Nearly half of total U.S. water withdrawals are used for power plant cooling, amounting to 201 billion gallons per day. Irrigation accounts for 31% of freshwater withdrawals, while public supply and industrial/mining use 11% and 6% respectively. Producing and delivering energy requires significant amounts of water, while supplying water demands large amounts of energy, demonstrating the close linkage between water and energy resources and policies.
