A PG certificate allows general viewing but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. While unaccompanied children of any age may watch, the film should not disturb children aged 8 or older. A PG rating permits more serious themes like crime or racism if not condoned, as well as mild language, natural nudity without sexual context, implied sexual activity that is discreet and infrequent, and moderate non-detailed violence justified by its setting. The group chose a PG rating over a U since a U is aimed at very young children, and they wanted to include comedy or sarcasm that may be confusing for children aged 4-5.

A PG CERTIFICATE

2. What does PG stand for?
PG is an abbreviation for “Parental Guidance” and was modelled after
the PG rating in the US. The change in name from “A” to “PG”
emphasized that the British Board of Film Censors wished to place
responsibility in the hands of parents in determining what their
children should be allowed to see, though they did not make it a
requirement that parents should also attend.
3. What is a PG certificate?
A PG certificate allows general viewing, but some scenes may be
unsuitable for young children. However, unaccompanied children of
any age may watch. A 'PG' film should not disturb a child aged around
eight or older but parents are advised to consider whether the content
may upset much younger or more sensitive children.
4. Bounds of the PG certificate
The BBFC permits the following within the bounds of the PG certificate:
• Theme: More serious issues may be featured, e.g crime, domestic violence, racism
(providing nothing in their treatment condones them).
• Language: Mild bad language only.
• Nudity: Natural nudity, with no sexual context.
• Sex: Sexual activity may be implied, but should be discreet and infrequent. Mild sexual
references and innuendo only.
• Violence: Moderate violence, without detail, may be allowed - if justified by its setting
(eg historic, comedy or fantasy).
• Imitable techniques: No glamorization of realistic, contemporary weapons. No detail of
fighting or other dangerous techniques.
• Horror: Frightening sequences should not be prolonged or intense. Fantasy settings may
be a mitigating factor.
• Drugs: No references to illegal drugs or drug use unless entirely harmless.
5. Why did we choose a PG certificate over a U
certificate?
Even though a PG certificate means all ages are able to watch, we
agreed this certificate was more appropriate over a U certificate as a U
is aimed more towards very young children. We decided the storyline
may be confusing for young children aged around 4-5 as we plan to add
a sense of comedy or sarcasm which may be difficult to understand.
