The document discusses the evolution of cloud computing and its increasing adoption. It outlines key cloud service models including Infrastructure as a Service, Platform as a Service, and Software as a Service. The document also notes that video traffic will account for 91% of global consumer internet traffic by 2013. Cloud computing provides opportunities for flexible delivery of both business and consumer services virtually. However, operating cloud services requires careful planning and optimization across the entire lifecycle from design to ongoing operations.
There is growing discussion in many organizations on monetizing data, not only as a revenue source, but as a balance sheet item. John will cover some of the new and more interesting methods being kicked around for measuring data as an asset.
The document discusses the value of data and how matching niche products to customers can shift business from primarily selling a small number of popular products ("the head") to generating more sales from a large number of less popular products ("the long tail"). It notes that making all products available to all consumers and using data to help match products and customers can help move business further toward the long tail. The value of data lies in iteratively implementing personalized shopping experiences for customers on a scalably platform using data to provide recommendations, search results, and customer feedback.

Zero to one by Peter Thiel, Resume of book graphs Stefania DRUGA
Today I started and finished "Zero to One: Notes on startups, or How to Build the Future" by Peter Thiel and Blake Masters.
As the book is very well structures and has several schematics and graphs I took a a couple of notes which I decided to share here and on my blog in order to invite people to comment on them.
This summary reflects the main points that were interesting for me and should not be seen as a complete summary of the book.
The Chief Data Officer Agenda: Metrics for Information and Data ManagementDATAVERSITY
Welcome to The Chief Data Officer Agenda, a DATAVERSITY monthly webinar focused on the emerging priorities of the Chief Data Officer (CDO). What issues are CDOs facing now, and what should be on their Agenda. The webinar series is moderated by DATAVERSITY CEO and Founder, Tony Shaw, who will be joined each month by guest experts to discuss the requirements and demands on the burgeoning CDO role.
This month in the series:
The value proposition of enterprise information management is founded on Information being treated as an Asset. Information management professionals concur, but CxOs will say "So what?" In most organizations, they are both right! The conflict starts with one group thinking metaphorically, and the other literally. CDOs know that “Information asset” needs to be more than a metaphor…it has to be actionable. When you’re in charge of the application and value of data, how do you measure that? How do you measure progress? What types of metrics are there and which ones actually work? There is a lot more to measuring the value of information than common ROI.
This presentation will give you some starting points for real information asset management and information economics. You’ll learn some of the techniques being used successfully today, and considerations for quantifying the value and progress of information management. There is a means of reconciliation between the metaphors and reality, and this talk will outline a vision for the future, but with practical steps to help you get there.

The document discusses Peter Thiel and his views which differ from typical Silicon Valley mentality. It highlights that Thiel believes in pursuing bold ideas that can create monopolies rather than incremental improvements. He thinks competitive markets destroy profits and that sales are as important as products. The document also discusses what makes a good startup idea, the importance of having the right team, and doing "something impossible" by starting small and dominating a market.
In today’s world, technology changes at a breakneck speed. What was new this morning is outdated at lunch. Working in the AWS Cloud is no different. Every week, AWS announces new features or improvements to current products. As AWS technologists, we must assimilate these new technologies and make decisions to adopt, reject, or defer. These decisions can be overwhelming: we tend to either reject everything and become stagnant, or adopt everything and never get our project out the door. In this session we will discuss the attitude of iteration. The attitude of iteration allows us to face the challenges of change without overwhelming our technical teams with a constant tug-o-war between implementation and improvement. Whether you’re an architect, engineer, developer, or AWS newbie, prepare to laugh, cry, and commiserate as we talk about overcoming these challenges. Session sponsored by Rackspace.
Strategic inflection points refer to times when the fundamentals of a business are about to change, potentially creating opportunities or risks. They can be caused by actions from within a company or external forces. Identifying these points involves analyzing customer relationships, business models, markets and profitability. Tools like organizational value quadrants and profit mapping help recognize problem areas and potential inflection points. Adaptation to inevitable change is critical for corporate survival.

This poses challenges for CIOs in managing network traffic and costs. However, an intelligent network that can adapt to users' needs can help CIOs satisfy users while focusing on innovation. Such a network is described as being able to distribute content efficiently, enable application development, and anticipate future business requirements. This could allow the CIO to take on more strategic roles rather than getting bogged down in projects.

In this e-zine, we’ve assembled fresh thinking and ideas about the solutions and services that create revenue opportunities and support emerging business models for providers.
Microsoft Telecommunications Newsletter | May 2021Rick Lievano
In almost every conversation, I’m astounded by the amount of folks who mention the recent disruption that’s occurred in this industry. As the old adage goes: “…the only constant has been change.” Digital disruption has fueled digital transformation, and with the proliferation of companies offering broader arrays of services, enterprises are scrambling to keep up and offer newer and better things.
There’s been major consolidation across Telco and Media, and the fight for audience and revenue is more fierce than ever. As we have seen in these last few weeks, there have been industry changing merger talks between Warner Media and Discovery, Bouygues and M6 Groupe from Bertelsmann, and even Amazon and MGM. While we’re proud and confident in our most recent acquisitions, it’s safe to say that the competition is heating up.
Vendor hype has devalued the promise of unified communications and threatens to cause confusion with the move to cloud computing. In the absence of clear and unambiguous explanations of the benefits of embarking on such projects, end users could be forgiven for thinking that these are technologies without a purpose. However, a revolution is underway, bringing with it real benefits to enterprises and to workers.
This document discusses the growing demand for data storage and how it has transformed traditional data centers into mega data centers. It notes how organizations are relying more on their own large data centers rather than many smaller ones. Data center service providers are working to improve energy efficiency through strategies like locating in cold areas to reduce cooling needs and adopting new technologies. Looking ahead, global data center electricity demand is expected to increase substantially and account for 13% of total global electricity consumption by 2030 if growth continues, highlighting the importance of sustainability in the industry. The cover story profiles DigiPlex, a Nordic leader in innovative and sustainable data centers that aims to deliver high quality services while using only renewable energy sources.
Cloud computing offers organizations scalability, flexibility, and speed while reducing costs. However, issues around security, data privacy, and regulatory compliance need to be addressed. While some organizations are piloting cloud computing services, widespread adoption is still 1-2 years away as only 10-30% of IT budgets are expected to be used for cloud services in the near future. Overall cloud computing has the potential to significantly change how IT services are delivered and used by businesses.

Businesses held back by their inability to exploit their data (Infographic)Jeff Spencer
A recent survey carried out by Bull Information Systems, polling the views of 100 senior business decision-makers across the UK, has revealed that a large majority of organisations are still struggling to respond to requests for data analytics.
"Ultimately, big data, high-performance analytics or whatever term we attach to the results of this survey, has to enable a business or agency to gain insight into their customers; if it doesn't deliver that then I would question why not" commented Andrew Carr, CEO Bull UK & Ireland.
"Data should be used to gain business advantage and now is the time for businesses to put the power of analytics into the hands of their key decision makers."

This document discusses big data and fast data solutions. It presents four case studies: 1) how Tesco uses customer shopping data to tailor product offerings, 2) using real-time health analytics to monitor patients, 3) how cities are using diverse data sources to improve services, and 4) analyzing social media during the 2011 London riots to understand the spread of information. Each case study highlights the characteristics of the problem domain and suitable technical approaches for batch or real-time processing, storage needs, and speed priorities. The conclusion emphasizes that while big data solutions are common, fast data solutions that can process streaming data in milliseconds are still challenging but important to solve problems involving real-time analytics.
