The Chain of Infection
1st - Pathogen
-any disease-causing
microorganism
1. 2. 3.
2nd - The Reservoir Host
-refers to any living or
nonliving thing in which the
pathogen may live.
Hosts that do not show any outward signs or
symptoms of a disease but are still capable
of transmitting the disease are known as
carriers.
What are “Carrier Hosts”
3rd - The Portal of Exit
- Refers where the pathogen gets
our from the reservoir.
Examples: respiratory
secretions, blood
exposure, breaks in
skin
Sneezing is one
example of
portal of exit.
What are some
other examples
that you can
give?
4th - The mode of
Transmission
-method by which the pathogen
gets from the reservoir to the
new host
1. 2. 3.
5th - The Portal of Entry
-route through which the
pathogen enters its new host
Respiratory System
Gastrointestinal System
Urinary & Reproductive Tracts
Breaks in Protective Skin Barrier
6th - The Susceptible Host
-the organism that accepts the
pathogen
The support of pathogen life & its
reproduction depend on the degree
of the host’s resistance.
It is important to
understand what
causes an infection
and the various ways it
can be transmitted in
order to avoid it.
Activity in Health 3rd Quarter:
Make a poster on a oslo paper
about how to break or to prevent
the chain of infection.
Reminder
All the
activities
deadline are
