Gorge Owned, a nonprofit organization with a small staff and many volunteers, had a significant impact in their community through various sustainability programs over the past year. They hosted over 24 educational events attended by more than 1,300 people, promoted energy efficiency improvements that saved homeowners an average of 31% on energy bills, diverted over 300,000 pounds of waste from landfills through cleanup events, and supported the local economy through initiatives like their GO Local campaign that helped 75 businesses increase sales by over $120,000. They also promoted renewable energy adoption, cultivated youth leadership, and celebrated local sustainability leaders.
Transforming global landscapes
Rapid land transformation driven by large scale investments is one of the big trends defining this century. In a virtual briefing for the Global Donor Platform members CIAT agriculture expert Deborah Bossio dismisses the cry for more investments often heard in development circles. From her perspective a lack of investments is not the problem. The more pressing question is whether these large scale investments could be sustainable and socially inclusive. How are they going to play out in the end?
Another emerging feature, according to Bossio, is the dominance of globalization as well as foreign income and international trade as major drivers of land use change. Taking a closer look at these dynamics shows that we aim at achieving multiple goals (sustaining communities, produce goods, store carbon, protect wildlife, sustain biodiversity, ecosystem services). The landscapes approach provides a vehicle for realizing those objectives.
After outlining the reasons behind choosing landscapes approaches, Deborah rounds off with introducing specifics of CIAT’s landscapes approach.
Deborah Bossio is the director of soils research area at CIAT. She is based in Nairobi, Kenya, and has more than 15 years experience working in sustainable agriculture development research.

The program offers rebates and incentives for homeowners who work with approved landscape professionals to install a qualifying Localscapes design. It is partnering with various organizations and growing a network of landscape designers, contractors, and retailers to promote water-efficient landscaping.

The health of American rivers is essential to the communities and environments that depend on the beneficial ecosystem services provided. Historic impacts from mining, dams, and a variety of land use practices have left many river environments and riverside communities with a legacy of polluted waterways, erosion, and habitat degradation. With an increasing need to address river health it is essential to engage young adults in this work to conserve and preserve these resources for the future. Through emerging opportunities, young adults can learn skills, gain understanding, and physically work to restore and protect river systems. Programs- like those of the Southwest Conservation Corps- are working with partners to engage this population in various ways, providing much needed job training and education through stewardship.
Michael Rendon will present on Southwest Conservation Corp’s Environmental Stewards program, highlighting past successes and engagement models for DOI Bureaus and non-profits interested in obtaining a Steward. Showcased will be Inyo County’s work on the Lower Owens River Project, along with a Sturgeon habitat restoration project with the USGS Great Lakes Science Center that was nominated for the 2013 Secretary of the Interior Partners in Conservation Award.
Mike Wight will discuss collaborative work with corps programs and partnerships furthering multi-year, watershed-length habitat restoration initiatives on major tributaries in the Colorado River Basin. Word crews and interns provide much of the hands-on restoration implementation within these initiatives after completing comprehensive training.
In all three of these programs, participants foster a respect for river systems while gaining valuable work experience and building resumes for future conservation careers.
The Southwest Conservation Corps empowers individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities, and the environment.
Land steward project

This study examines the potential impacts of climate change on water resources and agriculture in Egypt by 2050 using the latest climate models. It finds that temperatures are projected to increase by 2-3.2°C on average, which could reduce crop yields for many crops significantly, including a 7-17% decline for maize, rice, and wheat. Adaptation through investments in heat-tolerant seed varieties, soil fertility management, and crop protection could help offset some impacts and increase production levels above a no climate change scenario. The health of American rivers is essential to the communities and environments that depend on the beneficial ecosystem services provided. Historic impacts from mining, dams, and a variety of land use practices have left many river environments and riverside communities with a legacy of polluted waterways, erosion, and habitat degradation. With an increasing need to address river health it is essential to engage young adults in this work to conserve and preserve these resources for the future. Through emerging opportunities, young adults can learn skills, gain understanding, and physically work to restore and protect river systems. Programs- like those of the Southwest Conservation Corps- are working with partners to engage this population in various ways, providing much needed job training and education through stewardship.
Michael Rendon will present on Southwest Conservation Corp’s Environmental Stewards program, highlighting past successes and engagement models for DOI Bureaus and non-profits interested in obtaining a Steward. Showcased will be Inyo County’s work on the Lower Owens River Project, along with a Sturgeon habitat restoration project with the USGS Great Lakes Science Center that was nominated for the 2013 Secretary of the Interior Partners in Conservation Award.
Mike Wight will discuss collaborative work with corps programs and partnerships furthering multi-year, watershed-length habitat restoration initiatives on major tributaries in the Colorado River Basin. Word crews and interns provide much of the hands-on restoration implementation within these initiatives after completing comprehensive training.
In all three of these programs, participants foster a respect for river systems while gaining valuable work experience and building resumes for future conservation careers.
The Southwest Conservation Corps empowers individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities, and the environment.

The popularity of functional foods among scientists and common people has been increasing day by day. Awareness and modernization make the consumer think better regarding food and nutrition. Now a day’s individual knows very well about the relation between food consumption and disease prevalence. Humans have a diversity of microbes in the gut that together form the gut microflora. Probiotics are the health-promoting live microbial cells improve host health through gut and brain connection and fighting against harmful bacteria. Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus are the two bacterial genera which are considered to be probiotic. These good bacteria are facing challenges of viability. There are so many factors such as sensitivity to heat, pH, acidity, osmotic effect, mechanical shear, chemical components, freezing and storage time as well which affects the viability of probiotics in the dairy food matrix as well as in the gut. Multiple efforts have been done in the past and ongoing in present for these beneficial microbial population stability until their destination in the gut. One of a useful technique known as microencapsulation makes the probiotic effective in the diversified conditions and maintain these microbe’s community to the optimum level for achieving targeted benefits. Dairy products are found to be an ideal vehicle for probiotic incorporation. It has been seen that the encapsulated microbial cells show higher viability than the free cells in different processing and storage conditions as well as against bile salts in the gut. They make the food functional when incorporated, without affecting the product sensory characteristics.

The incorporation of a 3DCSM and completion of HRSC provided a tool for enhanced, data-driven, decisions to support a change in remediation closure strategies. Currently, an approved pilot study has been obtained to shut-down the remediation systems (ISCO, P&T) and conduct a hydraulic study under non-pumping conditions. A separate micro-biological bench scale treatability study was competed that yielded positive results for an emerging innovative technology. As a result, a field pilot study has commenced with results expected in nine-twelve months. With the results of the hydraulic study, field pilot studies and an updated risk assessment leading site monitoring optimization cost lifecycle savings upwards of $15MM towards an alternatively evolved best available technology remediation closure strategy.

Water polluted by dyestuffs compounds is a global threat to health and the environment; accordingly, we prepared a green novel sorbent chemical and Physical system from an algae, chitosan and chitosan nanoparticle and impregnated with algae with chitosan nanocomposite for the sorption of Malachite green dye from water. The algae with chitosan nanocomposite by a simple method and used as a recyclable and effective adsorbent for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions. Algae, chitosan, chitosan nanoparticle and algae with chitosan nanocomposite were characterized using different physicochemical methods. The functional groups and chemical compounds found in algae, chitosan, chitosan algae, chitosan nanoparticle, and chitosan nanoparticle with algae were identified using FTIR, SEM, and TGADTA/DTG techniques. The optimal adsorption conditions, different dosages, pH and Temperature the amount of algae with chitosan nanocomposite were determined. At optimized conditions and the batch equilibrium studies more than 99% of the dye was removed. The adsorption process data matched well kinetics showed that the reaction order for dye varied with pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of the algae with chitosan nanocomposite toward malachite green dye reached as high as 15.5mg/g, respectively. Finally, multiple times reusing of algae with chitosan nanocomposite and removing dye from a real wastewater has made it a promising and attractive option for further practical applications.
Optimizing Post Remediation Groundwater Performance with Enhanced Microbiolog...
Results of geophysics and pneumatic injection pilot tests during 2003 – 2007 yielded significant positive results for injection delivery design and contaminant mass treatment, resulting in permanent shut-down of an existing groundwater Pump & Treat system.
Accessible source areas were subsequently removed (2011) by soil excavation and treated with the placement of Emulsified Vegetable Oil EVO and zero-valent iron ZVI to accelerate treatment of impacted groundwater in overburden and weathered fractured bedrock. Post pilot test and post remediation groundwater monitoring has included analyses of CVOCs, organic fatty acids, dissolved gases and QuantArray® -Chlor to quantify key microorganisms (e.g., Dehalococcoides, Dehalobacter, etc.) and functional genes (e.g., vinyl chloride reductase, methane monooxygenase, etc.) to assess potential for reductive dechlorination and aerobic cometabolism of CVOCs.
In 2022, the first commercial application of MetaArray™ was performed at the site. MetaArray™ utilizes statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis and multivariate analysis to provide evidence that reductive dechlorination is active or even that it is slowing. This creates actionable data allowing users to save money by making important site management decisions earlier.
The results of the MetaArray™ analysis’ support vector machine (SVM) identified groundwater monitoring wells with a 80% confidence that were characterized as either Limited for Reductive Decholorination or had a High Reductive Reduction Dechlorination potential. The results of MetaArray™ will be used to further optimize the site’s post remediation monitoring program for monitored natural attenuation.
