Save Craigie Hall, an early Charles Rennie Mackintosh Masterpiece
Craigie Hall was in 1978 included in the Secretary of State’s Listed Buildings of Special
Architectural or Historic Interest of Category A. (This is the highest grading and notes a building
of national or international significance).
This was in recognition not only of the fine qualities of the exterior of this very substantial
Victorian villa, but also of the superb interiors, remodelled in places by the internationally
celebrated Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The building represents what is for Glasgow a unique
example of its kind, namely a splendid late Victorian house built for a wealthy entrepreneur,
altered and updated over the years using the very best materials and the most prestigious architects
available at the time, resulting in a building in late 19th Century classical style with interiors of the
highest standard possible.
The
charming face carved into the fitted armchair in the corner is an example of the designs of
Mackintosh and his group at the Glasgow School of Art during the early 1890’s.
The curious bird-like forms which almost seem to have alighted on top of the book cases are
one of the earliest examples of a motif which was to reappear many times in Mackintosh’s
work. The bay windowed cupboards set into the face of the shelving appear later in the south
face of Mackintosh’s masterwork, the Glasgow School of Art. But, the overall design retains
a Victorian solidity that testifies both to Mackintosh’s youth and to the guiding hand of John
Keppie who would have supervised his work.
Mackintosh appears to have been responsible for the design.
The large white fireplace and overmantel at the end of the room would therefore have been
detailed in part by Mackintosh. It is a very similar design to the piece that he detailed for
the Smoking Room at the Glasgow Art Club in 1892, the principal difference being that,
at Craigie Hall, the fireplace is and always has been white. This scheme of decoration
(promoted in 1873 by Mary Howeis) was a means of delineating the more feminine domain
of the house in contrast with the more formal and masculine decoration of the remainder.
In 1897, four years after his initial involvement at Craigie Hall, Mackintosh returned in a
more independent role to add the organ case to the Music Room. In the previous year he
had won the competition to design the new Glasgow School of Art. We can assume that
Thomas Mason had appreciated and enjoyed the ‘unusual’ elements in the 1893 work and
Mackintosh’s competition success may have been the spur for him to develop his association
with this up and coming designer. If so, he possibly got more than he bargained for!
At the opposite end of the room is a fireplace with an overmantel designed by Mackintosh
displaying charming carved decorative pieces reminiscent of the work of Aubrey Beardsley.
The organ case is perhaps Mackintosh’s most significant piece of interior work prior to
1900. It is his only surviving musical instrument.

The First Photograph is a one-of-a-kind permanent positive-image process, secured upon the surface of a pewter plate in 1826. As such, the process did not provide for a transparent negative or for multiple positive printings on paper as later photographic processes did and continue to do today. Among the special qualities of this heliograph is the very fact that Joseph Nicéphore Niépce could only produce a singular photograph with any exposure he made. Thus, the object on view is the unique original; the creator could make no more duplicates of it.
One hundred and fifty years ago [Summer 1826] Joseph Nicéphore Niépce succeeded in obtaining a camera picture on a polished pewter plate, sensitized with bitumen of Judea. This material has the unusual property of hardening in light (not blackening like silver salts) but its light sensitivity is small. Niépce needed 8-10 h[ours] exposure in sunshine. He named his invention "heliography." After dissolving the unexposed parts of the picture in oil of turpentine and rinsing the plate, there remained, without the need for any other fixing, a permanent bitumen image of the light drawing, the shadows being indicated by the bare pewter plate. To avoid a lateral reversal of the view, Niépce had employed a prism in front of his achromatic lens. He had obtained both components from the Parisian optician [Charles] Chevalier when he purchased his first professional camera in January that year. After using glass, lithographic stone and zinc for previous experiments, he had ordered the pewterplates in May 1826.

Rosa Bonheur was one of the most renowned animal painters in history. Her earliest training was received from her father, a minor landscape painter, who encouraged her interest in art in general and in animals as her exclusive subject. He allowed her to keep a veritable menagerie in their home, including a sheep that is reported to have lived on the balcony of their sixth-floor Parisian apartment.
Bonheur's unconventional lifestyle contributed to the myth that surrounded her during her lifetime. She smoked cigarettes in public, rode astride, and wore her hair short. To study the anatomy of animals, Bonheur visited the slaughterhouse; for this work, she favored men's attire and was required to obtain an official authorization from the police to dress in trousers and a smock. Because of this recognition from official sources, she was then awarded a commission from the French government to produce a painting on the subject of plowing. Exhibited in the Salon of 1849, it firmly established her career in France.

The artist was praised by Napoleon III and Delacroix for her very realistic, yet passionate, studies of animals. This was a sensation at the 1853 Salon. It was reworked until 1855 and then it toured England and the U.S. for three years. She sold the painting and its reproduction rights. When an engraving was made of the work, it made the owner of the painting a lot of money since many people bought inexpensive reproductions of it. Her art, as did most Academic art, reached a broad audience through the mass medium of the print.

The very first photograph ever taken. Niepce used a mixture of natural, light-sensitive elements on a piece of pewter placed in a camera obscura and left it to daylight exposure. It rendered this image called a heliograph because it was exposed to the sun. Helio = sun, graph = writing, in other words, “sun writing.” Photo = light, thus photography is “light writing.”
Even though this image is blurry and hazy, we can still see the rooftops, trees, and sky.

In 1839, Louis Daguerre patented his process of fixing images on a copper plate called a daguerreotype. It is the earliest form of creating portraits. These portraits were placed under glass, framed and placed in a hinged box for the owner to cherish. Daguerreotypes are one-of-a-kind and cannot be duplicated. The image rendered in this fashion was extremely crisp and detailed. Tt came in different sizes from very small (2” x 2 1/2”) to what we would consider to be a normal sized picture for a portrait, (6 1/2” x 8 1/2”).

Dada photography
Laszlo Moholy-Nagy was born in Hungary and grew up in poverty after his father abandoned the family. He studied law but his studies were interrupted when he was drafted to serve in World War I, where he began drawing. After the war, he decided to become a painter and experimented with Dadaist compositions. In 1920, he moved to Berlin where he met his first wife Lucia, also a photographer, and began experimenting with photograms. In 1923, he was invited to teach at the Bauhaus and later made avant-garde films. From 1937-1947, he dedicated himself to teaching photography and film at the New Bauhaus in Chicago until his death from leukemia in 1946.

Robert smithson
Robert Smithson was an American artist famous for his land art works. His most famous work was Spiral Jetty, a 1,500 foot long spiral shaped jetty extending into Utah's Great Salt Lake constructed from rocks, earth, salt and algae. Smithson developed the concepts of "sites" and "non-sites" where a site was an outdoor artwork and a non-site could be displayed indoors, such as photographs from the outdoor site alongside materials from that location. He was interested in entropy, maps and aerial photos as ways to document sites.

- 35. Gertrude Kasebier As Kasebier’s portraiture came more into the light of the art world, she soon sought a friendship with Alfred Stieglitz. Near the turn of century, Kasebier contacted Stieglitz: to further he success by mingling with the art photographers, to further her knowledge and to give herself news directions in her life. The two befriended quickly. They agreed that photography was a form of artistic expression and worked with similar processes in order to achieve an artistic photographic print. Within a short period of time, Stieglitz was promoting Kasebier’s work through his publication, Camera Notes, and organizing solo exhibitions of her work, one of which was the Camera Club of New York, which Kasebier soon became a member. • The most important and now historic exhibit of this period was the first Philadelphia Photographic Salon of 1898. Of the 1200 entries, only 259 were selected. Ten of Kasebier’s images were chosen to exhibit; this extremely high honor placed her in the ranks of Stieglitz and other contemporaries. • The judges of the exhibit, such as William Merritt Chase stated that Kasebier’s work was as fine as anything that VanDyck has ever done. Charles H. Caffin was taken by Kasebier’s individuality…the force and distinctiveness of her style. The following year, Kasebier was a judge on the Philadelphia Photographic Salon. About that same time, her print The Manger sold for $100, which was the most paid for a photograph at that time. Kasebier began to socialize with F. Holland Day, Clarence White and became one of photography’s most influential photographers due to her unique style and consistently good work.
