Things that wouldn’t hurt
      you to know
• TO BRING AWARENESS OF
  OBJECTS AND FOOD IN OUR
  EVERY DAY LIVES THAT HURTS
AND HELPS WHEN IT COMES TO
  CANCER.
FOOD
VEGETABLES
• BROCCOLI, CABBAGE, and CAULIFLOWER
    – have chemical compound called indole-3-carbinol that can combat breast cancer by
      converting a cancer-promoting estrogen.
    – especially sprouts, also have phytochemical sulforaphane, a product of glucoraphanin-
believed to aid in preventing some types of cancer, like colon and rectal cancer.
BroccoSprouts that have a consistent level of sulforaphane-as much as 20 times
higher than the levels found in mature heads of broccoli.

• CARROTS
     – Contain a lot of beta-carotene, may help reduce a wide range of cancers including
lung, mouth, throat, stomach, intestine, bladder, prostate and breast.
     – SOME RESEARCH INDICATED BETA-CAROTENE MAY ACTUALLY CAUSE
CANCER, BUT THIS HAS NOT PROVEN THAT EATING CARROTS, UNLESS IN
VERY LARGE QUANTITIES (2-3 KILOS A DAY) CAN CAUSE CANCER.
     – Falcarinol that is found in carrots has been found to reduce the risk of cancer,
according to Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences. Isolated cancer cell grow more
slowly when exposed to falcarinol. This substance is a polyacethylen, however, so it
is important not to cook the carrots!
FOOD (cont.)
• KALE
  – has indoles, nitrogen compounds which may help stop the conversion of certain
lesions to cancerous cells in estrogen-sensitive tissues.
  – Isothiocyanates, phytochemicals found in Kale, are thought to suppress tumor
growth and block cancer-causing substances from reaching their targets.
• MUSHROOMS
  – Shiitake, maitake, reishi, Agaricus blazei Murill, and Coriolus Versicolor appear to
help the body fight cancer and build the immune system.
  – Polysaccharides, especially Lentinan, powerful compounds that help in building
    immunity.
  – are a source of Beta Glucan.
  – have a protein called Lectin, which attacks cancerous cells and prevents them
    from multiplying.
FOOD (cont.)
• SEAWEED
  – and other sea vegetables contain beta-carotene, protein, vitamin B 12, fiber and
chlorophyll, as well as chlorophylones- important fatty acids that may help in the
    fight against breast cancer.
  – have high concentrations of the minerals potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron,
    and iodine.

FRUIT
• AVOCADOS
  – Rich in glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that attacks free radicals in the body
by blocking intestinal absorption of certain fats.
  – Supply more potassium than bananas
  – Strong source of beta-carotene.
  – Scientists believe that may also be useful in treating viral hepatitis (a cause of
liver cancer) as well as other sources of liver damage.
FOOD (cont.)
• FIG
  – have a derivative of benzaldehyde.
  – contain vitamins A and C, and calcium, magnesium and potassium, may curtail
appetite and improve weight loss efforts
  – Institute of Physical and Chemical Research in Tokyo say benzaldehyde is highly
    effective at shrinking tumors.

• GRAPEFRUITS
   – contain monoterpenes, believed to help prevent cancer by sweeping
     carcinogens out of the body.
   – studies show that may inhibit the proliferation of breast cancer cells in vitro.
   – contains vitamin C, beta-carotene, and folic acid
• GRAPES
   – Red grapes contain bioflavonoids, powerful antioxidants that work as cancer
     preventives.
Avoid COSMETICS
                              containing
                              • Formaldehyde
                              • Parabens
                              • phthalates (endocrin
                                disrupting preservatives)

                              *100 unique chemicals in every
                              day personal products .

          MINERAL OIL (LIQUID PETROLEUM)
IS A BY PRODUCT OF PETROLEUM AND IS KNOWN TO INCREASE THE
                      RISK OF CANCER.

• Studies find that smoked and pickled foods contain
  various carcinogens

  • Take a 30-minute walk every evening after dinner
to reduce your risk of breast cancer.
CUT A KIWI FRUIT IN HALF, SPOON OUT THE
FLESH
• Kiwi is a little hand grenade of cancer fighting antioxidants,
including vitamin C, vitamin E, lutein, and copper
• Rub a couple of cut kiwifruit on a low-fat cut of meat for tenderizing

ADD GARLIC TO EVERYTHING YOU EAT
• Contains sulfur compounds that may stimulate the immune
system’s natural defenses against cancer, and may have the
  potential to reduce tumor growth.
• Studies suggest that garlic can reduce stomach cancer by as much
  as a factor of 12

TAKE UP A TEA HABIT
• Protects against a variety of cancers as well as heart disease
• Chemical in green tea EGCG could be one of the most powerful
  anticancer compounds ever discovered.
BLEACH
is linked to the rising rates of breast cancer in women,
reproductive problems in men and learning and
behavioral problems in children

COAT BARBECUE FOOD WITH A THICK SAUCE
• Grilling meat can create a variety of cancer-causing
chemicals if the charring flames touch the meat
• American Institute for Cancer Research found that coating
the meat with a thick marinade and preventing direct
contact with the flames reduced the amount of chemical

EVERY TIME YOU GO TO THE BATHROOM, STOP BY THE
KITCHEN OR WATER COOLER FOR A GLASS OF WATER
• Published in The New England Journal of Medicine in 1996
found men who drank six 8-ounces of water daily slashed
their risk of bladder cancer in half.
• Another study for women lowered their risk of colon cancer
  reducing risk by 45 percent.
