Usability expert Dana Chisnell conducted a study of 147 US election websites and 41 remote usability tests to evaluate their effectiveness. She found that many sites had poor navigation, unclear labels, and lacked priority voter information like what will be on the ballot. As a result, voters often struggled to find answers and relied on third-party sources instead. Chisnell recommends election sites focus on establishing credibility, prioritizing key content like ballot details and voting options, and improving their information architecture to better guide voters through the electoral process. She is producing a "Field Guides" series to provide research-based best practices for designing usable election websites and materials.
