CARBON FOOTPRINT
1. CARBON FOOTPRINT AIM: Apply the concept of ‘carbon footprint’ to everyday life situations by Sara Gandey (2010)
2. INTRODUCTION Something to draw you all in.... TASK Read these instructions first. Close your eyes. Breathe in slowly to the count of 3. Breathe out to the count of 3. Repeat 3 times steps 2, 3 and 4. Question to think about as you are breathing- What gas are you breathing out? by Sara Gandey (2010)

Repeat 3 times steps 2, 3 and 4. Question to think about as you are breathing- What gas are you breathing out? CARBON DIOXIDE which leads us to..... by Sara Gandey (2010)
4. Imagination time....... Now taking the idea of carbon out of carbon dioxide, think about wandering along a sandy beach, when you look behind you, what do you see.... by Sara Gandey (2010)

6. So now we have the concept title But what does it mean? CARBON FOOTPRINT!! by Sara Gandey (2010)
7. So now we have the concept title CARBON FOOTPRINT!! But what does it mean? ‘The carbon footprint is a measure of the impact that human activities have on the amount of greenhouse gases produced, measured in terms of kilograms of carbon dioxide produced per year.’ (from ‘AQA A2 Human Biology by Lowrie and Goodger) by Sara Gandey (2010)
8. BUT THERE ARE DIFFERENT TYPES PRIMARY CARBON FOOTPRINT This is a measure of how much carbon dioxide is given out directly by energy consumption so you are in control of this type of carbon footprint. SECONDARY CARBON FOOTPRINT This is a measure of carbon dioxide given out that is not under your control by products you consume. by Sara Gandey (2010)
9. CLASSIFYING CARBON FOOTPRINT ACTIVITY The following activities in a person’s life are examples of primary or secondary carbon footprints (adapted activities from ‘AQA A2 Human Biology’ by Lowrie and Goodger): Imported food Home appliances permanently on stand-by Ready-meals Eating large quantities of red meat Flying to work from London to Shoreham Using a car to drive into town for 2 minutes Cheese-strings Energy-efficient condenser boiler Using a tumble-drier Drinking bottled/filtered water only TASK: On your worksheet- follow the instructions to complete the table by Sara Gandey (2010)
12. EXAMINING PERSON A’S CARBON FOOTPRINT In the Figure opposite, there is an example of a typical person’s carbon footprint. TASK- Answer these questions: What is the highest carbon footprint percentage of Person A? What type of carbon footprint does House- buildings and Furniture represent? From the opposite Figure, how could you reduce Person A’s carbon footprint? by Sara Gandey (2010)
13. EXAMINING PERSON A’S CARBON FOOTPRINT In the Figure opposite, there is an example of a typical person’s carbon footprint. TASK- Answer these questions: What is the highest carbon footprint percentage of Person A? 15% Home- gas, oil and coal What type of carbon footprint does House- buildings and Furniture represent? From the opposite Figure, how could you reduce Person A’s carbon footprint? by Sara Gandey (2010)
14. Secondary carbon footprint From the opposite Figure, how could you reduce Person A’s carbon footprint? by Sara Gandey (2010)
15. Secondary carbon footprint From the opposite Figure, how could you reduce Person A’s carbon footprint? By reducing these activities- private transport, holiday flights, car manufacture and delivery and Financial services= 23% plus others if possible within reasonable limits by Sara Gandey (2010)

19. MUSICAL CARBON FOOTPRINT TASK Listen to the piece of music (THOMAS GANDEY- FAT CONTROLLER) found at http://soundcloud.com/search?q%5Bfulltext%5D=thomas+gandey State what kind of transport it represents. STEAM TRAIN Is this form of transport a primary or a secondary carbon footprint? PRIMARY AND SECONDARY CARBON FOOTPRINT Why? Primary- you can travel on a train instead of using your car. Secondary- you can’t control the amount of fuel used on a train if its not full of people e.g. coal by Sara Gandey (2010)
