Early Muslim invaders began conquering parts of western India in the 8th century, eventually spreading across much of the subcontinent between 1000-1500 AD. While Hinduism and Islam were distinct religions with cultural differences, over time interactions increased between the two populations as Muslims migrated to cities in India and occasionally converted local groups. However, Hindus largely did not convert and the two groups generally lived separately despite some integration within political and economic systems.
