OYSTER STORY
Dr. Abhijit Mitra, Associate Professor and former Head, Dept. of Marine Science, University of Calcutta (INDIA) has been active in the sphere of Oceanography since 1985. He obtained his Ph.D as NET qualified scholar in 1994. Since then he joined Calcutta Port Trust and WWF (World Wide Fund), in various capacities to carry out research programmes on environmental science, biodiversity conservation, climate change and carbon sequestration. Presently Dr. Mitra is serving as the advisor of Oceanography Division of Techno India University, Kolkata. He has to his credit about 388 scientific publications in various National and International journals, and 34 books of postgraduate standards. Dr. Mitra has successfully completed about 16 projects on biodiversity loss in fishery sector, coastal pollution, alternative livelihood, climate change and carbon sequestration. Dr. Mitra also visited as faculty member and invited speakers in several foreign Universities of Singapore, Kenya, Oman and USA. In 2008, Dr. Mitra was invited as visiting fellow at University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, USA to deliver a series of lecture on Climate Change. Dr. Mitra also successfully guided 29 Ph.D students. Presently his domain of expertise includes environmental science, mangrove ecology, sustainable aquaculture, alternative livelihood, climate change and carbon sequestration.
Environmental issues
Freshwater and coastal aquaculture development can benefit from internal and external experience for preventing environmental damage and for avoiding harmful effects of degradation on aquaculture resources. Strategies to compensate for the loss of aquatic fauna (e.g. due to physical obstructions) are directly linked to important environmental issues, such as the transfer of exotic species, the spread of diseases and loss of genetic diversity, eutrophication, impairment of aesthetic qualities and the disruption of indigenous fish stocks.
There presently, conceptual frameworks for aquatic environment management backed by legal and administrative tools to create or enforce ration systems for water management, land use or fisheries and aquaculture development strengthened by adaptive institutionalization.

By protecting critical habitats and allowing fish populations to increase in abundance, FCZs can serve dual purposes of protecting fish biodiversity and enhancing food security and livelihoods for local communities. Rapid development in the Mekong Basin has the potential to impact fish habitat and abundance, and effective fish conservation and management tools are urgently needed. Many organizations have engaged in establishing FCZs in the Mekong Basin, and FCZs number in the hundreds in Lao PDR alone. FISHBIO is working to establish FCZs in several villages on the mainstem Mekong River in northern Lao PDR, and has seen substantial local support for the concept. While FCZs are compelling in principle, the most important consideration is whether they are successful in practice. Biophysical, socio-economic and governance monitoring is greatly needed to address whether FCZs are effective tools for meeting their intended objectives. Both technological and community-based approaches can play an important role in the biological evaluation of FCZ effectiveness, and collecting such data could improve the management of FCZs throughout the region.

Given the expected global population increase by 50 % in 2050, there is a strong need for improved food supply. Farming the ocean is a likely option. Aquaculture low in the food chain, without the provision of formulated feed, ie shellfish and seaweed should offer solutions. Given actual production trends in Europe, showing a decrease rather than a production increase, there is a clear need for an innovation agenda for all parties involved: producers, processors, governments, and stakeholders.
Parrotfish and the recovery resilience of coral reefs: A case study from Bonaire

Aquaculture is the fastest growing food production system and almost half of the seafood consumed worldwide now comes from aquaculture farms. Problem & prospects of seaweed farming
Seaweed is a marine alga that is generally classified as a plant. Seaweed is a primitive type of plants lacking true roots, Steams and leaves. Seaweed farming is highly developed in many south-east Asian countries. However, the seaweed industry in Bangladesh is an initial stage. People in Bangladesh are still not aware of the seaweed potential.

This review article examines the effect of aquaculture on global fish supplies. It finds that while aquaculture has more than doubled global fish production in the past 15 years and now accounts for over 25% of fish for human consumption, some aquaculture practices may diminish wild fish stocks. Specifically, farming carnivorous species like salmon and shrimp requires large inputs of wild fish used for feed. On balance, aquaculture still contributes to global fish supplies, but to sustain this contribution into the future, the industry must reduce reliance on wild fish in feeds and adopt more environmentally sound practices.

Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic organisms such as fish, crustaceans, mollusks and aquatic plants. It involves cultivating these populations under controlled conditions and can be contrasted with commercial fishing which harvests wild populations. Aquaculture is the fastest growing food production system and almost half of the seafood consumed worldwide now comes from aquaculture farms. Aquaculture has a long history dating back thousands of years to ancient Egypt and China and continues to grow in importance to meet the rising global demand for seafood.

Problem & prospects of seaweed farming
Seaweed is a marine alga that is generally classified as a plant. Seaweed is a primitive type of plants lacking true roots, Steams and leaves. Seaweed farming is highly developed in many south-east Asian countries. However, the seaweed industry in Bangladesh is an initial stage. People in Bangladesh are still not aware of the seaweed potential.

This review article examines the effect of aquaculture on global fish supplies. It finds that while aquaculture has more than doubled global fish production in the past 15 years and now accounts for over 25% of fish for human consumption, some aquaculture practices may diminish wild fish stocks. Specifically, farming carnivorous species like salmon and shrimp requires large inputs of wild fish used for feed. On balance, aquaculture still contributes to global fish supplies, but to sustain this contribution into the future, the industry must reduce reliance on wild fish in feeds and adopt more environmentally sound practices.

The box jellyfish is one of the most dangerous jellyfish species. It has a complex nervous system and eyes, unlike most jellyfish, and can move faster than other jellyfish. Its long tentacles contain stinging cells that inject a powerful venom which can kill humans. The box jellyfish lives in tropical waters worldwide but populations have increased in Australia possibly due to climate change. It preys on fish and crustaceans using its venomous tentacles and complex eyes that allow it to hunt actively.

This questionnaire is the result of Charlotte Brockington MSc. Charlotte's project aims to study how fish respond to disturbances by recreation activities such as boating, angling, swimming, cycling, and walking. If fish become habituated to the disturbances from recreational activities, they could then be at risk of predation due to their lack of avoidance behaviours. The information gathered from 230 questionnaires, experiment lab work and literature review will help inform river users management plans. This one year MSc was funded by the KESS2 project in collaboration with Canoe Wales, and Natural Resources Wales.

Getting student’s hands wet

SMARTAQUA fact sheet posters

The objective is to rear lumpfish larvae from broodstock caught in both south coast and Scottish waters. This will help reduce the UK salmon industry's dependence on lumpfish imports by contributing knowledge to produce sustainable larval lumpfish sourced from UK waters. The project involves knowledge transfer, gap analysis, larval rearing, weaning, research sampling, and market development activities. Outputs will include standard operating procedures, £1 million in private investment, disease screening of 7 pathogens, and a new product - disease screened native lumpfish larvae.

cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
