7. What is a
"CAUSE"?A cause is something that makes
something else happen.
Out of two events, it is the event that
happens first.
To determine the cause, ask the
question “Why did it happen?"

8. An effect is what happens as a result
of the cause.
Of two related events, it’s the one that
happens second or last.
To determine the effect, ask the question
“What happened?"

"EFFECT"?

• Sally studied hard for a test.
• Sally earned an A on her test.
• Joe became really tired.
• Joe went to sleep early.

At times connecting words are used to
link the cause and effect.

11. Because, since and as introduce a
cause and so introduces an effect or
result.
The physically-disabled worked hard to earn a
living because they have to learn self reliance.
The meeting was postponed since the resource
speaker was absent.
Plans for a new project were hatched in secret
as it was too early to announce them.
Examples:

12. Therefore, consequently, as a
result, introduce an effect.
Examples:
 A specialist helped put up the
cooperative; therefore, it succeeded.
The protesters turned violent
consequently they were hurt.

13. Because of and due to are prepositions
used to introduce a cause. They come as
a noun phrase.
Examples:
Because of government neglect, many
self-help projects for the physically-
disabled are shelved indefinitely.
Due to red tape, many ordinances are
not implemented on time.

14. • Alvin missed the bus. He woke up late.
• My brother does not sleep very well. The
neighborhood is noisy.
• Cities have grown very large. Factory jobs
attracted people.
• She needs a job. She needs to be able to
support herself.
