Carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide
released into the atmosphere as a result of the
activities of a particular individual, organization
or community during a given period.
It relates to the amount of GHG produced in our day
to day lives through burning fossil fuels for
electricity, heating or transportation.
 Primary Carbon Footprint
This is the measure of carbon dioxide emitted directly
by energy consumption of a particular person,
community or organization.
ex:Transportation, Electricity,Manufacturing process
 SecondaryCarbon Footprint
This is the measure of carbon dioxide emitted that is
not under our control by products we consume.
ex: Food, clothings, buildings etc.
 2.5 acres deforestation - 500 tons CO2e
 Forest fire – 100 million tons CO2e
 A new car – 17 tons CO2e
 A new computer – 720 kg CO2e
 Production of cheeseburger – 2.5 kg CO2e
 Plastic Water bottle – 200g CO2e
 A web search – 2gm CO2e
 Manufacturing of phone – 16kg CO2e
 Operating Computer for 32 hours – 1kg CO2e
 Light on for a year – 400kg CO2e
 Moderate Cellphone used per year – 47kg CO2e
 Production of 5 plastic bags – 1kg CO2e
1 kWh = 0.23 kg of CO2.
Conversion Factor for electricity= 0.523
In one week , I consume 8 units.
Thus 8*0.523= 4.184 kg CO2.
In fifteen days,CO2 emitted is 8.368 kg.
In one year, CO2 emitted is 217.568 kg .
1 liter Petrol = 2.3 Kg CO2
In one week, I use 0.5 liter petrol
Thus, 0.5 liter petrol=1.15 Kg CO2.
In fifteen days,CO2 emitted is 2.3 Kg CO2.
In a year,CO2 emitted due to vehicle becomes
59.8 Kg CO2.
1 liter of LPG = 1665 gm of CO2
I consume 3 liter LPG in one week.
3*1665=4995 gm of CO2
=4.99 Kg of CO2
In fifteen days,CO2 emitted is 9.75 Kg.
In a year, CO2 emitted is
259.74 Kg CO2
Quantity Carbon dioxide emitted
1 plastic bottle 0.5 kg CO2
10 plastic bags 2 kg CO2
0.5 liter petrol 1.15 kg CO2
8 kWh electricity 4.184 kg CO2
1 liter oil 3 kg CO2
3 liter LPG 4.99 kg CO2
1 burger 3.1 kg CO2
Operating computer for 16
hours
0.5 kg CO2
Total 19.424 kg CO2
Data Collected for CO2 emissions for a week
 The Kyoto protocol is a protocol to the
UNFCCC aimed at compating global warming.
It is signed in the year 1997 by 191 countries
but came in effect in the year 2005.
 GOAL : Stabilization of green house gas
concentrations in the atmosphere at a level
that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic
interference with the climate system.
Includes: A set of country specific reductions
of the emissions of “Green house gases” that
absorb and re-emit infrared radiation.
A laptop can be up to 80% more energy efficient than a desktop
Because Fans use a lot less power
If you are using air conditioner then set it to 23°C which is the
most energy efficient to cool the house.
This will save your water, electricity, and washing powder
If you are showering 10 minutes you are wasting enough water to feel a
pool in course of year….
By this you can save up to 16000 liters of water.
It can be concluded that carbon footprints
carries a great importance in our life.
Everyone should realize its effect and should
try to protect nature from its adverse effect.
 It wouldn’t have been possible for us to
know such an important aspect without
your support to give us such a golden
opportunity to present our project and
also for encouraging us to do a detail
analysis on this topic….
