HEATHER GRAHAM
CASA GUATEMALA
PREPARED BY
DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
Dear Friends,
2017 was a very special year for us here
at Casa Guatemala. We celebrated our
40th anniversary of service and
dedication to caring for Guatemala's most
vulnerable children. Things have changed
a lot since our beginning and we are happy
to grow and improve every year.
2017 saw lots of improvements with major
donations to replace our roofs, our fences and
docks. We had successful visits from teams of
doctors and dentists to ensure the best health
possible for our children. We were very proud
of our grade six class who saw all 23 students
graduate and their continue their studies
beyond Casa Guatemala.
None of this would be possible without our
amazing staff, volunteers and donors. Without
our supporters we would never be able to
accomplish this important work and many of
the children in our care would have no other
option. They would be part of the saddening
statistics of chronic malnutrition, low literacy
rates and high teenage pregnancy rates.
Thank you for believing in our work and
helping us to change the world, one child at a
time.
Heather Graham

Program: Education
BRIGHT MINDS,
BRIGHT FUTURE
Every year starts with our teacher's
professional development seminar in the
city to ensure that those who teach also
learn. This dedication to evolve our
training method means our children
receive the best education possible.
Our school runs the entire day as opposed
to the national half day programs. Many of
the students who come from the remote
villages we serve who have gone to local
public schools only receive classes a
fraction of the time and are not taught
Spanish. When we ask their parents why
they came to Casa Guatemala, they often
tell us of schools with absent teachers and
no materials.
Our integral program includes the core
subjects but also teaches life skills such as
cooking and farming, arts and crafts and
English. But it is our teachers' hands on,
24 hour care and mentoring that really
makes an impact.
Our students are in the top 80% of all school in
our region. And in 2017, all 23 grade six
students went on to continue their studies
thanks to scholarships or family support.
Statistics show that only 30% of rural indigenous
girls in Guatemala continue school after the sixth
grade. Guatemala also has one of the highest rates of
child pregnancies. In 2017, there were 5 pregnancies
in girls under 14 reported every day. Ensuring that
girls have equal access to quality education is key to
changing these statistics. And the cycle of poverty
they bring. In 2017 49% of students in Casa
Guatemala were female and 100% of female
graduates went on to continue their studies in high
school. Sex education classes help them to be
informed and empowered.
EDUCATING GIRLS
P A G E   2
Guatemala continues to top the list of chronic malnutrition, especially in
the first 1000 days of life. Our nutrition program not only provides meals
for the children in our care, but also to families lacking food security. Every
year we distribute approximately 20,000 lbs of emergency food hampers.
These donations of dry goods means single mothers like Elvira are able to
ensure her children don't go to bed hungry. Elvira is Ludi's grandmother.
His own mother abandoned him with her when she found out he was
disabled. Along with her own two small children, she struggles to ensure
that Ludi gets to his physiotherapy sessions in Zacapa, getting by on the
generosity of others. Casa Guatemala helps this family with donations of
food, funds for transportation to Zacapa, clothing and medicines. But more
than that we give Elvira and the boys love and kindness.
PROGRAM: NUTRITION- FUELING BETTER FUTURES
P A G E   3
Onsite, the children receive breakfast lunch and dinner as well as two nutritious snacks. We serve fortified soy
drinks that provide all of their vitamins and minerals needed to supplement our main diet of beans and rice;
fruits and vegetables, and of course, tortillas. We make over 2000 tortillas a day! A plant based, PhytoBlend
multivitamin is also mixed into their meals to ensure every child receives a well rounded and healthy diet.
Thanks to donors and our farm program, we are able to offer chicken and pork a few times a month as well as the
fruits and vegetables that we produce onsite. On our farm the children also learn sustainable farming practices
which they can take back to their families and diversify the foods they grow at home as well. The kids also help in
the kitchen and we work to break down gender stereotypes by promoting gender equality in the jobs and
responsibilities the kids are given.

Program: Health care
HEALTHY HAPPY KIDS
Our medical clinic is a very busy place! Not
only do we tend to the day to day health care
of the children at Casa Guatemala, but we also
serve the local communities who otherwise
would have to pay for a boat into town to go to
the public clinic. We were able to treat 484
medical cases throughout the year as well as
host 4 teams of doctors and a team of dentists
who were able to attend to all of the children in
our care. These medical teams make a big
impact on our work as we are able to ensure al
the kids receive deworming medicines, check
for any medical problems that would otherwise
go unnoticed.
Our auxiliar nurse Amelia oversees the health
of the kids both in the clinic and in the houses.
She gives health and wellness workshops to all
the children throughout the year so that they
are well informed about their bodies and their
rights. This is especially important with our
girls! They are taught sexual education from an
early age to know how to proctologist's
themselves from early pregnancy. And we
provide the same information to the boys so
that they too, play an equal role in family
planning when they are older.
Thanks to a generous gift from Dr and Mrs
Clubb, Amelia is now attending university to
become a certified nurse! We are also grateful
to Sharing the Dream who sponsor her salary.
Though Guatemala does have some free medical care in
their public hospitals, most examinations and
transportation to the city can be beyond reach for the
majority of the population. Thanks to funding from Dr and
Mrs Clubb and their friends, we have been able to help
Mario with his life saving cancer treatment. Many years
ago Casa Guatemala helped his older brother receive a
prosthetic eye and so the family turned to us again for
help. Mario has been through several rounds of
chemotherapy thanks to Casa Guatemala and we continue
to fight the cancer which has spread from his testicle to his
stomach. We provide transportation, lodging, medicines,
exams and our love and support so that Mario has what he
needs to focus on healing.

Capital Projects
NEW ROOFS FOR ALL
In 2017, we were very fortunate that some of
our regular donors decided to make a long
lasting impact and designate funds to our
infrastructure. Living in the jungle means a lot
of wear and tear and being as close as we are to
the ocean, there is a lot of corrosion because of
the salt air.
As you can see in this picture, there are a lot
of shiny new roofs in place! This is thanks to
our long time benefactor Mr Lennox McNeely
and his associates. Casa Guatemala is grateful
for Mr McNeely's dedication to our buildings!
Our roofs were full of holes and water leaked
on the kids in their houses, in the classrooms
and in the storage where we keep the clothing
and food. Thanks to his donation all of the
needed roofs were replaced and we were
even able to extend the length of the
laminates on the boys house to lessen the rain
that comes in through the windows when
there are storms.
Since 1999, when we were hit by a
devastating earthquake, Mr McNeely has
been an integral part of Casa Guatemala's
reconstruction and remodelling. His support
has impacted the lives of thousands of
children in the last 19 years and we are
forever grateful!
Our friends the Malouin Family have also been long
supporters of our cause. In 2017, they made a donation that
would leave its mark on Casa Guatemala for years to come!
With it we were able to replace all of our water tanks, the
fencing around the outer perimeter of our extensive property
and new docks to ensure the safety of the arriving by boat
and the access to our boys house.
These projects are all vital to the long term success of
Casa Guatemala but are projects that we don't easily
have the cash flow to cover on our own. Capital Project
donations make it possible that our jungle village is
safe and secure for the children we care for.
FENCES, DOCKS AND TANKS
P A G E   5
We are incredibly lucky to be
supported by our affiliated
registered charities in the US and
Canada. Our US 501 (c)(3) is
Friends of Guatemala Children Inc,
and our Canadian registered charity
is Support Casa Guatemala
Children. Together with Casa
Guatemala, these organizations
raise the majority of the funds we
need to keep our programs running.
Of course, we do have some other
incredibly generous donors from
around the world who contribute
directly to Casa Guatemala. Our
social enterprise, Hotel
Backpackers and our subsidized
Day Care in Zone 1 also contribute
to our budget.
Year in Review
DONATIONS
Our expenses are broken down by our
programs with the majority of costs
stemming from our education program
which is where we focus the majority of
our energy. This of course includes the
costs of the children's village's
maintenance and upkeep as well as our
local teaching staff.
Our Health Care Program has a low
expense due to many of the medicines
and services that are donated not having
a cost listed when we receive them. If we
were to add the real value of the medical
staff and the medicines they provide this
number would be much higher.
Our agriculture program is a
subprogram of the nutrition program
as all food grown is for the children.

  • 2. DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE Dear Friends, 2017 was a very special year for us here at Casa Guatemala. We celebrated our 40th anniversary of service and dedication to caring for Guatemala's most vulnerable children. Things have changed a lot since our beginning and we are happy to grow and improve every year. 2017 saw lots of improvements with major donations to replace our roofs, our fences and docks. We had successful visits from teams of doctors and dentists to ensure the best health possible for our children. We were very proud of our grade six class who saw all 23 students graduate and their continue their studies beyond Casa Guatemala. None of this would be possible without our amazing staff, volunteers and donors. Without our supporters we would never be able to accomplish this important work and many of the children in our care would have no other option. They would be part of the saddening statistics of chronic malnutrition, low literacy rates and high teenage pregnancy rates. Thank you for believing in our work and helping us to change the world, one child at a time. • 3. Program: Education BRIGHT MINDS, BRIGHT FUTURE Every year starts with our teacher's professional development seminar in the city to ensure that those who teach also learn. This dedication to evolve our training method means our children receive the best education possible. Our school runs the entire day as opposed to the national half day programs. Many of the students who come from the remote villages we serve who have gone to local public schools only receive classes a fraction of the time and are not taught Spanish. When we ask their parents why they came to Casa Guatemala, they often tell us of schools with absent teachers and no materials. Our integral program includes the core subjects but also teaches life skills such as cooking and farming, arts and crafts and English. But it is our teachers' hands on, 24 hour care and mentoring that really makes an impact. Our students are in the top 80% of all school in our region. And in 2017, all 23 grade six students went on to continue their studies thanks to scholarships or family support. Statistics show that only 30% of rural indigenous girls in Guatemala continue school after the sixth grade. Guatemala also has one of the highest rates of child pregnancies. In 2017, there were 5 pregnancies in girls under 14 reported every day. Ensuring that girls have equal access to quality education is key to changing these statistics. And the cycle of poverty they bring. In 2017 49% of students in Casa Guatemala were female and 100% of female graduates went on to continue their studies in high school. Sex education classes help them to be informed and empowered. EDUCATING GIRLS P A G E   2
  • 4. Guatemala continues to top the list of chronic malnutrition, especially in the first 1000 days of life. Our nutrition program not only provides meals for the children in our care, but also to families lacking food security. Every year we distribute approximately 20,000 lbs of emergency food hampers. These donations of dry goods means single mothers like Elvira are able to ensure her children don't go to bed hungry. Elvira is Ludi's grandmother. His own mother abandoned him with her when she found out he was disabled. Along with her own two small children, she struggles to ensure that Ludi gets to his physiotherapy sessions in Zacapa, getting by on the generosity of others. Casa Guatemala helps this family with donations of food, funds for transportation to Zacapa, clothing and medicines. But more than that we give Elvira and the boys love and kindness. PROGRAM: NUTRITION- FUELING BETTER FUTURES P A G E   3 Onsite, the children receive breakfast lunch and dinner as well as two nutritious snacks. We serve fortified soy drinks that provide all of their vitamins and minerals needed to supplement our main diet of beans and rice; fruits and vegetables, and of course, tortillas. We make over 2000 tortillas a day! A plant based, PhytoBlend multivitamin is also mixed into their meals to ensure every child receives a well rounded and healthy diet. Thanks to donors and our farm program, we are able to offer chicken and pork a few times a month as well as the fruits and vegetables that we produce onsite. On our farm the children also learn sustainable farming practices which they can take back to their families and diversify the foods they grow at home as well. The kids also help in the kitchen and we work to break down gender stereotypes by promoting gender equality in the jobs and responsibilities the kids are given. • 5. Program: Health care HEALTHY HAPPY KIDS Our medical clinic is a very busy place! Not only do we tend to the day to day health care of the children at Casa Guatemala, but we also serve the local communities who otherwise would have to pay for a boat into town to go to the public clinic. We were able to treat 484 medical cases throughout the year as well as host 4 teams of doctors and a team of dentists who were able to attend to all of the children in our care. These medical teams make a big impact on our work as we are able to ensure al the kids receive deworming medicines, check for any medical problems that would otherwise go unnoticed. Our auxiliar nurse Amelia oversees the health of the kids both in the clinic and in the houses. She gives health and wellness workshops to all the children throughout the year so that they are well informed about their bodies and their rights. This is especially important with our girls! They are taught sexual education from an early age to know how to proctologist's themselves from early pregnancy. And we provide the same information to the boys so that they too, play an equal role in family planning when they are older. Thanks to a generous gift from Dr and Mrs Clubb, Amelia is now attending university to become a certified nurse! We are also grateful to Sharing the Dream who sponsor her salary. Though Guatemala does have some free medical care in their public hospitals, most examinations and transportation to the city can be beyond reach for the majority of the population. Thanks to funding from Dr and Mrs Clubb and their friends, we have been able to help Mario with his life saving cancer treatment. Many years ago Casa Guatemala helped his older brother receive a prosthetic eye and so the family turned to us again for help. Mario has been through several rounds of chemotherapy thanks to Casa Guatemala and we continue to fight the cancer which has spread from his testicle to his stomach. We provide transportation, lodging, medicines, exams and our love and support so that Mario has what he needs to focus on healing. MEDICAL EMERGENCIES P A G E   4
  • 6. Capital Projects NEW ROOFS FOR ALL In 2017, we were very fortunate that some of our regular donors decided to make a long lasting impact and designate funds to our infrastructure. Living in the jungle means a lot of wear and tear and being as close as we are to the ocean, there is a lot of corrosion because of the salt air. As you can see in this picture, there are a lot of shiny new roofs in place! This is thanks to our long time benefactor Mr Lennox McNeely and his associates. Casa Guatemala is grateful for Mr McNeely's dedication to our buildings! Our roofs were full of holes and water leaked on the kids in their houses, in the classrooms and in the storage where we keep the clothing and food. Thanks to his donation all of the needed roofs were replaced and we were even able to extend the length of the laminates on the boys house to lessen the rain that comes in through the windows when there are storms. Since 1999, when we were hit by a devastating earthquake, Mr McNeely has been an integral part of Casa Guatemala's reconstruction and remodelling. His support has impacted the lives of thousands of children in the last 19 years and we are forever grateful! Our friends the Malouin Family have also been long supporters of our cause. In 2017, they made a donation that would leave its mark on Casa Guatemala for years to come! With it we were able to replace all of our water tanks, the fencing around the outer perimeter of our extensive property and new docks to ensure the safety of the arriving by boat and the access to our boys house. These projects are all vital to the long term success of Casa Guatemala but are projects that we don't easily have the cash flow to cover on our own. Capital Project donations make it possible that our jungle village is safe and secure for the children we care for. FENCES, DOCKS AND TANKS P A G E   5
  • 7. We are incredibly lucky to be supported by our affiliated registered charities in the US and Canada. Our US 501 (c)(3) is Friends of Guatemala Children Inc, and our Canadian registered charity is Support Casa Guatemala Children. Together with Casa Guatemala, these organizations raise the majority of the funds we need to keep our programs running. Of course, we do have some other incredibly generous donors from around the world who contribute directly to Casa Guatemala. Our social enterprise, Hotel Backpackers and our subsidized Day Care in Zone 1 also contribute to our budget. Year in Review DONATIONS Our expenses are broken down by our programs with the majority of costs stemming from our education program which is where we focus the majority of our energy. This of course includes the costs of the children's village's maintenance and upkeep as well as our local teaching staff. Our Health Care Program has a low expense due to many of the medicines and services that are donated not having a cost listed when we receive them. If we were to add the real value of the medical staff and the medicines they provide this number would be much higher. Our agriculture program is a subprogram of the nutrition program as all food grown is for the children. Casa Guatemala EXPENSES PAGE 6
