Broiler Management
Broiler Farming
• Broiler farm is a project of livestock sector in which
day old chicks are raised for a period of 6 weeks.
Annually 6 flocks can be raised on the same farm
Opportunity rationale
• Cheapest source of protein, less time required than
that big animal
• Per capita consumption of poultry meat at the rate 4
%/ anum
• Existing daily protein availability in pakistan with fish
11 gm
• Daily requirement is 27 gm for one person according
to WHO
Current Industry Structure
• The generation line of broiler come from pure line
• Farmer buy the day old chicks from reliable
hatcheries
• Poultry feed mills are major player in the poultry
industry
• The major cast of production of chicken meat
accounts for feeding cast
Management
Day old Chicks
• Should be uniform in size, active, alert, bright eye, and
shiny body
• Brooding
• Proper brooding temperature require to comfort the chicks,
coal or saw dust is burnt for supplying heat at brooding
• In first week 4-5 time observe the temperature in a day
and set the temperature at 95 F
• Chicks should not huddle or move away from brooder, but
should move around evenly. As chicks grow, temperature
may be reduced at the rate of 5 F until 70 F is reached in 6th
week.
Management
Feeding
• Two type of feed available in market
• Broiler starter feed up to 5 weeks
• Finisher feed more than 5 weeks and continue till the
age of marketing
• Always feed 3-4 time in a day that will stimulate the
feed intake and prevent the wastage
Housing
• Kept bird in a clean and dry place and well ventilated
room. Provide fresh air and carries of moisture.
Management
Feeder
• Essential to provide adequate feeder space one pan type
feeder is enough for 50 birds
Lighting
• 24 hour lighting is required in brooding and early growing
period. Initially 1st
15 days light intensity 40-60 watts per
200 square feet of space and this can be replaced 15 watts
bulb in the binging of 3rd
week
Drinker
• Should contain fresh clean and cold water in summer
• Provide extra water in summer. One drinker is sufficient for
50 birds.
Management
Litter
• Spread on floor to avoid direct contact of chicks
with floor, rice husk or saw dust used as litter
• Litter should be free of molds
• Use new litter for each flock
Vaccination
• Vaccinate the bird to prevent the diseases
through injection, mix in water and eye drop
average cast of vaccine is 2-5 RS/ bird
Management
Fumigation and spraying
• Check all equipment and wall are clean and washed
with disinfectant solution.
• Room should be white washed before arrival of
chicks
• Fumigation of shed before arrival of chicks
• A solution of NaOH with warm water can be used to
clean the house and equipment
Management
Man Power Requirement
• Semiskilled worker needed for feeding, vaccination
and cleaning.
• A single person can handle 3000 bird easily
• You may also hire supervisor
Farm Equipment
• Brooder , heater, small feeder, large feeder
• Small drinker, large drinker
Land requirement
• Shed must have 1 square feet/bird, store room and
room for guard
Management
Suitable Location
• Rural area near city isolated place due to less
disease outbreak
• Elevated area to avoid water lodging
• Near matel road for transportation
• Market access to purchase day old chicks, farm
inputs and selling mature bird

Infrastructure Requirement
• Farm should be located at a place where
transportation of birds and feed can be
handled easily

• Should be less than 8 % by timely medication
and vaccination.

• Farm employee aware of feeding drinking and
feeding hobbits of birds
• Supervisor must be vigilant and ensure timely
feeding and vaccination so that bird stay healthy
and disease free.

• Should aware of supply and demand of chicken in
the city. This will help to negotiate well the sale
price of bird. The price fluctuate tremendously
during a year
Threats
• Poultry industry has some inheriting issue
which can be controlled by individual
enterpanure.
• Disease Epidemic
• Disease like ND extremely dangerous. They
can eradicate entire bird population. So bird
should protect with vaccination and
medication
