GREEN MAN FESTIVAL BACKGROUND
Green Man
Green Man Festival is an independent
music and arts festival held annually in
mid-August in the Brecon Beacons, Wales
since 2003.
It is the largest contemporary music and
arts festival in Wales and has been given
major event status by Welsh Government
due to the festival's positive impact and
wealth creation.
Einstein’s Garden
Einsteins’s Garden is the first UK festival
science engagement and is now the
playground of some of the world's top
research organisations, including
Swansea University.
Each year 40 stalls (worth over £17,000)
are allocated to Welsh Charities and Not-
for-Profit Organisations.
SMARTAQUA aims for the
festival
1. To disseminate SMARTAQUA and
research collaborations with Welsh
companies to a wider audience
2. To promote gender equality
3. To promote sustainability

STALL DESIGN AND SCIENCE COMMUNICATION
A fish with an itch
Dr. Sara Barrento created the stall design to
deliver an underwater experience for
grownups and children. The stall design
facilitated conversations around cleaner fish
and kelp forests. We attracted visitors to our
stall using an ocean drum, a forest of seaweeds
made of flower paper, origami lumpfish clinging
on the kelp and three salmon cushions with sea
lice on the side. This was an invitation to a a
story: “Once upon a time in the deep, deep
ocean, there was a fish with an itch…” We also
invited visitors to dive in our seawater tub, and
find the shells in the bottom, or just sit in our
beach sofas for a chat, an origami session …
Our partners contributed with freebies (e.g.
pens, leaflets, handbooks) and we created
posters to display SMARTAQUA activities with
Ocean Matters, The Cleaner Fish Company,
FishGen and 360 Aquaculture.

1. Lumpfish Origami
Create your own lumpfish to help the
salmon get rid of the sea lice
Target audience: families
2. Find the sealice
Game based on a maize. Several sea lice
are displayed on the side of a salmon, you
need to find the sealice starting on the
blue arrow.
Target audience: children
3. Dive In
Visitors had the opportunity to wear
diving masks and grab shells from a tub
filled with real seawater from Swansea
Bay.
Target audience: children
SMARTAQUA ACTIVITIES
We had a diverse team of six people including delivery officers, project managers and a finance officer. Three members
of staff were on site during opening hours (10:00 to 18:00) and we took shifts. We delivered three activities.

MEANINGFUL CONVERSATIONS
Our team included a technician who started lumpfish
aquaculture with native fish in the UK four years ago (André
Pires), an ecologist (Dr. Richard O’Rorke), a marine biologist
(Dr Sara Barrento), but also our SMARTAQUA finance officer
(Emma Wardman) and AMBER project manager (Victoria
Hurst).
Together we facilitated meaningful conversations about
aquaculture of salmon, tilapia, seaweeds and microalgae.
Fish welfare and sustainability was a key topic. Seaweeds and
microalgae were viewed as sustainable and healthy. Some
visitors were familiar with Spirulina.

MEANINGFUL CONVERSATIONS
Dr. Santosh Vijaykumar joined our team to do a podcast about
conflicting news on food in the media. Santosh is a senior
research fellow at Northumbria University and has been
collaborating with Dr. Sara Barrento through the cherish de –
Digital Economy Research Centre. Together we had the
opportunity to interview visitors to our stall.
CrossCuttingThemes
11© Duarte, Inc. 2014
SMARTAQUA @GREEN MAN FESTIVAL
AND THE CROSS CUTTING THEMES
The Cross Cutting Themes
(CCTs) also referred to as
horizontal themes are issues that
touch on general principles such
as democracy, equality,
sustainability and good
governance. The SMARTAQUA
team implemented a sustainable,
healthy and gender equality
delivery approach to Green
Man.
Sustainability
Awareness
We support low carbon and
sustainable transport solutions and
our team cycled to the festival and
back. We twitted about it, we did
LinkedIn, Facebook and Strava.
We have a full story on the
SMARTAQUA.ORG.UK website
and shared our route.
Four members of SMARTAQUA
cycle on a daily basis to work.
Equal
Opportunities
We had a very diverse staff team
at Einstein’s Garden. Different
nationalities (Portuguese, New
Zealanders and British), mixed
professions (2 researchers, 2
project managers, and one finance
officer), 2 men, 4 women, together,
committed to deliver STEM
activities for all. This diversity was
highly praised by visitors.

  • 5. 5© Duarte, Inc. 2014 STALL DESIGN AND SCIENCE COMMUNICATION A fish with an itch Dr. Sara Barrento created the stall design to deliver an underwater experience for grownups and children. The stall design facilitated conversations around cleaner fish and kelp forests. We attracted visitors to our stall using an ocean drum, a forest of seaweeds made of flower paper, origami lumpfish clinging on the kelp and three salmon cushions with sea lice on the side. This was an invitation to a a story: “Once upon a time in the deep, deep ocean, there was a fish with an itch…” We also invited visitors to dive in our seawater tub, and find the shells in the bottom, or just sit in our beach sofas for a chat, an origami session … Our partners contributed with freebies (e.g. pens, leaflets, handbooks) and we created posters to display SMARTAQUA activities with Ocean Matters, The Cleaner Fish Company, FishGen and 360 Aquaculture.
