2. Gold Rush In 1848, a treaty was made in which California became a part of U.S. territory. Workers building a sawmill in the newly acquired territory of California, happened to find pieces of gold in the river bed. Rumors were spread that there was gold in the west, when rumors made it to the east coast most people headed for California. Some gold was then shipped to Washington where later the rumor was then known as a fact.
3. Declaration of admission Settlers in California decided to create their own order in California. The settlers then later created a state constitution and demanded California admission as a state. Most of the forty-niners wanted slavery banned in their newly announced state. The reason for banned slavery is because rich people owning slaves would easily be able to excavate gold with their slaves.
4. Acceptance California was accepted as a state and was also allowed to ban slavery within the state. Henry Clay announced a comprise in which California must return slaves if they ever runaway to California. This new compromise did not only apply to California but to all free states.
