• Andre Anderson is a respected law enforcement officer who has been credited
with bringing positive change to the community through various initiatives that
he has spearheaded. An educational leadership graduate from Northern Arizona
University, Andre Anderson successfully served as the police chief of the
Ferguson department. Being an innovative leader, he has been recognized both
at a local and national level as a community policing expert.
Community policing is a law enforcement strategy that enables officers to work
in an area on a continuous basis in order to foster a stronger bond with the
citizens that live and work in that area. Through community policing, law
enforcers work closely with local residents to prevent crimes from happening as
opposed to reporting incidents after they occur.
The success of any community policing initiative depends on how well the
concept is implemented. Law enforcement agencies transitioning to community
policy are often faced with both internal and external challenges that need to be
addressed for the initiative to succeed. Internal challenges pertain to the police
service while external challenges exist within the community or community
agencies that are meant to provide key support to community policing efforts.

3. Policing
• Within the police service, police managers, as well as rank and file
officers, need to create an organizational climate that supports
self-critique, continuous learning and embraces change. Internal
opposition to change, power struggles and trust issues can either
facilitate or hinder successful community policing. Community
policing requires a police culture that recognizes the value of
community participation in helping to identify problems and how
to solve them.
External factors outside the police organization and structure can
also hinder the successful implementation of community policing.
For this program to work, the community’s role in problem
identification and coming up with problem-solving strategies
cannot be underestimated. It is good to encourage community
involvement to help in crime prevention. If the community
doesn’t help, many neighborhood security challenges wouldn’t
get the attention of law enforcement agencies.
