Abstract With the emphasis lying on increasing fuel efficiency of vehicles in order to combat rising fuel prices and environmental
challenges the manufacturers are thinking beyond the conventional vehicle systems by focusing on its aerodynamics. Aerodynamic
drag exceeds 50 per cent of the total resistance to motion at speeds above 70km/hr, and above 100 km/hr it is the most important
factor. The review is done to identify the various shortcomings of the automotive designers when it is in regards to flow
separation of air at the rear of the vehicle which causes most of the losses. This paper focuses on the work already done in the
field of aerodynamics starting with Ahmed Body. It is a bluff body with adjustable rear slant angle and the basis upon which the
aerodynamicists test their models. And then, moving onto passive aerodynamic enhancements for automobiles like vortex
generators and diffusers whose various dimensional modulations were discussed with several steps leading to its advancement in
vehicle body design. This brings to the simulation, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and its role in this analysis was
covered. CFD has been modified a lot from the beginning to increase the accuracy of its predictions. So the paper lists various
simulation techniques studied by the previous researchers in order to understand the wake region behind the car which has been
notoriously difficult to predict till date. Several aspects of aerodynamic drag that need further analysis to improve the
aerodynamic were highlighted.

This work proposes an effective numerical model based on the Computational Fluid Dynamics
(CFD) approach to obtain the flow structure around a passenger car with Tail Plates. The experimental work of
the test vehicle and grid system is constructed by ANSYS-14.0. FLUENT which is the CFD solver & employed in
the present work. In this study, numerical iterations are completed, then after aerodynamic data and detailed
complicated flow structure are visualized.
In the present work, model of generic passenger car has been developed in solid works-10 and
generated the wind tunnel and applied the boundary conditions in ANSYS workbench 14.0 platform then after
testing and simulation has been performed for the evaluation of drag coefficient for passenger car. In another
case, the aerodynamics of the most suitable design of tail plate is introduced and analysedfor the evaluation of
drag coefficient for passenger car. The addition of tail plates results in a reduction of the drag-coefficient
3.87% and lift coefficient 16.62% in head-on wind. Rounding the edges partially reduces drag in head-on wind
but does not bring about the significant improvements in the aerodynamic efficiency of the passenger car with
tail plates, it can be obtained. Hence, the drag force can be reduced by using add on devices on vehicle and fuel
economy, stability of a passenger car can be improved.

The Project Poster summarizes the aims and objectives of the Final Year Dissertation. The project starts with a detailed study on the parameters that tend to affect the performance of front wings of an F1 car and goes through designing the front wings(3) with endplates and wheel, meshing it, solving/analysing the flow and finally optimising the selected geometry using Fluent Adjoint Solver for efficient performance.
Adjoint optimisation technique is used to achieve optimal performance from the front wings. It's the most successful shape optimisation method as it's independent of the number of design variables exponentially reducing computational time and cost. The emphasis has been put on optimising the shape of the front wings using the Adjoint method as it’s the most efficient and computationally inexpensive method for design optimisation. The approach towards shape optimisation is downforce constrained drag minimization as it would result in keeping a constraint on downforce and reducing the drag at the same time, thus producing optima for a given downforce/drag value.

Every country is aiming to develop its power over all the aspects that considered for comparison with other countries in order to stand at same level of competition with others. One such power considered by all countries to develop every possible way to have a healthy competition is the military power which involves basically innovations of fast moving aircraft having a high lift coefficient and low drag coefficient. Such an aircraft having the high lift and low drag coefficient is TEJAS (HAL) developed by country India on which the purpose of paper mainly sustains. The paper mainly focuses on steady-state flow analysis over aircraft TEJAS using the computer aided modelling techniques and also the comparison of the results obtained from the modelled techniques. The paper also outlines the designing of the structural model of the TEJAS in a modelling software, creation of a finite computational domain, segmentation of this domain into discrete intervals, applying boundary conditions such as velocity in order to obtain plots and desired results determining the coefficient of pressure, lift and drag coefficient, velocity magnitude etc. This paper also aims in creating awareness to the future students about the techniques involved and knowledge required for developing a designed modelled. This paper also highlights the use of CFD techniques involved for the purpose of fluid flow simulation of the aircraft especially performing the meshing techniques, pre and post processing techniques and finally the evaluation of the simulation. Finally this paper can be seen as source by future generation students in gaining knowledge about design, analysis and simulation of the structured model on various conditions, about the field of aerospace engineering and new innovations being developed and also about the career involved when the above fields were chosen foe specialization purposes

Infrastructure Requirements for Urban Air Mobility: A Financial EvaluationAndrew Wilhelm
The purpose of this research is to determine the financial feasibility of an urban air mobility (UAM) system. The evaluation will consider the infrastructure requirements and how they relate to those of existing urban mass transit services. Forces driving this innovation involve the long commute times within metropolitan areas. To rectify the problem, public mass transportation is commonly implemented in these localities. Cost for this solution is economically justified by improvements to travel time, operating, environmental, noise, and accident factors as compared to individual automobiles. A financial model for urban mass transportation is built around these characteristics and is the basis for UAM. To be competitive with the incumbent technology, new designs must meet four benchmark requirements. These entail an air vehicle that costs less than $10 million, travel that is three times faster than ground-based services, seating for 55 adults, and the capability of continuous operation. Should these criteria be met, the proposed solution will have an economic value roughly equal to that of those currently in place. The implementation of UAM can be conducted by either a clean slate or incremental approach. A real options analysis indicates that the project NPV will be similar between the two, but the latter carries less financial risk. Maintaining both systems until UAM is made sustainable attributes to this reduction. Other risks considered involve regulatory, operating, and performance concerns. The largest of which is the lack of information on future UAM air vehicle maintenance. During the financial modeling, it is assumed that the proposed operating cost is equivalent to the existing service, which is not necessarily the case. Given proper risk mitigation, the incremental implementation plan details how UAM will satisfy regulatory requirements and transition into operation. Governmental authorities are expected to take between six and eight years validating the system. In all, the proposed UAM solution will take ten years to implement and have an economic value of $48.2 million.

Along with wide use of internal combustion engines for this purpose comes the massive consumption of fossil fuels by vehicles. Most of the research today is toward making efficient machines. This paper mainly deals with providing attachments to existing models of vehicle to make it more efficient. An assessment of the impact of aerodynamic drag and its relationship to energy consumption presented. A few models are designed and analysed for reducing drag with the help of Attachments. Solid works is used to model and ANSYS Fluent is used for CFD analysis. The results of Cd of various configuration is analysed, 0.427 being the Cd for conventional Van is reduced to 0.234 for van with front and rear attachment.

The main aim of this project is to find the best performance and deformation limit of the wing on different Mach numbers. This project is completely done by numerical methods of designing the wing using CATIA and flow properties in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method. Finally, the structural analysis for deformation is analysed in ANSYS. The analytical approach of fluid-structure interaction over an Aircraft wing is complex.

In present paper, a methodology is presented related to the optimization of semi-active quarter car model
suspension parameters having three degrees of freedom, subjected to bump type of road excitation.
Influence of primary suspension stiffness, primary suspension damping, secondary suspension stiffness and
secondary suspension damping are studied on the passenger ride comfort, taking root mean square (RMS)
values of passenger seat displacement and settling time into account. Semi-active quarter car model
assembled with magneto-rheological (MR) shock absorber is selected for optimization of suspension
parameters using Taguchi method in combination with Grey relational analysis. Confirmatory results with
simulation run indicates that the optimized results of suspension parameters are helpful in achieving the
best ride comfort to travelling passengers in terms of minimization of passenger seat displacement and
settling time values.

Abstract
Drive shafts in commercial heavy duty vehicle are subjected to cyclic loads due to variation in the torque demanded by the
varying road loads. Cases of failure of the drive shaft of heavy duty trucks have been reported, which provides an opportunity to
investigate the issue.
In this project an attempt has been made on prediction of fatigue life of the drive shaft using FEA technique. The load spectrum
acting on the drive shaft is calculated for specified terrain. Structural analysis was carried out on the FE model of drive shaft, and
potential areas of high stress concentration are obtained. Von Mises stress, fatigue damage, fatigue life, factor of safety and total
deformation are the results of fatigue analysis.
It was observed that from the static analysis that the roots of the splines are the areas of high stress concentration. The fatigue
analysis revels that the drive shaft fails in the region of high stress concentration as expected. The fatigue life of the component is
found to be infinite for design pay load. The life of the drive shaft for 40% and 50% over load is 69806 kilometers and 20564
kilometers respectively. The present work can be used in automobile industry as a reference for predicting life of any component,
in the drive line of the automobile subjected to non constant amplitude loading.

Investigation of slipstreaming effect between a semi trailer truck and a seda...Researchshare4200
The study focuses on the slipstreaming effect on an aerodynamic sedan vehicle, trailing a semi-trailer truck on highways. A Subsonic wind tunnel (100×100×100 cm) is used to investigate the effect of slipstreaming. For design purpose, solid works software is used. Wooden models of semi-trailer truck and a sedan car have been constructed. In this experiment, the effect of distance of separation of the vehicles to slipstreaming has been studied and the critical distance is identified. The relative drag during slipstreaming at different velocities of the critical distance has also been addressed. From this investigation it has been observed that slipstreaming is effective at higher velocities of the vehicles under consideration.

In the field of commercial goods transport, trucks have an important place. One of the main problems faced by truck manufacturers is the Air resistance associated with the highway running. Since trucks have a large frontal area and the presence of a trailer also leads to the truck experiencing significant resistance which has to be overcome. This can be reduced through the use of wind deflectors. A well-designed wind deflector can reduce wind resistance to a certain extent. Optimizing the angle of the wind deflector also causes reduced drag force acting on the vehicle, thereby reducing the fuel intake. Here the initial drag of 2050 N is reduced to 1688.453 N using a 1.75 m wind deflector at 45 degree angle resulting in the reduction of drag by 17.6%.

The performance of a sports car is not only limited to its engine power but also to aerodynamic properties of the car. By decreasing the drag force it is possible to reduce the engine power required to achieve same top speed thus decreasing the fuel requirement. The stability of a sports car is considerably important at high speed. The provision of a rear wing increases the downforce thus reducing the rear axle lift and provides increased traction. In this study an optimum rear wing is designed for the high performance car so as to decrease drag and increase downforce. The CAD designed baseline model with or without rear wing is being analyzed in computational fluid dynamics software. The lift and drag coefficient are calculated for all the design thus an optimum rear wing is designed for the considered baseline model.

The stability of a sports car is considerably important at high speed. The provision of a rear wing increases the downforce thus reducing the rear axle lift and provides increased traction. In this study an optimum rear wing is designed for the high performance car so as to decrease drag and increase downforce. The CAD designed baseline model with or without rear wing is being analyzed in computational fluid dynamics software. The lift and drag coefficient are calculated for all the design thus an optimum rear wing is designed for the considered baseline model.

Reducing vehicle fuel consumption has become one of the most important issues in recent years. Aerodynamic drag contributes to 50-60% of fuel consumption in trucks on highways. Vehicle aerodynamic performance is mainly determined by drag coefficient, which directly affects engine requirements and fuel consumption. It’s well known that drag changes in a crosswind compared with a condition without a crosswind, and that the change depends on the vehicle shape. Pressure drag, a major drag for trucks as they run at lower speeds is produced by the shape of the object. Therefore, addition of some components can suffice the need. The vehicle has been designed by using Catia and then analysed with CFD. The values are compared and the resultant drag reduction is calculated.

The presented study describes the aerodynamic behavior of a compact, single occupant, automotive vehicle. To
optimize the aerodynamic characteristics of this vehicle, a flow dynamics study was conducted using a virtual
model. The outer surfaces of the vehicle body were designed using Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools and its
aerodynamic performance simulated virtually using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software. Parameters
such as pressure coefficient (Cp), coefficient of friction (Cf) and graphical analysis of the streamlines were used
to understand the flow dynamics and propose recommendations aimed at improving the coefficient of drag (Cd).
The identification of interaction points between the fluid and the flow structure was the primary focus of study to
develop these propositions. The study of phenomena linked to the characteristics of the model presented here,
allowed the identification of design features that should be avoided to generate improved aerodynamic
performance.

Aerodynamics pertaining to vehicles focuses on improving the drive-ability of the vehicle while also reducing
losses due to air drag. This paper focuses on maximizing the cornering performance of the formula student race car with
slight modifications to the airflow around the vehicle and meagre addition of weight. The undertray produces downloads
by altering the velocity of air flowing underneath it. The sidepods act to reduce flow velocity above the undertray, thus
increasing the pressure above it. This leads to an increased pressure difference over the surface of the undertray which
translates to increase in downforce. The car is able to have a 10% decrease in lap times on a 500m racetrack.

Aerodynamic Drag Reduction for A Generic Sport Utility Vehicle Using Rear Suc...IJERA Editor
The high demand for new and improved aerodynamic drag reduction devices has led to the invention of flow control mechanisms and continuous suction is a promising strategy that does not have major impact on vehicle geometry. The implementation of this technique on sport utility vehicles (SUV) requires adequate choice of the size and location of the opening as well as the magnitude of the boundary suction velocity. In this paper we introduce a new methodology to identifying these parameters for maximum reduction in aerodynamic drag. The technique combines automatic modeling of the suction slit, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and a global search method using orthogonal arrays. It is shown that a properly designed suction mechanism can reduce drag by up to 9%.
Mechanical properties of hybrid fiber reinforced concrete for pavementseSAT Journals
Abstract
The effect of addition of mono fibers and hybrid fibers on the mechanical properties of concrete mixture is studied in the present
investigation. Steel fibers of 1% and polypropylene fibers 0.036% were added individually to the concrete mixture as mono fibers and
then they were added together to form a hybrid fiber reinforced concrete. Mechanical properties such as compressive, split tensile and
flexural strength were determined. The results show that hybrid fibers improve the compressive strength marginally as compared to
mono fibers. Whereas, hybridization improves split tensile strength and flexural strength noticeably.

Abstract
The objective of the present study is to understand about all the problems occurring in the company because of improper application
of material management. In construction project operation, often there is a project cost variance in terms of the material, equipments,
manpower, subcontractor, overhead cost, and general condition. Material is the main component in construction projects. Therefore,
if the material management is not properly managed it will create a project cost variance. Project cost can be controlled by taking
corrective actions towards the cost variance. Therefore a methodology is used to diagnose and evaluate the procurement process
involved in material management and launch a continuous improvement was developed and applied. A thorough study was carried
out along with study of cases, surveys and interviews to professionals involved in this area. As a result, a methodology for diagnosis
and improvement was proposed and tested in selected projects. The results obtained show that the main problem of procurement is
related to schedule delays and lack of specified quality for the project. To prevent this situation it is often necessary to dedicate
important resources like money, personnel, time, etc. To monitor and control the process. A great potential for improvement was
detected if state of the art technologies such as, electronic mail, electronic data interchange (EDI), and analysis were applied to the
procurement process. These helped to eliminate the root causes for many types of problems that were detected.

prone areas are helpful to achieve tangible and permanent solution for this recurring problem. The Gulbarga district having the total
area around 16, 240 sq.km, and accounts 8.45 per cent of the Karnataka state area. The district has been situated with latitude 17º 19'
60" North and longitude of 76 º 49' 60" east. The district is situated entirely on the Deccan plateau positioned at a height of 300 to
750 m above MSL. Sub-tropical, semi-arid type is one among the drought prone districts of Karnataka State. The drought
management is very important for a district like Gulbarga. In this paper various short term strategies are discussed to mitigate the
drought condition in the district.

Life cycle cost analysis of overlay for an urban road in bangaloreeSAT Journals
Abstract
Pavements are subjected to severe condition of stresses and weathering effects from the day they are constructed and opened to traffic
mainly due to its fatigue behavior and environmental effects. Therefore, pavement rehabilitation is one of the most important
components of entire road systems. This paper highlights the design of concrete pavement with added mono fibers like polypropylene,
steel and hybrid fibres for a widened portion of existing concrete pavement and various overlay alternatives for an existing
bituminous pavement in an urban road in Bangalore. Along with this, Life cycle cost analyses at these sections are done by Net
Present Value (NPV) method to identify the most feasible option. The results show that though the initial cost of construction of
concrete overlay is high, over a period of time it prove to be better than the bituminous overlay considering the whole life cycle cost.
The economic analysis also indicates that, out of the three fibre options, hybrid reinforced concrete would be economical without
compromising the performance of the pavement.

Laboratory studies of dense bituminous mixes ii with reclaimed asphalt materialseSAT Journals
Abstract
The issue of growing demand on our nation’s roadways over that past couple of decades, decreasing budgetary funds, and the need to
provide a safe, efficient, and cost effective roadway system has led to a dramatic increase in the need to rehabilitate our existing
pavements and the issue of building sustainable road infrastructure in India. With these emergency of the mentioned needs and this
are today’s burning issue and has become the purpose of the study.
In the present study, the samples of existing bituminous layer materials were collected from NH-48(Devahalli to Hassan) site.The
mixtures were designed by Marshall Method as per Asphalt institute (MS-II) at 20% and 30% Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP).
RAP material was blended with virgin aggregate such that all specimens tested for the, Dense Bituminous Macadam-II (DBM-II)
gradation as per Ministry of Roads, Transport, and Highways (MoRT&H) and cost analysis were carried out to know the economics.
Laboratory results and analysis showed the use of recycled materials showed significant variability in Marshall Stability, and the
variability increased with the increase in RAP content. The saving can be realized from utilization of recycled materials as per the
methodology, the reduction in the total cost is 19%, 30%, comparing with the virgin mixes.

Laboratory investigation of expansive soil stabilized with natural inorganic ...eSAT Journals
Abstract
Soil stabilization has proven to be one of the oldest techniques to improve the soil properties. Literature review conducted revealed
that uses of natural inorganic stabilizers are found to be one of the best options for soil stabilization. In this regard an attempt has
been made to evaluate the influence of RBI-81 stabilizer on properties of black cotton soil through laboratory investigations. Black
cotton soil with varying percentages of RBI-81 viz., 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, and 2.5 percent were studied for moisture density relationships
and strength behaviour of soils. Also the effect of curing period was evaluated as literature review clearly emphasized the strength
gain of soils stabilized with RBI-81 over a period of time. The results obtained shows that the unconfined compressive strength of
specimens treated with RBI-81 increased approximately by 250% for a curing period of 28 days as compared to virgin soil. Further
the CBR value improved approximately by 400%. The studies indicated an increasing trend for soil strength behaviour with
increasing percentage of RBI-81 suggesting its potential applications in soil stabilization.
Influence of reinforcement on the behavior of hollow concrete block masonry p...eSAT Journals
Abstract
Reinforced masonry was developed to exploit the strength potential of masonry and to solve its lack of tensile strength. Experimental
and analytical studies have been carried out to investigate the effect of reinforcement on the behavior of hollow concrete block
masonry prisms under compression and to predict ultimate failure compressive strength. In the numerical program, three dimensional
non-linear finite elements (FE) model based on the micro-modeling approach is developed for both unreinforced and reinforced
masonry prisms using ANSYS (14.5). The proposed FE model uses multi-linear stress-strain relationships to model the non-linear
behavior of hollow concrete block, mortar, and grout. Willam-Warnke’s five parameter failure theory has been adopted to model the
failure of masonry materials. The comparison of the numerical and experimental results indicates that the FE models can successfully
capture the highly nonlinear behavior of the physical specimens and accurately predict their strength and failure mechanisms.

Influence of compaction energy on soil stabilized with chemical stabilizereSAT Journals
Abstract
Increase in traffic along with heavier magnitude of wheel loads cause rapid deterioration in pavements. There is a need to improve
density, strength of soil subgrade and other pavement layers. In this study an attempt is made to improve the properties of locally
available loamy soil using twin approaches viz., i) increasing the compaction of soil and ii) treating the soil with chemical stabilizer.
Laboratory studies are carried out on both untreated and treated soil samples compacted by different compaction efforts. Studies
show that increase in compaction effort results in increase in density of soil. However in soil treated with chemical stabilizer, rate of
increase in density is not significant. The soil treated with chemical stabilizer exhibits improvement in both strength and performance
properties.

Integrated watershed development and management is the accepted answer but in turn requires a comprehensive framework that can
enable planning process involving all the stakeholders at different levels and scales is compulsory. Such a unified hydrological
framework is essential to evaluate the cause and effect of all the proposed actions within the drainage basins.
The present paper describes a hydrological framework developed in the form of a Hydrologic Information System (HIS) which is
intended to meet the specific information needs of the various line departments of a typical State connected with water related aspects.
The HIS consist of a hydrologic information database coupled with tools for collating primary and secondary data and tools for
analyzing and visualizing the data and information. The HIS also incorporates hydrological model base for indirect assessment of
various entities of water balance in space and time. The framework would be maintained and updated to reflect fully the most
accurate ground truth data and the infrastructure requirements for planning and management.

The study demonstrate the potentiality of satellite remote sensing technique for the generation of baseline information on forest types
including tree plantation details in Bidar forest division, Karnataka covering an area of 5814.60Sq.Kms. The Total Area of Bidar
forest division is 5814Sq.Kms analysis of the satellite data in the study area reveals that about 84% of the total area is Covered by
crop land, 1.778% of the area is covered by dry deciduous forest, 1.38 % of mixed plantation, which is very threatening to the
environmental stability of the forest, future plantation site has been mapped. With the use of latest Geo-informatics technology proper
and exact condition of the trees can be observed and necessary precautions can be taken for future plantation works in an appropriate
manner

Factors influencing compressive strength of geopolymer concreteeSAT Journals
Abstract
To study effects of several factors on the properties of fly ash based geopolymer concrete on the compressive strength and also the
cost comparison with the normal concrete. The test variables were molarities of sodium hydroxide(NaOH) 8M,14M and 16M, ratio of
NaOH to sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) 1, 1.5, 2 and 2.5, alkaline liquid to fly ash ratio 0.35 and 0.40 and replacement of water in
Na2SiO3 solution by 10%, 20% and 30% were used in the present study. The test results indicated that the highest compressive
strength 54 MPa was observed for 16M of NaOH, ratio of NaOH to Na2SiO3 2.5 and alkaline liquid to fly ash ratio of 0.35. Lowest
compressive strength of 27 MPa was observed for 8M of NaOH, ratio of NaOH to Na2SiO3 is 1 and alkaline liquid to fly ash ratio of
0.40. Alkaline liquid to fly ash ratio of 0.35, water replacement of 10% and 30% for 8 and 16 molarity of NaOH and has resulted in
compressive strength of 36 MPa and 20 MPa respectively. Superplasticiser dosage of 2 % by weight of fly ash has given higher
strength in all cases.

Abstract
Composite Circular hollow Steel tubes with and without GFRP infill for three different grades of Light weight concrete are tested for
ultimate load capacity and axial shortening , under Cyclic loading. Steel tubes are compared for different lengths, cross sections and
thickness. Specimens were tested separately after adopting Taguchi’s L9 (Latin Squares) Orthogonal array in order to save the initial
experimental cost on number of specimens and experimental duration. Analysis was carried out using ANN (Artificial Neural
Network) technique with the assistance of Mini Tab- a statistical soft tool. Comparison for predicted, experimental & ANN output is
obtained from linear regression plots. From this research study, it can be concluded that *Cross sectional area of steel tube has most
significant effect on ultimate load carrying capacity, *as length of steel tube increased- load carrying capacity decreased & *ANN
modeling predicted acceptable results. Thus ANN tool can be utilized for predicting ultimate load carrying capacity for composite
columns.

This paper presents an outlook on experimental behavior and a comparison with predicted formula on the behaviour of circular
concentrically loaded self-consolidating fibre reinforced concrete filled steel tube columns (HSSCFRC). Forty-five specimens were
tested. The main parameters varied in the tests are: (1) percentage of fiber (2) tube diameter or width to wall thickness ratio (D/t
from 15 to 25) (3) L/d ratio from 2.97 to 7.04 the results from these predictions were compared with the experimental data. The
experimental results) were also validated in this study.

Evaluation of punching shear in flat slabseSAT Journals
Abstract
Flat-slab construction has been widely used in construction today because of many advantages that it offers. The basic philosophy in
the design of flat slab is to consider only gravity forces; this method ignores the effect of punching shear due to unbalanced moments
at the slab column junction which is critical. An attempt has been made to generate generalized design sheets which accounts both
punching shear due to gravity loads and unbalanced moments for cases (a) interior column; (b) edge column (bending perpendicular
to shorter edge); (c) edge column (bending parallel to shorter edge); (d) corner column. These design sheets are prepared as per
codal provisions of IS 456-2000. These design sheets will be helpful in calculating the shear reinforcement to be provided at the
critical section which is ignored in many design offices. Apart from its usefulness in evaluating punching shear and the necessary
shear reinforcement, the design sheets developed will enable the designer to fix the depth of flat slab during the initial phase of the
design.

Efficiency of the road network system is analyzed by travel time reliability measures. The study overlooks on an important measure of
travel time reliability and prioritizing Tiruchirappalli road network. Traffic volume and travel time were collected using license plate
matching method. Travel time measures were estimated from average travel time and 95th travel time. Effect of non-motorized vehicle
on efficiency of road system was evaluated. Relation between buffer time index and traffic volume was created. Travel time model has
been developed and travel time measure was validated. Then service quality of road sections in network were graded based on
travel time reliability measures.

Estimation of surface runoff in nallur amanikere watershed using scs cn methodeSAT Journals
Abstract
The development of watershed aims at productive utilization of all the available natural resources in the entire area extending from
ridge line to stream outlet. The per capita availability of land for cultivation has been decreasing over the years. Therefore, water and
the related land resources must be developed, utilized and managed in an integrated and comprehensive manner. Remote sensing and
GIS techniques are being increasingly used for planning, management and development of natural resources. The study area, Nallur
Amanikere watershed geographically lies between 110 38’ and 110 52’ N latitude and 760 30’ and 760 50’ E longitude with an area of
415.68 Sq. km. The thematic layers such as land use/land cover and soil maps were derived from remotely sensed data and overlayed
through ArcGIS software to assign the curve number on polygon wise. The daily rainfall data of six rain gauge stations in and around
the watershed (2001-2011) was used to estimate the daily runoff from the watershed using Soil Conservation Service - Curve Number
(SCS-CN) method. The runoff estimated from the SCS-CN model was then used to know the variation of runoff potential with different
land use/land cover and with different soil conditions.

Abstract
Land and water are the two vital natural resources, the optimal management of these resources with minimum adverse environmental
impact are essential not only for sustainable development but also for human survival. Satellite remote sensing with geographic
information system has a pragmatic approach to map and generate spatial input layers of predicting response behavior and yield of
watershed. Hence, in the present study an attempt has been made to understand the hydrological process of the catchment at the
watershed level by drawing the inferences from moprhometric analysis and runoff. The study area chosen for the present study is
Yagachi catchment situated in Chickamaglur and Hassan district lies geographically at a longitude 75⁰52’08.77”E and
13⁰10’50.77”N latitude. It covers an area of 559.493 Sq.km. Morphometric analysis is carried out to estimate morphometric
parameters at Micro-watershed to understand the hydrological response of the catchment at the Micro-watershed level. Daily runoff
is estimated using USDA SCS curve number model for a period of 10 years from 2001 to 2010. The rainfall runoff relationship of the
study shows there is a positive correlation.

Abstract The nonlinear Static procedure also well known as pushover analysis is method where in monotonically increasing loads are applied to the structure till the structure is unable to resist any further load. It is a popular tool for seismic performance evaluation of existing and new structures. In literature lot of research has been carried out on conventional pushover analysis and after knowing deficiency efforts have been made to improve it. But actual test results to verify the analytically obtained pushover results are rarely available. It has been found that some amount of variation is always expected to exist in seismic demand prediction of pushover analysis. Initial study is carried out by considering user defined hinge properties and default hinge length. Attempt is being made to assess the variation of pushover analysis results by considering user defined hinge properties and various hinge length formulations available in literature and results compared with experimentally obtained results based on test carried out on a G+2 storied RCC framed structure. For the present study two geometric models viz bare frame and rigid frame model is considered and it is found that the results of pushover analysis are very sensitive to geometric model and hinge length adopted. Abstract
Depletion of natural resources and aggregate quarries for the road construction is a serious problem to procure materials. Hence
recycling or reuse of material is beneficial. On emphasizing development in sustainable construction in the present era, recycling of
asphalt pavements is one of the effective and proven rehabilitation processes. For the laboratory investigations reclaimed asphalt
pavement (RAP) from NH-4 and crumb rubber modified binder (CRMB-55) was used. Foundry waste was used as a replacement to
conventional filler. Laboratory tests were conducted on asphalt concrete mixes with 30, 40, 50, and 60 percent replacement with RAP.
These test results were compared with conventional mixes and asphalt concrete mixes with complete binder extracted RAP
aggregates. Mix design was carried out by Marshall Method. The Marshall Tests indicated highest stability values for asphalt
concrete (AC) mixes with 60% RAP. The optimum binder content (OBC) decreased with increased in RAP in AC mixes. The Indirect
Tensile Strength (ITS) for AC mixes with RAP also was found to be higher when compared to conventional AC mixes at 300C.

Abstract
With the emphasis lying on increasing fuel efficiency of vehicles in order to combat rising fuel prices and environmental
challenges the manufacturers are thinking beyond the conventional vehicle systems by focusing on its aerodynamics. Aerodynamic
drag exceeds 50 per cent of the total resistance to motion at speeds above 70km/hr, and above 100 km/hr it is the most important
factor. The review is done to identify the various shortcomings of the automotive designers when it is in regards to flow
separation of air at the rear of the vehicle which causes most of the losses. This paper focuses on the work already done in the
field of aerodynamics starting with Ahmed Body. It is a bluff body with adjustable rear slant angle and the basis upon which the
aerodynamicists test their models. And then, moving onto passive aerodynamic enhancements for automobiles like vortex
generators and diffusers whose various dimensional modulations were discussed with several steps leading to its advancement in
vehicle body design. This brings to the simulation, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and its role in this analysis was
covered. CFD has been modified a lot from the beginning to increase the accuracy of its predictions. So the paper lists various
simulation techniques studied by the previous researchers in order to understand the wake region behind the car which has been
notoriously difficult to predict till date. Several aspects of aerodynamic drag that need further analysis to improve the
aerodynamic were highlighted.

1. INTRODUCTION
Automotive industry is the second most researched
engineering field in the world after aerospace. Cars used to
be very crude and unrefined but with the passage of time the
manufacturers had to device methods to refine the vehicle in
order to improve its working condition as well as to improve
its performance efficiencies. The obvious first choice was to
start from the engine. And after initial high performance
gains the design of these engines and its components are
nearing its maximum potential and the gains are not as much
as it used to be earlier. So the manufacturers are veering into
different areas to gain more performance. They now design
every component of every system of the vehicle to work at
its highest efficiency while being as lightweight as possible.
Another area where manufacturers are interested to work
upon is the aerodynamics of it. With massive gains in
performance and handling characteristics of the vehicle as
shown by the race cars over the years with aerodynamic
devices attached to them, commercial vehicle manufacturers
are now bucking the trend and more interested to
incorporate a more aerodynamic design to their vehicles.

Fig-1 depicts the fuel economy offered by the car at various
speeds and how it varies in accordance with the drag
coefficient. According to Hucho [1] in a medium-sized
European car, aerodynamic drag accounts for nearly 80% of
total road resistance at 100kmph. So it is very binding on the
designers to focus on decreasing this drag by implementing
design changes at the rear and also by the addition of the
passive control devices. Krishnani [2] had described the fuel
usage of cars in both urban and highway driving. The
vehicle shape uses about 3% of fuel to overcome the
resistance it offers in urban driving whereas it takes 11% of
fuel in case of highway driving. And this considerable

increase of fuel usage at cruising speeds is what attracts
several automotive research centers to automotive
aerodynamics. This led to optimization of car aerodynamics
more precisely the reduction of the drag coefficient (Cd)
which is mostly characterized by the outer shape of the
vehicle [3].
The automotive research centers across the globe then
started designing cars that were more slippery in the air
which would give minimum drag coefficient (Cd). Earlier
the CD values ranged from 0.7-0.65 for the old box shaped
car profiles. But now it has come down to around 0.3 for the
recent streamlined bodies [5]. But aerodynamics has always
remained a very expensive proposition and wasn’t
entertained by the small and medium car manufacturing
industries.And to solve it analytically was near to impossible
because, the turbulence created behind the vehicle was
where most of the power losses occurred and it was
impossible to write equations to solve for the same. There
was boundary layer separation, complex wake flow, long
trailing vortices which were getting generated at the rear but
it was unable to solve for the same analytically and hence
this was a grey area in aerodynamics. But with the advent of
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), the computers are
capable of solving such equations and being very fast at the
same time. Anderson Jr.[6] describes CFD as the art of
using discretized algebraic forms in place of integrals or
the partial derivatives , which in turn are solved to obtain
numbers for the flow field values at discrete points in
time/space. So the focus has again gradually shifted to
passive flow devices which improve the drag and lift forces
acting on the body. Various researchers [3,7,8] have
concluded that CFD is an approximation of the equations by
averaging it with time. But more complex equations need to
be solved to get more accurate results. As such CFD is now
more of a research tool than a design tool and it can be
calibrated with experimental data to ascertain its accuracy.
2. DRAG REDUCTION EFFORTS
2.1 Ahmed Body:
Ahmed et al. [9] designed a simple model for a car as shown
in Fig-2 and this constituted of nose shaped front and a
movable slant plane at the rear to conduct experiments at
different rear angles to study the flow pattern.The nose and
the slant plane was connected by a rectangular box. Wake
separation flow behind the Ahmed body is the main
contributor to the drag force, therefore its accurate
prediction is important. Further experimental investigations
included the effect of back light angles in the range of 00
to
400
.

They concluded that aerodynamic drag was very dependent
on the rear slanted window and the critical angle was about
30o
. For the angles lower than critical value, the flow
separated at the roof of the vehicle. It reattached at the slant
region and then separated again as it approached the rear.
When the angle was near to 30o
the form drag increased
drastically and then beyond the critical value of α, the drag
reduced again and was more or less constant till the
maximum value of α. Morel [12] observed that the 90% of
the pressure drag force is contributed by slant surface and
the rear base . The rear base alone accounts for more than
70% of the total drag force. The values recorded by Morel
and Ahmed were graphically compared by Dumas [11] as
shown in Fig-3.

For a standard car, Table-1 displays the contribution of total
drag over various elements of the car.It shows in particular
that 70% of the drag coefficient depends on the external
shape. Such a large value justifies the interest of a numerical
modeling of the problem in order to find innovative external
shapes that will largely reduce the drag coefficient.

2.2 Diffusers
A diffuser is an aerodynamic device located on the under-
side of a road or racing car as depicted in Fig-4. It has to
speed up the airflow entering the device (lowering pressure),
and then slowing it down (increasing pressure) by means of
the venture effect. While doing this it also has to make sure
that flow separation does not occur, resulting in stalled and
turbulent airflow-in other words a lot of drag. This is

achieved by a gradual gradient and volumetric increase
along the body of the diffuser. Since it has minimal drag
penalties compared to other aerodynamic devices, it is very
efficient for down force generation.

The first study investigating diffuser flows in a generic
model was conducted by George [13]and George & Donis
[14]. They used a diffuser angle of 10o
over a range of h/L
values where h is ground clearance and L is vehicle’s length.
They found that downforce will increase with reduced
clearance, aneffect that will peak when h/L goes below 0.05.
Ruhrmann et al.[15] then studied the variations in
downforce and drag coefficient over diffuser angles ranging
from 5 to 20 deg with moving ground and found that the
diffuser over an angle of 14o
stalled and created less
downforce. Ahmed et al.[16] in their diffuser at 3.45o
had to
halve their original ground clearance to gain a lot of
downforce which came to around 0.094 as it coefficient of
lift. Marklund [17] tested on a sedan and wagon of a same
manufacturer for a range of diffuser angles from 0 to 14o
.
He concluded that lift forces were significantly reduced and
the reduction was larger in case of sedan. Optimum diffuser
angle for sedan was 8o
and 5o
in case of wagon.
2.3 Vortex Generator
The main function of vortex generator is to delay the air
flow separation. They are small and fit inside the boundary
layer, shaped like triangular fins (See Fig-5) and are
especially effective in speeds in excess of 100 kmph.

Katz [18] published a work regarding the incorporation of
vortex generators onto the ends of the underbody of an
Indycar. In it he graphically represented his data from Katz
et al [19,20] which shows that the lift of the car was very
low at low ride heights about and the drag coefficient was
reduced from 0.2 to 0.18 with addition of vortex generators.
Flow visualizations indicate that with reduced ground
clearance the vortex strength increases and the vortices
untangle and get closer to thevehicle’s surface increasing
suction force. Ahmed et al. [16] designed a vortex generator
to be installed on the roof and it reduced the drag coefficient
from 0.41 to 0.39 which shows its massive advantage at
high speeds. Kumar et al. [21] designed vortex generators
for sedan and hatchback and concluded with similar gains in
drag coefficient of around 0.009 over conventional model.
2.4 Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes Equation
The Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS)
are used to predict the fluid flow using a time averaged
formulation. An instantaneous quantity is decomposed into
its time averaged and fluctuating quantities. This concept is
known as Reynolds decomposition It helps in simulating
turbulent flows. Krajnovi et al. [22] conducted
investigations on 25o
Ahmed body using Large Eddy
Simulations (LES) at low Reynolds number (2×105
) and
compared it with experimental data of Lienhart et al.[23]
which showed that the LES was giving very satisfactory
results. Kapadia et al. [24] also performed unsteady
simulations on the model using the Re-Normalization Group
(RNG) k-ε turbulence model and concluded that it
overpredicts the drag coefficient which was undesirable.
This gave way to Lanfrit[25] to say with certainty that
RANS was suitable for aerodynamic analyses over LES and
DES inspite of them being superior in performance because
of lesser simulation time needed in RANS.
CONCLUSION
It can be concluded after going through all the previous
research carried out that CFD is still in its nascent stages and
it cannot be completely relied upon for current design
requirements. It needs to be used in tandem with
experimental and numerical approaches so as to ascertain
our calculations and to ideally predict the flow pattern and
the losses being generated. But CFD has its own advantages
in it being very easy to post process and in the long run
much quicker to work with. Further research is needed for
passive devices in commercial vehicles. There are still
uncertainties surrounding the design and the dimensions are
still unattributed to various models. Also work needs to be
done on reducing the aerodynamic noises which might
enhance the quality of ride for the passenger.
