Welcome!Johan LöfmarkI have the best job in the world as I specialize in helping companies to interact with customers in a digital contextI would like to share some thoughts and ideas of how information technology can be a driving force in creating a sustainable future.
To conclude: IT is the fantastic tool to work with sustainability outside the strict domain of the server room. And the most exciting thing with IT is that we do not have the traditional trade offs. Environment and Economy at the same time, enabled by information technology.For example the example with eInvoicing. Easier for the customer that don't miss the payment, don't have spend time on the boring task to insert OCR numbers, while at the same time we lower consumption of paper and the company saves money. The only thing missing is transparency, why not print on the invoice how much co2 you as a customer are saving when paying this invoice through your online bank, that would make us digital natives further accelerate innovations such as this.
Never before have so much information been available to us, and I promise that I will do my best to increase this by forcing my customers to open up their databases.With information we can understand consequences and make smarter decisions. Emissions from products are the first step towards consumer power.When I book a trip to Barcelona with a Boeing 737 I am told how much emissions this generates, together with the option to offset them. As well as we in the future will have sustainability tags on the products that we purchase, such as this shirt on the right side.A great example of this trend is Hans Rosling that brings up statistics from government agencies and organizations and makes it understandable, possible to analyze and draw conclusions. He recently sold his company Gapminder to Google so I am sure more exciting things will come.And its fun with information
Lets start with Gartner, the bible for us technology consultants. This is their hype cycle for emerging technologies showing the status of technologies predicted for mass market adoption.Green IT is truly hyped today, on top of the curve and we read about it in most reports, magazines, blogs and presentations. According to Gartner the attention will probably lower soon, but it is vital to realize that it is not a fad, but a vital part in sustainable business practice.
Because IT also change how people work with sustainability and environment
Almost 20 years ago we went out on the streets to promote sustainability and green ideas1988 was for example the year when the Green Party (Miljöpartiet) entered the Swedish governmentFor young people like me this is how the former generation promoted sustainability – my generation is very passionate about sustainability, but we express it in a very different way.
We don't go out to the streets anymore, we express our passion digitally through the tools we have been growing up with.Many parents say “don’t sit in front of your computer, go out and play with your friends”. But this is exactly what we are doing online nowadays as this is where we connect with people to share and promote our thinking, ideas and beliefs.This has also changed the focus. 20 years ago it was about environmental problems in Sweden. Today its more about curbing climate change and environmental threats on a global platform and scale. Young people are today active members in the global challenges.And they are now empowered with tools and methods to take action
My second point is that we must not forget what the I in IT stands for; information.It is a lot of talk about physical innovations and products, but I would like to claim that there are much more value is in services and information.
Because the new digital platforms offer great possibilities to find other people sharing the same causeWWF Earth Hour earlier this year (promoting people to turn off the lights during one hour) was for example a global campaign, especially driven and organized by digital communication.When was the last time the whole world came together for a common cause and collaborated across borders? The whole world participating.This was a major initiative, but smaller actions and campaigns are happening daily as we speak. Its easier than ever to mobilize people for a cause.
I have at Tieto been part of a team to develop a concept for an open conversation platform for sustainable energy, how to promote discussions and dialogues around sustainable energy.My own favorite part in the concept is: the word open. Everyone from anywhere on the globe, at all ages and backgrounds is invited to participate.Therefore a favorite part is around open innovation (or co-innovation).I used to live in India and with on average one hour electricity break every day I am very convinced that most innovations around energy (as well as sustainability) will emerge in or focus on the developing countries.Sustainability is a global cause, lets collaborate over continents, pollution has no borders, the end result benefits everyone. And lets therefore invite everyone to participate, share your ideas, maybe we can realize one of them.Digital is a great platform for develop ideas together and to identify solutions for the future.

At the highest level, cloud computing helps achieve economies of scale by centralising compute power and give access to everyone.At the CIO level, cloud computing helps shift the mindset to commoditise computing power, not servers, and therefore drive efficiencies via virtualization and greater utilization rates which allows systems to scale up or down due to load fluctuations. At the data center level, cloud computing’s drive towards consolidation paves the way for new standards for energy efficiency and intelligent buying.At the R&D level, cloud computing creates incentives for software engineers to code more efficient applications, as often their company will become the host for the applications and re-use will happen across many clouds.
Cloud Computing is:Cheap for collecting, storing and process dataTransparency: Price per unit in the knowledge society instead price per hour in the industrial societyNew patterns in the Open Society, will emerge as:Governments will start give away data for analysis Companies can now open own silo’s because it cheaperStructured silo’s like ERP, SCMUnstructured silo’s like IntranetsInternet has made information available for the massesSo crowd sourcing will work in practice
A lot of new services will emerge when all this data get’s unleashed and a lot of new companies will emerge with new solutions.Cloud services will be built on great new technologies at much cheaper price on top of existing systems, as the cloud computing changes the current business model option of software licensing and hardware purchase to a consumption based pricing, thus liberating societies so to say, like when Gutenberg invented the printingWe can now make more informed decisions since huge amount of data power is available for everyone, to do real analytics and everyone has access to it all.
Potential environmental benefits are much bigger by making informed sustainable decisions based on knowledge, than just the cloud computing and new datacenter savings.We can now ask ”what if” and ”which one”, that is the promise of Cloud Computing at it’s core.So the sky is the limit.
