2. BEFORE READING STRATEGY
MAKE PREDICTIONS
I chose to use the making predictions strategy
before we read the book. This is where the
student will preview the title, bold words, and
pictures. I feel that this was a good strategy to
use because she is in 1st grade and at this age
they tend to use pictures all the time to predict
what a story will be about.
3. FACILITATION SESSION RECORD SHEET
BEFORE READING
Student Name: Hollie Miller
Little: Vashti Mills
Date: 4/13/16
Reading Strategy: Making predictions
Goals: To understand why we should make predictions and how to look at specific
parts in the book to be able to guess what the story is about.
Activities: We took the book and read the title together and she started flipping
through the pages to look at all the pictures.
Observations during the lesson:
• she seemed confused as to why we were previewing the book and not jumping
right to reading the book.
• After I explained the process to her she continued to preview.
• She seemed interested in the book and asked questions about the characters.
Reflections about the lesson:
• I noticed that at first she wanted to jump into reading right away.
• I think she seemed more interested to read this book because she made
predictions and wanted to see if they were right.
Future Recommendations:
• In the future I would like to explain first what previewing means and why we do it,
instead of stopping after she was confused to then explain.
4. DURING READING STRATEGY
Table Talk
I chose to use the table talk strategy during the
reading. This is where the student turn and talk
to someone, which in this case was me, and tell
them about the reading so far. I feel that this
was a good strategy to use because in 1st grade
I think students have a tough time reading or
listening to a book and actually paying attention
and comprehending everything that is being
read.
5. FACILITATION SESSION RECORD SHEET
DURING READING
Student Name: Hollie Miller
Little: Vashti Mills
Date: 4/13/16
Reading Strategy: Table Talk
Goals: To understand why we should stop and reflect on what we read and why
it is important to do this.
Activities: We stopped in the middle of the book and talked about what was
happening in the story like the conflict and characters.
Observations during the lesson:
• She seemed to have a lot to say at this point and I could tell that she was
enjoying this book.
• While she was talking to me she seemed excited and happy for me to hear
what she had to say.
Reflections about the lesson:
• I noticed that she remembered a lot of what we read.
• I also think she seemed excited to keep reading and find out if the other fish
will talk to rainbow fish.
Future Recommendations:
• In the future I would maybe like to have few questions set aside to ask
although she did do a great job covering the important details from the story.
6. AFTER READING STRATEGY
Graphic Organizer
I chose to have her make a graphic organizers for
our after reading strategy. I had my little make a
character web about rainbow fish because this
fish went through many different feelings and
behaviors in this book . I feel that this was a
good strategy to use because in 1st grade I think
students have a tough time being able to really
express themselves and understanding how
your feelings and actions affect other people.
7. FACILITATION SESSION RECORD SHEET
AFTER READING
Student Name: Hollie Miller
Little: Vashti Mills
Date: 4/13/16
Reading Strategy: Character Web (graphic organizer
Goals: To understand why we do activities at the end of the book and to
understand how important reading comprehension is.
Activities: We finished the book but continued to talk about it while she created a
character web
Observations during the lesson:
• Vashti told me that she has never made a character web.
• At first she didn’t understand exactly what was suppose to be put in the
bubbles but after explaining and giving examples she was able to come up
with her own.
Reflections about the lesson:
• I noticed that she was able to understand and come up with many different
character traits.
• I also think she enjoyed writing them in the bubble and getting to do this
activity 1 on 1.
Future Recommendations:
• In the future I would either make a word bank of words she could choose
from or give more examples.
