Working with a leading heart surgeon,
at left is a surgical instrument designed
by CES, enabling minimally invasive
repair of heart mitral valves. Note the
extremely compact size – the barrel is
only 9mm in diameter.

The entire case was composed of
plastic components fabricated by a
Rapid Prototyping process called
Selective Laser Sintering (SLS).
Strong functional components can
now be obtained by SLS directly from
CAD files, with no molds or tooling
required.
Additionally, SLS can produce
components with internal channels
and other features unproducible by
other methods.
