Chapter 8: Legal and Ethical use of Technology
Explore
This activity aims for the students to determine wrong acts or doing with the use of
school technologies.
Below are the different situations in the use of school technologies. Place yourself
in each of the situation and internalize on the action you will do to solve the issues.
1, You as a teacher have purchased an educational software for use in your
class. Your colleague who is teaching the same subject borrows the purchased
software and later installs the software in her own computer without your
knowledge. You are aware that what she did was against the law. What will
you do in this situation?
What she did is against the law, but she is still a teacher and my colleague
and it is best to talk to her, tell her that what she did was wrong. And it is
my own computer and that is my educational software she can’t just
download it without my consent and it can be labeled as stealing so I will
tell her that it is better to ask the owner first before you get a file/document
or anything from his/her computer.
2. You instruct your student that whenever in the computer laboratory,
internet access wifi will be allowed for educational purposes only. However,
three off your students access the internet for downloading of internet games
and play while you discuss the lesson. What will you do with this three
students? What will you suggest to the school heads to limit of the access of
downloading internet games?
Dealing quickly with bad behavior is important: students need to know that
what they have done is unacceptable and there will be a consequence for
their actions. I will talk to the student after class and warn them that
computer lab. Is use for educational purpose only and playing while the
teacher is discussing the lesson is prohibited and if I caught them
downloading and playing game in class again there will be a punishment. I
will suggest that school heads should limit to the access of downloading like
monthly changes of password.
3. You (as a student) are aware that one of your classmates is being
cyber-bullied by some of your classmates. The victim is losing her self-
confidence and self-esteem due to the cyber bullying experience. What
will you do to help the victim and to stop cyber bullying?
First I will tell the bully to stop I will tell the bully that their behavior
isn’t funny or coolbut I will still stay calm and collected. If they don’t
stop in bullying my classmate I will report the bullying that happens
in my class. I’m going to take action and tell it to my teachers and
resolve the issue immediately.
4. While the class is busy doing their activity in the computer
laboratory, you were requested by your teacher to ask the computer
laboratorytechnicianto assistintroubleshooting the computer unit. As
you approachedthe technician, yousaw thathe was watching malicious
movie. The technicianthen immediately stoppedthe movie and told you
to just stay quiet. You are aware that it is against the policy of the
school. What will you do in this situation? Will you really just keep
quiet like what the technician has told you?
For me, I will tell it to my teacher since it is against to the policy of
the school. I have the right to tell the truth since I know the truth and
it is in my teacher to decide if he/she will tell it to the head of the
school.

Perfecting Policy Proposal
This activity aims to develop students’ awareness with the do’s and don’ts in using
school technologies.
This activity will be done by group (with 3 members in each group). Imagine that one of you
is an academic official, a teacher, and a student. Being representatives of the different
sectors of education institutions, propose school policies on the effective use of technology
in teaching and learning. Write your proposal below.
The rules outlined in these guidelines, students will be expected to comply with all class and
school rules while using personal devices. The use of technology is not a necessity but a
privilege. When abused, privileges will be taken away.
Guidelines:
Each teacher has the discretion to allow and regulate the use of personal devices in the
classroom and on specific projects.
Approved devices must be in silent mode while on school campus, unless otherwise
allowed by a teacher. Headphones may be used with teacher permission.
Devices may not be used to cheat on assignments, quizzes, or tests or for non-
instructional purposes (such as making personal phone calls and text messaging).
Students may not use devices to record, transmit, or post photographic images or video
of a person or persons on campus during school hours or during school activities,
unless otherwise allowed by a teacher.
Devices may only be used to access computer files on internet sites which are relevant
to the classroom curriculum.
Students and Parents/Guardians acknowledge that:
The school’s network filters will be applied to a device’s connection to the internet
and any attempt to bypass the network filters is prohibited.
Bringing a device on premises that infects the network with a virus, Trojan, or program
designed to damage, alter, destroy, or provide access to unauthorized data or
information.
Processing or accessing information on school property related to “hacking.” Altering
or bypassing network security policies.

  • 1. Chapter 8: Legal and Ethical use of Technology Explore This activity aims for the students to determine wrong acts or doing with the use of school technologies. Below are the different situations in the use of school technologies. Place yourself in each of the situation and internalize on the action you will do to solve the issues. 1, You as a teacher have purchased an educational software for use in your class. Your colleague who is teaching the same subject borrows the purchased software and later installs the software in her own computer without your knowledge. You are aware that what she did was against the law. What will you do in this situation? What she did is against the law, but she is still a teacher and my colleague and it is best to talk to her, tell her that what she did was wrong. And it is my own computer and that is my educational software she can’t just download it without my consent and it can be labeled as stealing so I will tell her that it is better to ask the owner first before you get a file/document or anything from his/her computer. 2. You instruct your student that whenever in the computer laboratory, internet access wifi will be allowed for educational purposes only. However, three off your students access the internet for downloading of internet games and play while you discuss the lesson. What will you do with this three students? What will you suggest to the school heads to limit of the access of downloading internet games? Dealing quickly with bad behavior is important: students need to know that what they have done is unacceptable and there will be a consequence for their actions. I will talk to the student after class and warn them that computer lab. Is use for educational purpose only and playing while the teacher is discussing the lesson is prohibited and if I caught them downloading and playing game in class again there will be a punishment. I will suggest that school heads should limit to the access of downloading like monthly changes of password.
