Buddhism is a religion and philosophy based on the teachings of Buddha, who realized that life is full of suffering and sought lasting happiness. At age 29, he left his luxurious life to meditate and attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in India. He then taught others the Four Noble Truths about suffering and its causes, and the Eightfold Path to end suffering through right view, intention, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, and concentration. Buddhism spread across Asia with various schools and practices absorbing local traditions, all seeking the nirvana of enlightenment through abstaining from harm, meditation, and chanting.
