Editor's Notes

  • #4 Improve performance Increase citizen satisfaction Promote public confidence Framework for sustainability in the planning stages
  • #5 CINDY CIRCO The Envision program can be the vehicle for on-going coordination efforts to help achieve the City’s sustainability goals and focus on targeted objectives. I first began this push for collaboration and coordination as part of Water Services’ Middle Blue River Basin Green Solutions Pilot Project. For over a year, I met on a regular basis with public works, planning, neighborhood and housing, parks, MGE, and other stakeholders, stressing the importance of communication and coordination through the project’s construction to ensure that we were providing the maximum benefit to our customers.
  • #6 CINDY CIRCO My hope is that the collaboration and coordination will continue by applying the Envision program throughout all city departments. The Envision program will act as a guide to address triple bottom line sustainability dimensions in the design, construction, and operation of an infrastructure project. My support for this program is shown by the fact that I went through the process of becoming certified as an Envision™ Sustainability Professional. In doing so, I became one of the first elected officials in the nation to become accredited.
  • #7 Kansas City’s first step to implementing Envision began before the program was even developed. A city policy was developed to encourage greater user of sustainability measures. With Envision, sustainability is now being addressed in the solicitation of design consultant services through the RFQ/P process. This will ask for the incorporation of sustainability throughout Design, Construction, and operation and maintenance of Facilities
  • #8 Kansas City’s Commitment to Envision starts with goals and implementation. For Kansas City Water Services, a public sector agency member, these goals include: Developing standard RFQ/P language Developing standard language for scopes Developing overall protocols Establishing an Envision specialist(s) within city or department staff Updating standard details and specifications Certifying 1 external project by 2016 Certifying 1 internal project by 2016 Updating protocols for communications plan Developing protocols for internal projects Approaching all Water Services projects using the Envision philosophy, knowing that not all projects will be certified and that some projects (e.g., reactive, emergency) should not be able to go through the Envision process This is an exciting program that I am proud to be a part of and I look forward to applying it here in Kansas City.
