gain around driving positive feedback loops
6. The structure of information flows (who does and does not have access to
what kind of information)
5. The rules of the system (such as incentives, punishments, constraints)
4. The power to add, change, evolve, or self-organize system structure
3. The goals of the system
2. The mindset or paradigm out of which the system – its goals, structures,
rules, delays, parameters – arises
1. The power to transcend paradigms
7. Agency, Power, Systems and Change
“...[s]tuff has a quite remarkable capacity for
fading from view, and becoming naturalized,
taken for granted, the background of frame to
our behaviour. Indeed stuff achieves its
mastery of us precisely because we constantly
fail to notice what it does.”
(Miller 2010, 155)
I believe there is much need to recognize the degree to which we are shaped by the invisibilities of our culture,
the stuff, the systems and structures – material and immaterial – that shape us, the extent to which we are an
unconscious product of our culture. Our consumption, our identity, our values, our desires are all to a large
degree a product of the cultural system we find ourselves socialized into (Schor 1998, Veblen 1902, Bourdieu
1979, Urla and Swedlund 2004), and even our biology (Gravlee 2009).
8. Places of Agency and Power to affect
change in our system?
Where are the Leverage Points?
1. The Council Chamber: Run for Council!
2. Growing Human Beings:
o The ‘Inner work of sustainability’: education, learning,
awareness, responsibility
o Relationships: communication, networks, working together
3. ‘Activist art’
9. “The answer lies in the inner work of
sustainability. A reinforcing process is set in
motion when people start to deliberately slow
down their lives to cultivate broader
awareness and reflective practices”
(Senge et al. 2006, 96)

I first read this in Joanna Macy’s work. This one was re-written and presented in the
‘Sustainable Selves Guidebook’ as a part of my first thesis. I have included references
at the back.
15. The Shambala Prophecy
There is a story in ancient Buddhism that speaks of a time that will come in human
society, where the powers that be are at the edge of destroying the world and
everyone in it. During this time, greed has been taken to the extremes, and the
population is on the brink of apathy and hopelessness.
It is during this time that the Shambala Warriors will awaken. The Shambala Warriors
do not have a uniform. They are no particular race, culture, creed. You cannot tell
them from the clothes they wear, nor the way they look. They have no badges,
they don’t carry swords. But they all hear and answer to the same call.
These warriors will infiltrate every part of the system of the powers that be and work
on dismantling it from the inside-out, and the outside in. They will stand outside
the system and fight it. They will infiltrate every level of the system and work in
roles from top to bottom. They sit in silent prayer and bring vision to a new way of
being. They will nourish and nurture their children on whole foods and feed them
stories of a new world of hope and enlightenment.
They are the mother, the brother, the CEO, the receptionist, the hippie, the musician…
they are you and they are me. They are us. Sustainability Warriors. Sustainablists.
