 To improve motor skills and concentration.
 Competing at darts both online and in the classroom.
What is Darts?Talking and Listening
Learning Outcomes for Lesson 1

Present information and results in a clear and organised way
Give reasons for choice of presentation, explaining selected features
and showing insight into the problems structure

What is the score?
I need you to get 23. Where
should you aim?
I need you to get 52. Where should you aim?
The smallest total that can be made with 1 dart is 1.
The largest total that can be made with 1 dart is 60.
Work out which scores between 1 and 60 cannot be scored with 1 dart
Discuss with your partner what strategy you are going to follow to work this out.
What will you need?
Tip – present your work as systematically
as you can.
Think about working it out in a logical
order.
In Pairs
Write down how you would make these totals
in a 3 dart finish
Use the notation D for double and T for triple
a) 124
b) 58
c) 105
d) 91
e) 145
Level 4
2nd level
A shanghai is when three darts land on the same number but one is a single,
one is a double and one is a treble.
Work out the shanghai for 1,2,3,4 and 5.
What do you notice about all your totals?
Why do you think this happens?
Level 5
For level 5 you must give reasons for your
answer
2nd level
A score of 10 can be made with lots of different 3 dart finishes.
Work out all the different 3 dart finishes (ending on a double for 2nd level) that
would make a score of 10.
Tip – present your work as systematically
as you can.
Think about working it out in a logical
order.
Level 6
1st level
A score of 15 can be made with lots of different 3 dart finishes.
Work out all the different 3 dart finishes (ending on a double for 2nd) that would
make a score of 15.
Tip – present your work as systematically
as you can.
Think about working it out in a logical
order.
Level 6
1st level
Some scores, such as 180 only have 1 three-dart finish.
Other scores, like 105, have lots of three dart finishes.
Which score between 4 and 180 has the greatest number of different three dart
finishes?
This is a long problem. Think about how you would
work out combinations systematically, in a logical
order.
Make sure you present your results clearly.

What are the highest possible
scores with
•1 dart?
•2 darts?
•3 darts?

 With two darts it is possible to score 5 in six
different ways. These are 1+4, 2+3, 1+ d2, d1
+3 and 2+t1.
 With 2 darts it is possible to score 7 in nine

The rules of darts require that a player must start
and finish with a double. List how a player might
achieve the following totals in the stated (minimum)
number of throws.
(a)301 in 6 throws
(b)501 in 9
(c)1001 in 7
2nd level
With 3 darts all scores up to 160 are
obtainable (except 0,1,2 if all score) and
the maximum possible is 180. However,
there are some scores between 160 and
180 which cannot be made. What are
they?
2nd level
There are 20 sectors on the board, so
any 5 adjacent sectors make up a quarter
of the board. Which quarter of the board
gives the highest total when the numbers
around its outside edge are added up?
Beginner Level
Pick up a dart board worksheet.
Colour in all the even numbers red
and the odd numbers blue.
How many even numbers are there
on the dart board?
How many odd numbers are there
on the dart board?
Pick up a dart board worksheet.
Imagine you are playing darts. You
score 28. Colour the areas in which
your dart has landed.

Hitting three different green segments
of a darts board what is the highest
number you can achieve in three
darts?
2nd level
Give two examples of checking out
82 with two darts. You must finish on
a double!
2nd level
What is the sum or total of all the
scoring segments on a dart board?
