This lecture is about cervical cancer or cancer of the cervix. This malignancy is very common among women in the Philippines. Treatments may consist of radiation, surgery, chemotherapy or a combination modality. Prevention may be achieved by vaccination.

Occur in midlife
Most cases found in women < 50 y/o

- human papilloma virus (HPV)
- transmitted sexually

condition:10- 15 years
cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN 1, 2, 3)
squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL 1, 2, 3)

40. COLPOSCOPY
- for abnormal Pap smear, suspicious cervix, high
risk patient
- magnify cervix up to 25X
- solution is applied; abnormal areas turn white,
characteristic changes

if (+) cancer: treat according to stage and medical
status of patient:
treatment of choice : radiotherapy

• takes 6 to 7 weeks
• often given with a drug called cisplatin.
