Cephalosporin is a class of β-lactam antibiotic that is closely related to penicillin both structurally and functionally. It inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by interfering with transpeptidase. Cephalosporin is classified into five generations based on their spectrum of activity and resistance. It is administered orally or parentally, excreted renally, and has a plasma half-life of 30-90 minutes. Some potential adverse effects include hypersensitivity, nephrotoxicity, thrombophlebitis, superinfections, and diarrhea.
