 Slow cutting between shots
 Close up shots- specifically on the characters faces to illustrate emotion
 Lighting- Dark as the narrative is typically sad e.g. heartbreak
 Includes shots of the band/ artist performing
 Narratives which tell a story and are linked to the lyrics of the song
 Diegetic sound is frequently used to set the scene in the narrative
 Long sots used to establish settings and to understand narrative (tilts and pans)
 Special editing effects
 My narrative was about a girl going through a break up and getting over the individual by leaving the country to travel. I have
conformed as I have a strong narrative and the lyrics link well to both narrative and visuals as they plead for someone to be
‘honest’. This conforms as it links closely to Andrew Goodwin’s theory of features of a music video where he claims one key
feature of seven is that both lyrics and visuals compliment each other. A specific example of my linking visuals and
narrative is in the line: ‘But if you lie to me again I’ll be the one who walks away’ . This closely links to the imagery
on screen as the female walks away from the camera towards the door, using a long shot, illustrating to the
audience how they have given up and ‘turned their back’ both physically and theoretically on the relationship.
 I have used a combination of long shots to establish the location abroad, widening the space in the frame so to signify her
endless boundaries with her new found freedom, to the audience. The extreme close ups contrast this as
they aim to highlight her emotions by filling the frame and closely involving the audience in order to create
sympathy and understanding. For example, the close ups on the eye is very personal, as the eye often a key
mode of communicating emotion, and its invasive to impact the audience so they sympathise with the
characters sadness.
 The editing effects I used also conform, specifically with the use of reverse on the picture of the couple being ripped. This shows
the confusion of emotions that the character is expressing as she is torn between love and hate, symbolised in the ripping and
repair of the photo. Furthermore, I have used Strauss’s theory of binary opposites through use of editing. I have multiple
opposites in my production: Love/hate, Happy/sad, Hot and cold. I have conformed to his theory by changing the colour hues to
indicate these opposites. Happy was illustrated through orange tones and sad was blue colour as these conventionally connote
this sense of emotion. I have also contrasted the happy and sad scenes next to each other in the sequence to highlight this
contrasting opposite.
 Through use of editing, I challenged the conventions of the indie genre. It is a common convention, as
listed earlier, that this genre uses slow cuts between shots and to some extent I conformed to this in
the sad scenes to emphasise and highlight her emotion to the audience. However, I subverted this also
as I decided to use quicker pace editing to reflect the music picking up pace (continuing to link both
visuals and auditory). The quickened pace illustrates a change in mood of both visuals and emotions of
the female character as she becomes happier and begins to get over the male antagonist. Although I
challenged the conventions of a real media product of this genre I believe it was an effective decision to
highlight the change in the narrative and continue to engage the audience rather than keeping it at
one standard pace. Overall, the faster cuts symbolise the females new found happiness while the
slower cuts address her sadness.
 The lighting I used also subverts what is conventionally seen in a scene. As well as using dark shots ,
typically used to illustrate a characters sadness, I used bright external shots to symbolise her
happiness. This challenges the narrative structure of an indie music video as they are conventionally
follow either sad or happy stories and rarely include both. This may be effective
in engaging the audience and they are unfamiliar with a narrative
structure similar to my own in the indie genre, therefore with
my music video I offer a new, fresh adaption to the conventional
indie genre.
 My music video specifically conforms with use of camera work. In this example
we can see where my production is similar to that of The Lumineers video for
‘Sleep on the floor’ . They both use very similar extreme close up camera shots on
the female facial expressions. There are also similarities in the lighting as it goes
from dark to light. This highlights the face and significance of her emotions, yet
adds the darkness connoting sadness. This illustrates that I have followed
conventions of the indie genre to produce an appropriate product.
For this example my own music video challenges the
conventional location setting in urban areas, such are
seen in videos for All Time Low ‘missing you’.
However, I have decided to locate my external shots
in a beach and surrounding areas abroad. Again
adding to my happy/ sunny mood of the scenes. I
found it to be more beneficial to subvert the
establishment of locations because an urban
environment
would not be suitable for my narrative
and would consequently change the
mood and message behind my visuals.
