This document discusses roof support in underground coal mines. There are two main types of roof support: intrinsic supports like roof bolts that are installed within the roof, and standing supports like timber props that are installed between the roof and floor. Timber supports are commonly used in Indian coal mines due to low cost and availability, though metal supports offer higher load capacity. A case study examines how roof bolts were used with a specific layout and spacing in the Tandshi coal mine in India. Proper roof support is necessary to prevent roof collapse and protect miners from rock falls.
1) The document discusses conventional support systems used in underground mining including timber and cog supports.
2) Timber props are commonly used but have disadvantages like decay over time and lower load bearing capacity compared to steel. Their load capacity can be calculated based on height and diameter.
3) Cog supports have a square structure with legs spaced 1.2m apart and can bear loads up to 30 tons, acting as a stronger alternative to timber supports.
This document discusses different types of rock bolts used in underground mining excavations. It describes mechanically anchored, grouted anchor, and frictional anchor bolts. Mechanically anchored bolts use an expansion shell or resin to anchor into the rock. Grouted anchor bolts are inserted into a borehole and cemented in place with resin or cement. Frictional bolts like split sets are forced into an undersized hole to provide support. The document also outlines the unconfined compression test procedure used to evaluate rock strength in a laboratory.

Rockbolts and dowels are used to support underground excavations. Rockbolts are tensioned steel rods anchored with mechanical anchors or resin, while dowels are untensioned steel bars grouted into rock. Different support methods are used depending on rock mass properties and stress levels, ranging from spot bolts to heavy bolting patterns with mesh and shotcrete. Mechanically anchored rockbolts work via expansion shells, while resin-anchored bolts provide stronger anchoring, especially in weak rock. Hollow core bolts and resin grouting provide more reliable permanent support by filling the annular space to prevent corrosion.
This document discusses types of compaction equipment used in construction projects, including static steel wheel rollers, pneumatic rubber-tired rollers, and vibratory rollers. It describes how each type of roller compacts materials through applied contact pressure and identifies key variables that impact compaction, such as roller speed, number of coverage passes, and compaction pattern. The document also explains how construction crews use test strips to establish effective rolling patterns and determine the number of coverages needed to ensure required material density is achieved.
This document discusses casing, which is large diameter pipe inserted into recently drilled boreholes and cemented in place. Casing serves several important purposes in the well construction process, including preventing contamination, cave-ins, and blowouts. Proper casing design considers formation pressures and strengths to determine optimal casing depths and diameters. Wells typically include multiple casing intervals of progressively smaller diameter to reach total depth. Casing is run and cemented in stages to safely drill to target depths.

26. Temporary Bridging
Our comprehensive modular bridging product range, vast
engineering skills and our experience in rapid bridge installation
makes us unique, and earns us the worldwide reputation of
being a reliable bridging supplier and engineering partner.
27. 27
Mabey Quickbridges are a modular “off the shelf” solution to bridging
requirements. Available in both footbridge and road formats,
Quickbridges can be used for pedestrian or vehicular traffic, on public
highways or construction sites for both temporary and permanent
applications.
Quickbridge units are delivered to site complete with parapets
and anti-skid surfacing ready to lift directly from the vehicle onto
prepared bases. The simplicity of this operation, together with the
minimal end depth provided by the Quickbridge to reduce ramping
requirements, can reduce installation time and cost.
Units are available in two formats - Flat Top and Rollover; the latter
minimising structure depth for over-bridging applications. A range
of standard spans from 6m to 20m are available in both Quickbridge
types.

Quickbridge Types
Flat Top Quickbridges are designed
in a traditional “fish belly” format.
The units are ideal for either
single or multi span applications
spanning any obstruction where
the unit’s depth can be easily
accommodated.
Rollover Quickbridges are
available in the same span range
and unit widths as the Flat Top
unit but is particularly useful
where clearance to the underside
of the bridge is important in
applications such as over bridging
where existing structures are
awaiting or undergoing repair or
strengthening.
Quickbridge Footbridge units
have extended the modular rapid
deployment principals of the
road unit and applied them to
a footbridge. The footbridge is
available in 6m to 12m units that
can be spliced together to provide
18m and 24m bridges.

30. 30 Temporary Bridging
Our panel bridging systems can be delivered to site in component
form, allowing the construction of major structures in areas of
restricted access. The bridging systems can be assembled quickly and
safely using a small crane. Final positioning of the structure can be
carried out by cantilever launch from one side, pushing the bridge out
on rollers and landing on a far bank or by building a skeletal structure
and lifting it into position.
Mabey panel bridges can be designed economically for highways
loadings, heavy off-road earth moving vehicles or pedestrian use.
Mabey panel bridge systems are in use throughout the world in both
temporary and permanent applications. Mabey offers these proven
bridging systems together with many years of engineering and
installation experience in the UK market.
