In simple terms, citations are mentions of a
company around the web.
START HERE:
GOOGLE PLACES FOR BUSINESS
The first step to appearing here is to claim your free
business listing with Google/Bing/Yahoo.
Find or create your business listing:
https://www.google.com/business/placesforbusiness/

Fill out as much business information as possible
including: pictures, hours, payments, etc.
Verify: Google will often allow you to verify over the
phone but sometimes you’ll have to verify by postcard
with the pin they provide.
PRO TIPS:
• The category you select for your business is one of the
most important ranking factors.
• If your business serves customers at their location,
that’s ok. Look for the option to mention this.
• Don’t lie about your business address in an effort to
rank in a city you’re not in. It won’t work. Nor with P.O.
boxes. If you must, get a virtual office.
• Use your local business phone number not your 800 or
toll-free number.
• Ensure consistency across the business Name,
Address and Phone number (NAP) on Google Places
for Business and the website it links to.

  • 7. START HERE: GOOGLE PLACES FOR BUSINESS The first step to appearing here is to claim your free business listing with Google/Bing/Yahoo. Find or create your business listing: https://www.google.com/business/placesforbusiness/ 1 2 3 Fill out as much business information as possible including: pictures, hours, payments, etc. Verify: Google will often allow you to verify over the phone but sometimes you’ll have to verify by postcard with the pin they provide.
  • 8. PRO TIPS: • The category you select for your business is one of the most important ranking factors. • If your business serves customers at their location, that’s ok. Look for the option to mention this. • Don’t lie about your business address in an effort to rank in a city you’re not in. It won’t work. Nor with P.O. boxes. If you must, get a virtual office. • Use your local business phone number not your 800 or toll-free number. • Ensure consistency across the business Name, Address and Phone number (NAP) on Google Places for Business and the website it links to.

They are a trust signal for the search engines. They allow you claim listings across the web so that competitors cannot Citations can often be wrong or have incorrect data- these sites “scrape” the web on their own They are a foundation of a review strategy Common question is: How do we create a citation?
  2. In my opinion manual citations work better for SEO than submitting your site to the paid services. However, these services are more time effective for the busy business owner. You can also get your SEO to build citations for you.
