Culture Untapped: inspirational content & fresh ideas for your gamesMilena Popova
Games are often brain- and resource-intensive projects. Why not save precious time and exploit untapped, powerful sources of inspiration and material? Discover Europeana, a digital platform for culture giving access to over 43 million records of great thematic and media variety, coming from 3300 heritage organizations and available in 31 languages.
This presentation shows how this huge database can help game creation process with fresh ideas and “building blocks” of diverse and high-quality digital content. Game developers will look at inspiring content picks, learn more about technical tools and services to access and use the digital material and see some real-life examples of creative re-use of cultural content in educational and tourism games.

The Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums (GLAM) sector deals with complex and varied data. Integrating that data, especially across institutions, has always been a challenge. Semantic data integration is the best approach to deal with such challenges. Linked Open Data (LOD) enable large-scale Digital Humanities (DH) research, collaboration and aggregation, allowing DH researchers to make connections between (and make sense of) the multitude of digitized Cultural Heritage (CH) available on the web. An upsurge of interest in semtech and LOD has swept the CH and DH communities. An active Linked Open Data for Libraries, Archives and Museums (LODLAM) community exists, CH data is published as LOD, and international collaborations have emerged. The value of LOD is especially high in the GLAM sector, since culture by its very nature is cross-border and interlinked. We present interesting LODLAM projects, datasets, and ontologies, as well as Ontotext's experience in this domain. An extended paper on these topics is also available. It has 77 pages, 67 figures, detailed info about CH content and XML standards, Wikidata and global authority control.

In 2018 the ‘Strategy for culture in the digital age’ was published by the Flemish minister of culture. The culture sector is exploring open data to improve access of their collections for diverse groups of users. PACKED has researched, developed and published data, tools and strategies using open source and open data as a lever for building a sustainable digital memory. Aside from sharing our projects, results and peeking at the new challenges that lie ahead, we provide a platform for two of our partners to showcase projects which were set up in collaboration with PACKED:
-The King Baudouin Foundation collaborated with PACKED in order to open up their collections on Wikimedia plaftorms

This presentation, created by Syed Faiz ul Hassan, explores the profound influence of media on public perception and behavior. It delves into the evolution of media from oral traditions to modern digital and social media platforms. Key topics include the role of media in information propagation, socialization, crisis awareness, globalization, and education. The presentation also examines media influence through agenda setting, propaganda, and manipulative techniques used by advertisers and marketers. Furthermore, it highlights the impact of surveillance enabled by media technologies on personal behavior and preferences. Through this comprehensive overview, the presentation aims to shed light on how media shapes collective consciousness and public opinion.
This presentation by Morris Kleiner (University of Minnesota), was made during the discussion “Competition and Regulation in Professions and Occupations” held at the Working Party No. 2 on Competition and Regulation on 10 June 2024. More papers and presentations on the topic can be found out at oe.cd/crps.

0x01 - Newton's Third Law: Static vs. Dynamic AbusersOWASP Beja
f you offer a service on the web, odds are that someone will abuse it. Be it an API, a SaaS, a PaaS, or even a static website, someone somewhere will try to figure out a way to use it to their own needs. In this talk we'll compare measures that are effective against static attackers and how to battle a dynamic attacker who adapts to your counter-measures.

8. Aggregation DNA
What is your mission as an aggregator?
A common mission of NA is:
• Give access to cultural heritage objects
• especially free access
• in high quality
• single point of access
• Promote resources and cultural heritage of their country
• To set up quality standards and create high quality data and metadata
15. Staff / capacity /
expertise
The masquerade ball Pesne, Antoine, National Digital Library, Final CC0
16. Staff
Key staff:
● Metadata & information
specialists
● IT operations & IT
developers
● 40% of developers are
outsourced
17. Expertise
Please describe what kind of support do you offer
Type of support:
• Technical
• general technical support
• infrastructure
• Data related
• metadata modelling
• data quality
26. The most common attempts to modules development (for all the modules
listed in the question: registration, Digital Asset Management, customer
relationship management:
Vocabulary Management, harvesting, mapping, Content Management
System, storage system, processing: enrichment, validation etc., search,
collection portal, external API) was in-house and/or open-source.
Even more operate the system in their own data centre.
Software used
27. Hardware
Varies between aggregators and they are usually adjusted size-wise to how
big the aggregator is. Some of the aggregators use a quite advanced setup
(with modern technologies) like Ceph, Hadoop, MongoDb clusters.
The overall impression is that NAs use SoTA technologies.
37. Metadata mapping
● Individual process (internal model, transformations, in-house tools,
developers involvement)
Our opinion:
● A key element in the aggregation workflow
● Needs a lot of attention when setting up an aggregator
38. Metadata processing
● Processing options
○ Enrichment
○ Normalisation
○ Validation
● Each option is done by almost half of NAs
● Usually NA does at least two of the options
● We could conclude that advanced metadata processing is done by
almost half of NAs
40. Cooperation with Europeana
All the respondents claim that Europeana is a part of their mission
● Promotion and dissemination of national resources
● Network building and exchange of experiences
● Help with content quality (standards, frameworks, etc.)
● NA was designated by authorities to cooperate with Europeana
● European integration
