Sustainable dyeing process to cope with Industry 4.0Emran Ali
Value addition for textiles is an important process and it is required for all products including yarn, fabric, garment, fashion apparel, floor covering, and the majority of technical textile. For each textile processing, the processor used enormous amounts of chemicals and water in order to attain the desired result. After processing the residual processed chemicals and waters are treated with effluent treatment and discharged into the mainstream. The amount of residual unfixed dyes, metal compounds, formaldehyde-based dye-fixing agents, hydrocarbon-based softeners, and all types of dye-bath auxiliaries, as well as their degradation nature against the environment, are the deciding factors for its sustainability. There are many factors influencing the overall efficiency or value addition of a textile product, which play an important role in its sustainability.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

3. DYEING TECHNOLOGY
SUSTAINABLE
EASY FADING INDIGO
NO WORSENING OF THE CROCKING
STUDIED FOR LASER AND OZONE TREATMENTS
Indigo Juice is a “Made in Candiani” Dyeing Technology that we apply to 100% Indigo shades.
Thanks to this technology we keep the indigo very superficial on the yarn (without worsening
the crocking) when we are dyeing the warp. This means that once the jeans are going to be
washed in the laundry it takes only a small amount of water and energy to wash-down the
indigo achieving great contrasts and designs.
Indigo Juice dyed fabrics are studied for top performance with sustainable laundry treatments
such as Laser, Ozone, Ice.
This dyeing technology allows to achieve a relevant increase in sustainability throughout all
levels of the production process.
4. DYEING TECHNOLOGY
SUSTAINABLE
N-Denim, the "N"stands for Nitrogen, is a very futuristic “Made in Candiani” Dyeing Technology
that we have recently developed and patented.
Nitrogen delays the oxidation process and accelerates the penetration of Indigo into the yarns.
The result is a very deep and higly fixed dye, ideal to make “no-fade” denim garments.
This system allows us to reduce the number of indigo baths and therefore save up to 33% of
water and 50% of chemicals. The cut down on water and chemicals grants us a cleaner and
more eco-friendly dye and proves how Candiani matches Innovation and Sustainability.
THE CLEANEST & MOST ECO-FRIENDLY DYEING TECHNOLOGY
NITROGEN ACCELERATES THE PENETRATION OF INDIGO INTO THE YARNS
SAVES UP TO 33% OF WATER AND 50% OF CHEMICALS CONSUMPTION
5. This in-house developed technology is the beating heart of Candiani's Premium Stretch.
It consists in a special combinationof a spinning and a finishing technique that confers superior
performance and a premium look and hand-feel to the fabric.
The main characteristics are:
1. We spin a great elasticity performance weft containing LYCRA® DualFX
2. We blend the T400 polyester and the Lycra elastomer together using a secret mixing
technique and then we spin them into the cotton yarn
2. From Comfort Stretch to Power Stretch the weft can reach up to 75% elasticity
3. Through a special finishing technique we achieve highest recovery and lowest growth
4. Studied to make jeans that do not bag out
SPINNING & FINISHING TECHNOLOGY
FINISHED TO ACHIEVE HIGHER RECOVERY AND LOWER GROWTH
STUDIED TO MAKE JEANS THAT DO NOT BAG OUT
GREAT ELASTICITY PERFORMANCE WEFT-UP TO 75% ELASTICITY
6. Based on our SLING technology the SHAPER kicks this tech up a notch enhancing the techni-
cal, optical and tactile aspects of Candiani's Premium Stretch Denim.
It results from the combination between a special Spinning process and an alternative
Finishing Technology and applies to 5 different levels of performance:
Shaper0 - Elasticity 18%
Shaper1 - Elasticity 35%
Shaper2 - Elasticity 45%
Shaper3 - Elasticity 60%
Shaper4 - Elasticity 75%
The main characteristics are:
1. Technical improvement: 50% reduction of the weft-shrinkage allows great improvements
during the garment manufacturing process.
2. Optical Improvement: Allows to create open weave constructions even on super stretch
fabrics keeping the twill-line pronounced for an authentic denim look.
3. Tactile Improvement: an alternative Finishing process enhances the hand feel conferring a
naturally soft touch to the fabric.
Super stretch fabrics can now be worn by MAN as well. This Stretch Technology applies
perfectly to regular fits allowing finally Men to enjoy the comfort of a super stretch.
THE LATEST FRONTIER IN PREMIUM STRETCH DENIM
SPINNING & FINISHING TECHNOLOGY
7. With SHAPER 0 we achieved an unheard-of result: Growth reduction to the very minimum.
The performance ranges from 16% - 20% Elasticity and the main characteristics are true to the
Shaper family:
ZERO GROWTH
SPINNING & FINISHING TECHNOLOGY
8. Candiani Denim was established in 1938 in the middle of the green planes between Milan and
the Alps and has been operating in the same town ever since.
Candiani's close relationship with its local environment and community makes us particularly
sensitive to environmental issues.
As a market leader, we believe that we have the responsibility to demonstrate how a business
can thrive respecting the environment in which it operates.
We take our responsibility very seriously. That is why we are committed to continuously
monitor and reduce our environmental impact and contribute to improve the health of our
natural resources where we operate.
It is a common believe that sustainability means sourcing and processing organic cotton, well
in Candiani we believe that sustainability is much more than that, it is a mindset, a scientific,
technical and moral approach to the entire productive organism.
That means that we research sustainability on many different levels:
1) Layout and engineering of the production facilities
In 76 years of experience Candiani has developed and optimized its strategic engineering
know-how to the extent that many technologies and work management principles have
become a standard in the industry today.
2) Responsible sourcing
Our aim in responsible sourcing is to ensure that suppliers work according to the same princi-
ples and values that we do.
This means consumers can trust the way our materials are sourced before manufacturing
begins.
We do source organic cotton following our clients' demand but we spontaneously decided to
embrace Better Cotton Initiative. More than 25% of the overall cotton we process is sourced
from Better Cotton Initiative which means that every single quality we produce contains 25% of
BCI cotton.
We are a great supporter of BCI, an organization that exists to make global cotton production
better for the people who produce it, for the environment it grows in and better for the sector’s
future. http://bettercotton.org/
3) Innovation equals Sustainability
The development of new sustainable technologies is not only crucial to the prosperity and
quality of life for future generations, but it is also central to the long term competitiveness of
our business.
Candiani constantly develops and patents new technologies for each production department
(spinning, dyeing, weaving, finishing) which allow us to improve our products and increase
their sustainability.
A great example are these two revolutionary "Made in Candiani" dyeing systems, a real
game-changer:
1) N-Denim
2) Indigo Juice
They both increase the sustainability of our clients' products but in two completely different
ways:
- with the N-Denim system we save Water and Chemicals in-house while we dye the fabrics
- with the Indigo Juice we allow the laundries to save water and energy while they treat the
garments
CANDIANI - SUSTAINABILITY
9. N-Denim vs Indigo Juice
The N-Denim is a very futuristic Nitrogen dyeing technology that we have recently developed
and patented.
Nitrogen delays the oxidation process and accelerates the penetration of Indigo into the yarns.
This system allows us to dye our denim saving up to 33% of water and 50% of chemicals
avoiding hydro sulfites and fixation agents.
The cut down on water and chemicals grants us a cleaner and more eco-friendly dye and
proves how Candiani matches Innovation and Sustainability.
Another water saving dyeing technology Candiani has developed internally is the Indigo Juice.
Contrary to the N-Denim here we achieve the opposite; we keep the indigo very superficial on
the yarn (without worsening the crocking).
This means that once the jeans are going to be washed in the laundry it takes only a small
amount of water and energy to wash-down the indigo achieving great effects and images.
Indigo Juice dyed fabrics are studied for top performance with sustainable laundry treatments
such as Laser, Ozone, Ice.
This dyeing technology allows to achieve a relevant increase in sustainability throughout al
levels of the production process.
4) Waste Management
At Candiani we view recycling as a key part of our product lifecycle management and are
committed to the principles of Reduce, Re-use and Recycle.
We believe limiting waste as much as possible is absolutely necessary to safeguard the envi-
ronment. Therefore we collect and recycle our own waste of yarns from the spinning, warping
and dyeing departments and create recycled yarns that confer a beautiful new look and feel to
the fabrics of our recycled range.
5) Workers are our priority
Great people are our greatest asset in order to achieve the distinguished "Made in Italy"
quality.
All 650 employees come from Robecchetto and its neighboring towns and know that they are
part of something unique.
Workplace safety is not just a question of complying with the law - Italy has by far some of the
most protective labor laws amongst all other countries where denim is produced - but it is a
moral responsibility.
Our welfare oriented approach puts the health and the safety of our people as a priority.
Our efforts are recognized and certified worldwide.
Alongside statutory obligations in the field of environmental conservation, Candiani adopts a
whole series of voluntary standards which are issued by national, European and international
organizations.
This unique approach to Sustainability grants us the reputation of
The Greenest Mill in the Blue World.
CANDIANI - SUSTAINABILITY
10. Candy Fibers are all those fabrics that contain a blend of different fibers. We spin the yarns

12. Candiani collects and recycles all the first quality cotton that gets discarded during the
production process, especially in the the spinning, warping and dyeing departments.
The recycling process is handled according to the rules and procedures of the ICEA, which has
granted Candiani the GRS certificate.
Candiani developed a recycled fabrics range that shows a noteworthy characteristic: the blue
cast of the recycled yarns increases the authentic look and feel of the fabric.
