I gave this talk at York University's Faculty of Science Science Communication Workshop on Wednesday December 7 2016. I review some research about how scientists use social media and suggest ways that scientists can practice communicating science.
David Nicholas Digital Consumers Implications For Libraries
This document summarizes research on digital consumer behaviors and their implications for libraries. It finds that consumers prefer simple search via Google, are promiscuous in their information seeking by browsing many sources briefly and not returning, view information horizontally by skimming many sources rather than reading deeply, and want immersive social information environments. The combination of openness, truth and community can optimize scientific processes and outputs.
Information symposium
The two-day Intelligent Information Symposium in May 2012 in Sydney featured workshops and keynote speakers on topics related to the future of libraries and information professionals. Day 1 included workshops on preparing for multiple futures and disruptive forces that may impact libraries by 2018-2025. Day 2 consisted of keynote speeches on engaging customers online, failing productively to drive learning, and envisioning post-print libraries, as well as intensive sessions on social media strategies and connecting clients to resources. Going Mobile and Social at Bedfordshire University

2) Research shows that multitasking with technology like social media during class is correlated with lower academic performance.
3) Computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) has historical ties to other fields and aims to support collaboration and cooperation between learners, with interaction seen as a key element of learning.

Web 2.0 tools like Google Docs, Twitter, blogs, podcasts and Diigo can be incorporated into social studies classrooms. These tools allow students to collaborate, share information, and engage in discussions. Google Docs allows students to create and store documents online. Twitter can be used for polls, debates and reporting findings. Blogs and podcasts enable students to respond to events, review documents and create historical narratives. Diigo is a social bookmarking tool for group research and organizing information. Using these Web 2.0 tools can help teach students in new innovative ways.

This presentation was shared at the opening keynote at the Martin Institute's Fall 2010 conference in Memphis, Tennessee. Much of the world has gone digital, so must learning at school. Creativity is vital, and good leadership matters. Stagnant, accomodation-level technology integration makes technology investments in our schools a waste of money. School leaders can and should encourage teachers to use digital learning tools in transformative ways to open new doors of opportunity for students as well as parents. By focusing on creating, communicating / sharing, and collaborating, principals can help develop a shared instructional vocabularly with teachers which is focused on student engagement. Without creation, there can be no creativity. How will you let your students create? How will you give students choices? How will your students teach the curriculum? These are essential questions to ask together with teachers, as we seek to effectively (and legally) "talk with media / pictures" and leverage the constructive power of digital media tools for learning inside and outside the classroom.

The use of the new information and communication technologies (ICTs) has speedily increased during the last 20 years. They have led us to a new global citizenship, a new way of thinking and even a new way of behaving, which have influenced all knowledge fields, including education. As a matter of fact, UNESCO’s ICT Competency Standards for Teachers (2008) recently pointed out that both students and teachers must utilize technology effectively in order to live, learn, and work successfully in an increasingly complex, information-rich and knowledge-based society. Students have new ways to access information and learn; they have naturally developed cognitive skills that make the use of digital technology much easier. Thus, they are called ‘the net generation’ or 'digital natives', people who have grown up with technology, mainly Internet (Prensky, 2001). Consequently, teachers have to develop digital competences to satisfy the demands of that new generation. Making the teaching-learning process more effective, interesting, dynamic, updated and adapted to the new learning times is a must for us. This presentation will offer an overview of digital literacy and a basic training on powerful Web 2.0 tools (blogs, wikis, podcasts, social networking, etc) to enhance the ELT teaching practice.
