The document summarizes the stages of labor and delivery, including the dilation stage where the cervix gradually opens from 3 to 10 cm, the expulsion stage where pushing occurs to deliver the baby, and the placental stage where the placenta is delivered. It also defines menopause as the ending of menstrual cycles around age 51 when the ovaries stop functioning. Finally, it provides the medical term for a total hysterectomy where the uterus, cervix, ovaries, and fallopian tubes are all surgically removed, breaking down the term's meaning from its Greek and Latin roots.

Overview
While it takes nine months to grow a full-term baby, labor and delivery occurs in a matter of days or even hours. However, it’s the process of labor and delivery that tends to occupy the minds of expectant parents the most.
Read on if you have questions and concerns around the signs and length of labor, and how to manage pain.
Signs of labor
Labor has started or is coming soon if you experience symptoms such as:
increased pressure in the uterus
a change of energy levels
a bloody mucus discharge
Real labor has most likely arrived when contractions become regular and are painful.
Braxton Hicks contractions
Many women experience irregular contractions sometime after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Known as Braxton Hicks contractions, they’re typically painless. At most, they’re uncomfortable and are irregular.
Braxton Hicks contractions can sometimes be triggered by an increase in either mother or baby’s activity, or a full bladder. No one fully understands the role Braxton Hicks contractions play in pregnancy.
They may promote blood flow, help maintain uterine health during the pregnancy, or prepare the uterus for childbirth.
Braxton Hicks contractions don’t cause the cervix to dilate. Painful or regular contractions aren’t likely to be Braxton Hicks. Instead, they’re the type of contractions that should lead you to call your doctor.
2. The three stages of labor and deliver are
the Dilation Stage, the Expulsion Stage,
and the Placental Stage
3. 1st Stage: The Dilation Stage is the longest and
involves two phases
• Early Labor Phase – Your cervix gradually
effaces (thins out) and dilates (opens).
• The time of the onset of labor until the cervix is
dilated to 3 cm.
• Active Labor Phase – Your cervix begins to
dilate more rapidly, and contractions are longer,
stronger and closer together
• Continues from 3 cm. until the cervix is dilated to
7 cm.
• Transition Phase – Last part of Active Labor;
continues from 7 cm. until the cervix is fully
dilated to 10 cm.
4. 2nd Stage: Expulsion Stage is
the pushing and delivery phase
• Pushing – After cervix has fully dilated
(10 cm) the real work begins
• Delivery – When the head is finally
visible (Crowns); it comes out the vagina
3rd Stage: Placental Stage is
the delivery of placenta phase
• Afterbirth – your body will contract
again; causing the placenta to separate
from the uterine wall
• You will push out the placenta; your
uterus will begin to shrink
5. The cessation of menstruation is Menopause
Menopause, the word, is a combination of two Greek words which mean month and
terminate.
The ending of a woman’s menstrual cycle.
Endure 12 consecutive months without a menstrual cycle
Menopause happens when a woman's ovaries ceases to function;
therefore eggs are no longer produced
Menstruation ends naturally in middle age with the onset of Menopause
Vary from your 30s to your 50s with the average age of 51
6. One of the longest terms used in medical terminology
refers to the removal of the uterus, cervix, ovaries
and uterine tubes
The term is Total Abdominal
Hysterectomy-Bilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomy
A total abdominal hysterectomy, or TAH, is the removal of your uterus or womb and the cervix
Bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, or BSO is the removal of your fallopian tubes and ovaries
7. Total Abdominal Hysterectomy-Bilateral
Salpingo-Oophorectomy
• abdomin/o = abdomen
• -al = pertaining to
• hyster/o = uterus
• -ectomy = surgical removal
• bi- = two
• later/o = side
• -al = pertaining to
• salping/o = uterine tube
• oophor/o = ovary
• -ectomy = surgical removal
