 Character Education
- Learning that includes but it is not limited to the
following: morals, civics, manners, relationships, and
respect for self and others.
 Description/Characteristics
- Characterized by morale based lesson plans, and ethical
activities it will encourage students to become socially
responsible.
 Importance
- It teaches students how to behave, how to deal with
conflict, how to develop relationships (socially and
professionally), and how to respect themselves and peers.
 Role in 21st Century
- Teachers are role models to students, so if teachers are
portraying good manners, morals, relationships and
respect for themselves and others, students are more likely
to replicate similar behaviors.
 Implementing Technology Tools
- Using blogs, video, social networking, and other media
devices will help apply character education in everyday
classrooms. Technology can make character education
seem more relevant through real life examples in the
classroom.
 Students can practice writing about moral dilemmas on a
blog. They can then comment on each others blog
practicing social media conduct.
 Students can create a video where they act out ideal and
not ideal ways to handle conflict resolution
 Students can create a Facebook or Twitter poll to survey
their peers about how they would handle an ethical
dilemma.
 Create a mock formal dinner in class. Students can record the
dinner. Students can practice manners and etiquette. They can
watch the video the following day and critique their own
manners.
 Students can create podcasts about common character
mistakes their peers make and how to correct these mistakes.
They can even publish their podcast so others can listen to it.
 Character Education is an extremely important pillar in 21st
century education. Social interaction among peers and
educators promote a healthy character education lifestyle.
Many students do not pick up character education from their
parents, leaving the classroom as their only location to learn
about morals, civics, manners, relationships, and respect for
self and others.
