We would like to extend a special gratitude to the Casio India CSR
Team for their efforts in carrying forward the music learning initiative
among children and bringing a change in their lives.
A special mention, to the implementation partner for effectively
executing the project within the target community.
Lastly we are grateful to the schools and students for participating in
the project making it successful.
Project Music-keyboard learning classes for the socially & economically weak and
specially-abled students was started with an aim to introduce music as a crucial
component in a child’s life. Music has always been taken as a subject which is essential
to make a child confident. However in India many schools are not equipped with the right
infrastructure to support music as a regular learning course for students. This is prominent
in schools that are enrolling students from poor background.
Hence carrying forward the group’s philosophy of “Creativity and Contribution” for past two
years Casio India is undertaking music education programme in schools. The project
engages specially-abled and underprivileged students at the school level. Through a proper
school time-table the children are given instruments to learn music with the help of
especially appointed teachers for this project.
The first year the focus was to teach children the basics of learning music and how to play
keyboard instruments. While in the second year the focus was to teach them the advance
level of music and instruments playing. The major change we could witness through the
project was that now children are able to face the stage and end the stage fright by
participating in various competitions. This has been crucial for the project as through music
learning we have been able to build communication skills, create confidence and develop
rational thinking values among children.
We are thankful to our implementation partners, project teachers, school principals &
authorities and most importantly to students for making this project a success.

Music is the first form of phonetics sound that is taught to a child. The basic of language speaking starts with a
sound and a particular way of communicating a particular sound. Once a child is familiar with a particular sound
they start using that knowledge of sounds to read and build words. Hence music is the first form of communication
which a child learns.
Early childhood music classes provide an opportunity and strengthen a child ability to discriminate between
similarities and differences in sound. So, while children gain musical skills in class, they also gain phonological
awareness and reading development. Not only as a form of communication, music is also used to regulate a
person thoughts, feelings and actions. This can be largely seen in teaching curriculum where music based poems,
stories and simple instruments are used to teach the basic of any language and bring decorum in a child’s life.
However in institutes where music as a curriculum is missing it becomes difficult to grow and excel academically.
This can be largely seen in our government school education system where children perform relatively poor in
comparison to their counterparts.

What music
A class 9th
student of S.B.M school, just like any of his friends got enrolled in CASIO keyboard music classes without
knowing what his experience would be. Initially, he thought he would get a free time from regular classes. But with
time his participation and interest increased so much that at home he started practicing keyboard on mobile app.
Harshbardhan, his music teacher states that Barun was a student who had no knowledge about music and
keyboard.
Through these classes Barun has been able to develop interest in music which was unknown to him. Earlier his
interest was just limited to attend a free class but gradually with technical and practical session on keyboard he
started liking keyboard playing. Currently Barun is using Casio 860 IN for practicing music lessons at home. This
liking towards keyboard playing has moved in a positive direction where now he wants to enhance his knowledge.
The opportunity to play different tones and songs has created passion in him that he continues his practice through
a mobile app and keyboard. This assists him learning better and wherever he is facing problem he comes to school
discuss with Harshbardhan and practice it in order to correct his techniques.
“Barun for learning music is using both technology and practical experience on keyboard
to enhance his knowledge of music playing & creating new sounds and his developing
the skill of craftsmanship”
‘Through keyboard learning Anirudh is able to build an emotional connect with things
around his life. Through music he has learnt to express himself and become
confident in his small way’
Anirudh a class 8th
student from Janta Adarsh Andh Vidalaya . He is 13 years old and lives with his parents in Delhi.
Since birth he had sight problems and this worsened till the time he reached primary level of schooling, at which he
lost the ability to see shapes, objects and colours.
Anirudh attended mainstream school and due to his physical ability he did not have many friends. As a child he
isolated himself from others his own age and preferred to stay at home with his parents than go out with friends. This
was further encouraged by his parents who did everything for him at home. He attributes this to the Indian culture
where people with disabilities are over-protected by their families. After discussion his family got them enrolled him
in Janta Adarsh Andh Vidalaya, a blind boarding school, so that he can get education and be with children who are
like them.
In the school they are given opportunity to learn and write and also participate in extra-curricular activities. In March,
his class teacher enrolled them in CASIO keyboard music classes. Like rest of the students keyboard was new to him.
Initially, Harshbardhan, music teacher states that teaching keyboard was difficult but gradually he started listening
and learning. With an inner power to learn fast he is learning the concepts of playing keyboards. He is weak in
playing the left hand arpeggios as well as power chords. Right now he is playing the basic chords and applying
properly in songs.

A class 7th
student at St Paul Diocesan School, Krish was one of the first students to get enrolled in the Casio
keyboard classes. With time, he got so interested in learning that he became one of the best performing children in
class. In the second year also, Krish has enrolled himself in the music classes and is regularly attending classes so
as to enhance his existing knowledge and further expand his horizon on music and instrument playing.
From the classes, he has learnt to play national anthem, motivational songs and Christmas carols and many more
Bollywood songs. He had been so much interested that his parents bought for him Casio CTK -6300 in for him to
practice at home. Now when the keyboard is at home Krish’s sister is also learning instrument playing. Krish parents
states that keyboard playing is like a stress relieving mode for him where whenever he is not interested in studying
or playing with friends he spends time by playing keyboard.
Music classes has not only helped him develop an additional skill but gradually his performance in school has also
improved where his marks in Mathematics and Science has increased. Harshbardhan, music teacher states that
Krish is one of those boys who enters on time, attends the class attentively and participates at school events.
“Class teacher states that with introduction of music classes students like Krish have
developed keen interest towards additional skills which have increased their overall
reasoning skills.”
“Rajat has attained a skill of spatial intelligence where he has learnt the art of
playing music in respect to any situation. He is increasing his knowledge bank by
participating at various events.”
Rajat is an active student of class 10th
at Institution for Blind. Since beginning Rajat has a keen interest towards
music as he is equipped with the knowledge of sargams and rhythms. He was keen to learn and play musical
instrument and seeing his interest towards music the school provided him with a harmonium so that he can take
forward his interest and practice his abilities towards music.
His school teachers states that despite being visually abled Rajat has always been motivated towards learning new
things and aims to become self-reliable in future and Casio classes has given him a direction to attain
self-sustainability.
Through Casio keyboards Rajat has been able to enhance his knowledge and moreover with the presence of music
teacher at school level he has been able to learn and relate music with objects, situations and experiences. Moreover
the presence the keyboards at the school level helps him to practice more at any point of the day.
Earlier his learning was towards knowledge gaining but gradually it has grown towards income based. As now days
he has started participating at social events as a keyboard player that is marking his journey to become
economically independent and reliable.

At Lady Florence Public School Khushi is a class 6th
child who has been participating at the Casio music keyboard
classes. She undertakes the classes as an extra period where children can come to the class and use keyboard to
sing and dance. As a child Khushi is good at singing and whenever there is an event at school she is one of the main
performers. Khushi states that once in a week she goes to the classes to practice and the music teacher teaches her
how to improve on her vocals matching the pace and volume of an instrument. Earlier when there was no instrument
at school she with her group used to practice for school events without any background music.
But with the coming of keyboards she is able to clearly understand the ragas and rhythms and these are helpful for
her to comprehend the singing pattern and flow of a song. Moreover the school events have become more impactful
because now whenever group is performing a song they are using keyboards which create a lasting impression.
Whenever any school event or competition is about to happen then the music teacher comes on everyday basis and
makes the children undergo a practice session so that they can perform well at the event or competition. Under the
classes she has learnt singing of new songs and has participated at various inter school competitions
“Khushi has started identifying different patterns and sequences that are involved while
singing a song. She is happy that she knows various tempos and rhythms used during
singing.”
“His parents are happy as now Sahil understands the language of music is applies his
logic and reasoning season while keyboard instrument.”
One year ago Sahil came to know that Casio keyboard classes are starting at his school, Shanti Niketan and his class
has been enrolled for the program. Before the initiation of classes Sahil had no idea about music and how to play a
musical instrument. This was for the first time that he was about to learn music and instrument playing.
During first few weeks of the classes Sahil was taught the basic of music i.e. ‘Ragas’ and ‘Sargams’ but in the few
course of time he started to learn what does keyboard comprises of and the methodology of playing the instrument.
On weekly basis, the teacher taught in class how to use keyboard keys and play the instrument from single hand.
Initially simple songs such as happy birthday, devotional, and patriotic songs were taught however with time Sahil was
taught to use both his hands on keyboards.
Sahil states that earlier keyboard playing and understanding the language of music instrument was difficult. But now
when the music teacher asks to play a particular song he is able to comprehend the scales better.
Today he understands music as a language and knows how to play different tempos, scales with their chords &
alankars. When the music teacher asks him to play different sharps he knows how to use his fingers on diverse keys.

Technical
Blackboard is used to teach sargam with practical session on the keyboard. As there are 24 Basic chords in
keyboard so it was planned them to learn the chords at the same time while playing the C scales.
40-50 students from each school were shortlisted as per their playing techniques and vocals. Prepared the
students to learn only single family basic chords within a week so that they can easily learn and memorize them
both mentally as well as practically.
Planned that on each keyboard 2 students will play accordingly at a time, so that more number of students are
covered. Also, before every class revision of 10 minutes is conducted for students to revise about the previous
class.
Teaching visually impaired students is difficult in comparison to sighted students hence, introduced numbering
system were the students count, identify and play notes For e.g. If students want to play ‘C#’ note then they were
asked to count the notes from 1 to 16 as ‘C’ note is located at the 16th note.
After 16th
count they are asked to play the whole note with new numbering again. Also, for notes like sharp (#) and
flat (b) in respect to C note then students are asked to count gain till 15 & just above C note the C# is played.

A special mention, to the implementation partner for effectively executing the project within the target community. Lastly we are grateful to the schools and students for participating in the project making it successful.
  • 5. Project Music-keyboard learning classes for the socially & economically weak and specially-abled students was started with an aim to introduce music as a crucial component in a child’s life. Music has always been taken as a subject which is essential to make a child confident. However in India many schools are not equipped with the right infrastructure to support music as a regular learning course for students. This is prominent in schools that are enrolling students from poor background. Hence carrying forward the group’s philosophy of “Creativity and Contribution” for past two years Casio India is undertaking music education programme in schools. The project engages specially-abled and underprivileged students at the school level. Through a proper school time-table the children are given instruments to learn music with the help of especially appointed teachers for this project. The first year the focus was to teach children the basics of learning music and how to play keyboard instruments. While in the second year the focus was to teach them the advance level of music and instruments playing. The major change we could witness through the project was that now children are able to face the stage and end the stage fright by participating in various competitions. This has been crucial for the project as through music learning we have been able to build communication skills, create confidence and develop rational thinking values among children. We are thankful to our implementation partners, project teachers, school principals & authorities and most importantly to students for making this project a success. • 10. Music is the first form of phonetics sound that is taught to a child. The basic of language speaking starts with a sound and a particular way of communicating a particular sound. Once a child is familiar with a particular sound they start using that knowledge of sounds to read and build words. Hence music is the first form of communication which a child learns. Early childhood music classes provide an opportunity and strengthen a child ability to discriminate between similarities and differences in sound. So, while children gain musical skills in class, they also gain phonological awareness and reading development. Not only as a form of communication, music is also used to regulate a person thoughts, feelings and actions. This can be largely seen in teaching curriculum where music based poems, stories and simple instruments are used to teach the basic of any language and bring decorum in a child’s life. However in institutes where music as a curriculum is missing it becomes difficult to grow and excel academically. This can be largely seen in our government school education system where children perform relatively poor in comparison to their counterparts. matters Early childhood music classes teach children to identify and discriminate between sounds and focus on sounds that matter most.

  • 12. A class 9th student of S.B.M school, just like any of his friends got enrolled in CASIO keyboard music classes without knowing what his experience would be. Initially, he thought he would get a free time from regular classes. But with time his participation and interest increased so much that at home he started practicing keyboard on mobile app. Harshbardhan, his music teacher states that Barun was a student who had no knowledge about music and keyboard. Through these classes Barun has been able to develop interest in music which was unknown to him. Earlier his interest was just limited to attend a free class but gradually with technical and practical session on keyboard he started liking keyboard playing. Currently Barun is using Casio 860 IN for practicing music lessons at home. This liking towards keyboard playing has moved in a positive direction where now he wants to enhance his knowledge. The opportunity to play different tones and songs has created passion in him that he continues his practice through a mobile app and keyboard. This assists him learning better and wherever he is facing problem he comes to school discuss with Harshbardhan and practice it in order to correct his techniques. “Barun for learning music is using both technology and practical experience on keyboard to enhance his knowledge of music playing & creating new sounds and his developing the skill of craftsmanship” ‘Through keyboard learning Anirudh is able to build an emotional connect with things around his life. Through music he has learnt to express himself and become confident in his small way’ Anirudh a class 8th student from Janta Adarsh Andh Vidalaya . He is 13 years old and lives with his parents in Delhi. Since birth he had sight problems and this worsened till the time he reached primary level of schooling, at which he lost the ability to see shapes, objects and colours. Anirudh attended mainstream school and due to his physical ability he did not have many friends. As a child he isolated himself from others his own age and preferred to stay at home with his parents than go out with friends. This was further encouraged by his parents who did everything for him at home. He attributes this to the Indian culture where people with disabilities are over-protected by their families. After discussion his family got them enrolled him in Janta Adarsh Andh Vidalaya, a blind boarding school, so that he can get education and be with children who are like them. In the school they are given opportunity to learn and write and also participate in extra-curricular activities. In March, his class teacher enrolled them in CASIO keyboard music classes. Like rest of the students keyboard was new to him. Initially, Harshbardhan, music teacher states that teaching keyboard was difficult but gradually he started listening and learning. With an inner power to learn fast he is learning the concepts of playing keyboards. He is weak in playing the left hand arpeggios as well as power chords. Right now he is playing the basic chords and applying properly in songs. Barun Kumar Anirudh Project Music Annual Report 2016-17 12
  • 13. A class 7th student at St Paul Diocesan School, Krish was one of the first students to get enrolled in the Casio keyboard classes. With time, he got so interested in learning that he became one of the best performing children in class. In the second year also, Krish has enrolled himself in the music classes and is regularly attending classes so as to enhance his existing knowledge and further expand his horizon on music and instrument playing. From the classes, he has learnt to play national anthem, motivational songs and Christmas carols and many more Bollywood songs. Krish parents states that keyboard playing is like a stress relieving mode for him where whenever he is not interested in studying or playing with friends he spends time by playing keyboard. Music classes has not only helped him develop an additional skill but gradually his performance in school has also improved where his marks in Mathematics and Science has increased. Harshbardhan, music teacher states that Krish is one of those boys who enters on time, attends the class attentively and participates at school events. “Class teacher states that with introduction of music classes students like Krish have developed keen interest towards additional skills which have increased their overall reasoning skills.” “Rajat has attained a skill of spatial intelligence where he has learnt the art of playing music in respect to any situation. He is increasing his knowledge bank by participating at various events.” Rajat is an active student of class 10th at Institution for Blind. Since beginning Rajat has a keen interest towards music as he is equipped with the knowledge of sargams and rhythms. • 14. At Lady Florence Public School Khushi is a class 6th child who has been participating at the Casio music keyboard classes. She undertakes the classes as an extra period where children can come to the class and use keyboard to sing and dance. As a child Khushi is good at singing and whenever there is an event at school she is one of the main performers. Khushi states that once in a week she goes to the classes to practice and the music teacher teaches her how to improve on her vocals matching the pace and volume of an instrument. Earlier when there was no instrument at school she with her group used to practice for school events without any background music. But with the coming of keyboards she is able to clearly understand the ragas and rhythms and these are helpful for her to comprehend the singing pattern and flow of a song. Moreover the school events have become more impactful because now whenever group is performing a song they are using keyboards which create a lasting impression. Whenever any school event or competition is about to happen then the music teacher comes on everyday basis and makes the children undergo a practice session so that they can perform well at the event or competition. Under the classes she has learnt singing of new songs and has participated at various inter school competitions “Khushi has started identifying different patterns and sequences that are involved while singing a song. She is happy that she knows various tempos and rhythms used during singing.” “His parents are happy as now Sahil understands the language of music is applies his logic and reasoning season while keyboard instrument.” One year ago Sahil came to know that Casio keyboard classes are starting at his school, Shanti Niketan and his class has been enrolled for the program. Before the initiation of classes Sahil had no idea about music and how to play a musical instrument. This was for the first time that he was about to learn music and instrument playing. During first few weeks of the classes Sahil was taught the basic of music i.e. ‘Ragas’ and ‘Sargams’ but in the few course of time he started to learn what does keyboard comprises of and the methodology of playing the instrument. On weekly basis, the teacher taught in class how to use keyboard keys and play the instrument from single hand. Initially simple songs such as happy birthday, devotional, and patriotic songs were taught however with time Sahil was taught to use both his hands on keyboards. Sahil states that earlier keyboard playing and understanding the language of music instrument was difficult. But now when the music teacher asks to play a particular song he is able to comprehend the scales better. Today he understands music as a language and knows how to play different tempos, scales with their chords & alankars. When the music teacher asks him to play different sharps he knows how to use his fingers on diverse keys. Khushi Sahil Sachdeva Project Music Annual Report 2016-17 14

Practicing of scales of C with their Chords, and the different types of alankars in C scales. Preparing them for events for their school functions as well as Independence Day and Republic Day. Students are doing vocals as well keyboard simultaneously. 15 Covered Practical C Major - Right hand Technical Blackboard is used to teach sargam with practical session on the keyboard. As there are 24 Basic chords in keyboard so it was planned them to learn the chords at the same time while playing the C scales. 40-50 students from each school were shortlisted as per their playing techniques and vocals. Prepared the students to learn only single family basic chords within a week so that they can easily learn and memorize them both mentally as well as practically. Planned that on each keyboard 2 students will play accordingly at a time, so that more number of students are covered. Also, before every class revision of 10 minutes is conducted for students to revise about the previous class. Teaching visually impaired students is difficult in comparison to sighted students hence, introduced numbering system were the students count, identify and play notes For e.g. If students want to play ‘C#’ note then they were asked to count the notes from 1 to 16 as ‘C’ note is located at the 16th note. After 16th count they are asked to play the whole note with new numbering again. Also, for notes like sharp (#) and flat (b) in respect to C note then students are asked to count gain till 15 & just above C note the C# is played.
