The music video for Nina Sky's song "DayDreaming" tells a nonlinear narrative about a man having affairs with different women. It uses flashbacks and jumps between the relationships to contrast them and leave the audience wondering what truly happened. One woman portrayed breaks stereotypes by having a masculine appearance. The video also represents women as emotionally volatile and men as vulnerable. It utilizes common techniques like location shots and repetition to fit the R&B and hip-hop genres.
This is a brief, mostly visual treatment analysis for my group's music video for Weezer - Memories. The point of a treatment is to give a visual representation of the kind of graphics and shooting methods one would like in their own music video. We have just simply taken some images off of Google to represent the kind of colours, contrasts, images and scenes we'd like to see in our own music video.

2. Industry Information & Narrative
Theory
• Nina Sky is an American musical due composed by two identical twin sisters Nicola and
Natalie.
• Their genre in music are Hip-Hop, Reggaeton, R&B and Dance-pop.
• Their new 2012 single ‘DayDreaming’ was released on February 2 and the video on February
28.
• The structure of the music video, plays a non-linear narrative music video where the
protagonist of the video is shown as having relationships/affairs with different girls. It shows
the contrast of each of the relationship by switching each time (remaining in the same
position) of girl. It includes a series of flashbacks and flash forwards of both relationships,
perhaps to show the audience the contrast of both or simply re-telling the story of how it
started and ended. It also utilises repetition as in between the video it returns to the main
‘DayDreaming’ imagery and iconography that the singers portray. In the end of the video, a
sense of ellipsis is created as it jump cuts from an angry climax to this illusionary
‘DayDreaming’ scene. This therefore follows with the non-linear structure of the video but
also makes the audience keen to know what happened to both or to find if it’s just a dream
or real life.
3. Genre Conventions
• Their music genres varies from a mixture of Hip-Hop, Reggaeton, R&B and Dance-pop,
therefore Nina Sky might mix all these genres and their conventions in order to achieve
greater outcomes and ideas.
• In most common R&B/hip-hop videos, black and white effects may be used to set the style of
the genre and also the antique, faded effect gives a feel of neighbourhood and inner cities,
giving the audience a sense of location. A range of shots to show emotions, body language
and setting are used by using tracking shots, close ups and mid shots, which are mostly used
in Nina’s Sky video.
• In common R&B videos, women are portrayed as sexy, flirtatious and confident by their
appearance; they wear minimal clothing or just wear lingerie outfits to entice men showing
off their bodies, however in this video, one of the girls breaks the stereotype as she has a
masculine sleek figure, tattoos, piercings and a boyish hairstyle and shows a masculine
attitude towards her lover. However she still wear minimal clothing when the protagonist and
her are in bed.
Women wearing minimal clothing creates a male gaze for the male audience, where men will
only get interested in the video by the visuals of ladies and not the artist/music itself.

When the nights up, remember you in my brain, I close my eyes to find you,
I wanna make sure we meet later in my dreams, you’re my little secret.
even though you’re not the one laying with me. whenever I decide to,
that's the way we’ll keep it.
We can spend the night together, I close my eyes to find you,
do it for the rush, we don’t gotta touch, you’re my little secret.
Take a little ride whenever, whenever I decide to,
never gotta lie, if we close our eyes. and that's the way we’ll keep it.

7. Camera Work
(editing, angles, transitions)
Over the shoulder shots and are used
to show the other characters
emotions and facial expressions. It is
also used to make the transitions The girl is positioned in a high angle and the protagonist in
between the two female antagonists. a low angle, making him inferior and weak. Also the use of
Rule of Thirds is applied, making the audience focus
primarily on the protagonist.
The starting point of each transition to a different shot scene is always
focused on the protagonist, following up with a jump cut to the two
female antagonists.
8. The focus that the camera has when the
couples are holding hands is important as
it portrays the contrast between the two
relationships. The starting point always
starts in the middle, close up shot of
both couples holding hands however as
shown in the first shot, the shot is very
stable presenting they’re happy in their
relationship, making the transition and
the shot at a slow pace and smooth
whereas, in the other shot, the fast
transition and the sharp, fast movements
of the characters presents an agitated,
angry relationship between the two.
9. Representation
One of the women in this video is
represented as being aggressive and
dominant over the protagonist. She seems
to have more authority over him by the way
she talks and behaves with him, making him
weaker and inferior.
This is then evidenced in the end by the girl
slapping him across the face after they had
an argument.
This also suggests how women often
overreact as shown in the picture above,
making them agitated and all over the
place. This portrays women as violent,
therefore portraying a different side of
them away from the sweet, innocent
portrayal that they often show.
10. The male protagonist of this video, is shown as
having a mixture of emotions and feelings,
depending with what girl he is with. He seems
happy, free and having fun however he feels down,
frustrated and confused. This portrays men as
vulnerable, making the audience feel sympathy for
him. This also represents men as less powerful as
the female is in control of him. This could also be
a true representation when men are unhappy in
relationships, making them seek attention and
love elsewhere.
11. Ideas I want to take for my music
video
One thing I want to take from this video and put
in my music video is the suburb, building and
inner city and surroundings. This is because this
type of location is stereotypically seen in R&B,
urban hip-hop genre music videos, which will
meet the genre conventions of my genre.
Another idea from analysing this video, is the
daydreaming imagery, as in my planning shows
scenes where I plan to take shots of the
protagonist daydreams about past events.
Another I idea that I took from this video to
include in my music video, is the use of
flashbacks of memories of past events. I like
this idea because it makes my video different
from others for having that extra creative
effect and structure which will make
audiences interested.
