Subject : Case study Nordea goes green with IT
Introduction
 Nordea its foundation in 1820
 Formal name: Nordea Bank AB
 Largest bank group in the Northern Europe.
 32,264 Total number of employees
 It has 1,400 branch offices,10 000 000 Total
number of customers.
Summary
Jonsson was appointed the green IT manager at Nordea .
Nordea has largest bank group in the Northern Europe.
This mean requires much air travel between branches.
Result travel makes a bout a third carbon dioxide emissions
Amount of money is spent on air travel.
Jonsson used IT to reduce air travel .
He put plan consists of two parts.
First : meeting room at Nordea branches.
Second : desktop and laptop with Web cameras to enable
video call. Now Nordea saves money and reduces its
environment impact.
1. What business, personal, and social costs are involved
when traveling by airplane between Copenhagen and
Helsinki?
 Business: Expensive for the company.
 Personal: Time consuming and energy for the person.
 Social: Frequent travelling means less time with family
and friends, and less time for oneself. It also cause
environmental pollution.
2. How can IT be both the culprit and the solution to
environmental problems?
 Solution to environmental problems: Creating
more technologies that can reduce travelling times.
As examples: video conferencing, teleconferencing,
and others.
 Culprit to environmental problems: IT can be a
culprit security purposes or break downs.
3. What are the arguments against corporate social
responsibility?
 These are the obstacles of IT going green, and the
idea of changing people's behavior and well
established practices. In general people do not like
change, because of the expected uncertainty.
4. Why should firms be engaged in making the world more
sustainable?
 Sustainable world mean stable minds. Firms are
there for the people. People work in these firms.
Therefore this can result to efficient output. For
example: In parallel to the World Sustainable
Energy Days, the Energies premise, an exhibition
and trade show dedicated to renewable energy
sources and energy efficiency, is held. It attracts
around 100,000 visitors and around 1,000
exhibiting companies.

  • 2. Introduction  Nordea its foundation in 1820  Formal name: Nordea Bank AB  Largest bank group in the Northern Europe.  32,264 Total number of employees  It has 1,400 branch offices,10 000 000 Total number of customers.
  • 3. Summary Jonsson was appointed the green IT manager at Nordea . Nordea has largest bank group in the Northern Europe. This mean requires much air travel between branches. Result travel makes a bout a third carbon dioxide emissions Amount of money is spent on air travel. Jonsson used IT to reduce air travel . He put plan consists of two parts. First : meeting room at Nordea branches. Second : desktop and laptop with Web cameras to enable video call. Now Nordea saves money and reduces its environment impact.

  • 5. 1. What business, personal, and social costs are involved when traveling by airplane between Copenhagen and Helsinki?  Business: Expensive for the company.  Personal: Time consuming and energy for the person.  Social: Frequent travelling means less time with family and friends, and less time for oneself. It also cause environmental pollution.
  • 6. 2. How can IT be both the culprit and the solution to environmental problems?  Solution to environmental problems: Creating more technologies that can reduce travelling times. As examples: video conferencing, teleconferencing, and others.  Culprit to environmental problems: IT can be a culprit security purposes or break downs.
  • 7. 3. What are the arguments against corporate social responsibility?  These are the obstacles of IT going green, and the idea of changing people's behavior and well established practices. In general people do not like change, because of the expected uncertainty.
  • 8. 4. Why should firms be engaged in making the world more sustainable?  Sustainable world mean stable minds. Firms are there for the people. People work in these firms. Therefore this can result to efficient output. For example: In parallel to the World Sustainable Energy Days, the Energies premise, an exhibition and trade show dedicated to renewable energy sources and energy efficiency, is held. It attracts around 100,000 visitors and around 1,000 exhibiting companies.
