Quakers were the first religious group to oppose slavery in Britain. John Newton, a former slave ship captain, became a prominent critic of slavery after writing the hymn "Amazing Grace" and renouncing his past. William Wilberforce, a British MP, led the successful parliamentary campaign to abolish slavery in the British Empire with support from the Committee for the Abolition of the Slave Trade.
