SOLUTION FOCUSED
THERAPY
BY: HEATHER CAMP
SOLUTION FOCUSED BRIEF THERAPY (SFBT) KEY IDEAS:
“According to Trepper, 2010”:
1. SFBT is based on finding solutions rather than solving problems.
2. The primary focus in the therapy is working towards the clients
future rather than focusing on the past.
3. “Clients are encouraged to increase the frequency of current useful
behaviors” (Trepper, 2010).
4. “No problem happens all the time. There are exceptions – that is,
times when the problem could have happened but didn’t – that can
be used by the client and therapist to coconstruct solutions”
(Trepper. 2010).
SOLUTION FOCUSED BRIEF THERAPY KEY
IDEAS:
1. Finding alternatives to patterns of behavior
that are undesirable. , cognition, and
interaction by therapists and clients as such.
2. Thought that small changes can lead to
larger changes.
3. The solutions that are derived may not be
directly related to any problem that has
been identified.
• SFBT IS AN APPROACH THAT DOESN’T FOCUS ON DIAGNOSING AND
TREATING THE DISORDER, BUT FOCUSES ON CHANGE.
THE QUESTIONS THE THERAPIST USES IN SESSIONS ARE USED TO
LISTEN AND UNDERSTAND THE CLIENTS’ THOUGHTS SUCH AS THE
GOAL FOR THE CLIENT. THE PRACTITIONER WILL ALSO ASK
QUESTIONS AND FOCUS ON THE CLIENTS WORDS AND CONNECT
RESPONSES TO CO CONSTRUCT NEW SOLUTIONS.
THREE KEY POINTS TO CONVERSATIONS IN SFBT
Client concerns such as important people in their lives, vision of their desired future, strengths,
motivation, confidence level and progress are important to talk about.
SFBT conversations involve co-constructing new meanings to the client by the therapist asking
questions in the first key point to connect to the client.
Therapists can use a technique to invite the client to co-construct a desired future and use their
past strengths and success to make their preferred future a reality.
SFBT IMPORTANT ELEMENTS ACCORDING TO TREPPER, 2010):
1. HAVING A THERAPEUTIC ALLIANCE
2. FOCUSING ON SOLUTIONS RATHER THAN PROBLEM SOLVING.
3. MEASURABLE GOALS
4. FOCUSING ON THE DESIRED FUTURE
5. PROGRESS OF GOALS AND PROGRESS MADE.
6. “FOCUSING THE CONVERSATION ON EXCEPTIONS TO THE CLIENT’S
PROBLEMS” (TREPPER, 2010).
SBFT MAIN INTERVENTIONS:
•A positive, respectful, solution-focused approach. Therapists have a strong belief that most clients have
the ability to effect change by having strength and wisdom.
•SFBT therapist will look for solutions that have worked in the past.
•Another main intervention is looking at exceptions such as a thought regarding when a problem could
have occurred but did not. An exception is something that happens instead of the problem regardless of
intent or understanding.
•Questions vs. directives or interpretations. Asking questions is an important piece to communication.
Therapists will use questions to navigating interventions without interpretation for the client.
•Present- and future-focused questions vs. past-oriented focus.
•Using compliments to validate the clients is an important intervention to encourage clients to continue
their progress.
•Encouraging the client to continue making changes that they have brought up. “It is rare for an SFBT
therapist to make a suggestion or assignment that is not based on the client’s previous solutions or
exceptions” (Trepper, 2010, p 5).
Used to have the client evaluated their progress.
“The therapist will use the Miracle Question’s Scale: From 0-10 or from 1-10, where 0 means
when the initial appointment was arranged and 10 means the day after the miracle, where are
things now” (Trepper, 2010, p 9).
Using this tool is great as it creates an ongoing measurement of progress.
Using the tool allows for the clients to document their changes such as thing getting better,
staying the same or getting worse.
SCALING QUESTIONS
The SFBT therapist spends most of the session listening to solutions that have worked previously,
exceptions and goals that the client wishes to obtain.
Coping questions can be used when the problem is not better. (Trepper, 2010, p 11).
1. “How have you managed to prevent it from getting worse? “
2. “This sounds hard – How are you managing to cope with this to the degree that you are?”
SOLUTIONS AND EXCEPTIONS
1. History and philosophy of SFBT
2. Basic tenets of SFBT
3. Session format and structure of SFBT
4. Video examples of “Masters” of SFBT
5. Format of SFBT
6. Video examples of SFBT
7. Role playing
8. Practice with video feedback
9. Training with video feedback
