2. Leadership Characteristics of a Level 5
• Humility
• Honesty
• Not necessarily the biggest personalities
• Not a “servant leader” or “selfless executive” because
those characteristics sound weak
• Leader has an incurable need to produce results
• Workmanlike diligence
• Mirror and Window Analogy
– When things are going well, these leaders look outside of the
window and attribute the success to other outside factors (the
organization, luck, employees, etc).
– When things do not go well, these leaders look in the mirror to
credit responsibility, never bad luck.
3.
4. Culture of the Organization
• Set up successors for success
• “After all what a better testament to your own
personal greatness than that the place falls
apart after you leave” p.26
• You do not need an outsider to come in and
save the day with their leadership (negative
correlation with a sustained transformation
from good to great)
5. Methodology of the Transformation
• Typically the level 5 leader has risen to a
position of leadership from within the
company as opposed to coming from the
outside
6. Can you learn how to be a level 5?
• Some people will never be able to bring themselves to
subjugate their egotistic needs to the greater ambition
of building something larger and more lasting them
themselves. These people cannot become level 5s.
• Some people have the potential, perhaps buried or
ignored. Under the right circumstances – self-
reflection, personal development, a mentor, a great
teacher, loving parents, life experience, a level 5 boss –
and they can begin to develop.
• Work on the other traits and the level 5 traits will be
worked on
7. Impact on an Educational Institution
• We need to ensure that we get level 5 leadership
present on our administration teams as well as
within teacher curriculum teams
• We need to foster the characteristics of level 5
leaders and help them uncover their potential
• Level 5 leadership will help benefit our students
because that type of leader will attribute the
success of the school to the school and its
stakeholders. Additionally, those leaders will look
within themselves for ways to improve if the
school does not find success.
