1498 → Vasco De Gama came to India. (Calicut)
1526 → Mughal Empire started.
1595 → Dutch Arrived at Pulicat.
1608 → English arrived at Surat.
→ With a charter from Queen Elizabeth I (1600).
→ Mughal Emperor was Jahangir.
1616 → Danish arrived at Tranquebar.
1651 → First English factory at Hugli.
1664 → French arrived at Pondicherry.
1696 → English started building Fort.
→ Get Mansabdari Trade Duty Free (Kolkata).
→ Huge lose for Bengal governor.
→ more over corrupted English official’s private trade made huge lose.
1707 → Aurangzeb Died → Bahadur Shah I → Jahandar Shah.
1713 → Farrukhshiyar (Subedars start declaring independence!!!) - 1719
1717 → Murshid Kuli Khan (1st Nawab of Bengal) – 1727
→ Anti English company because they didn’t pay tax.
1740 → Ali Bardi Khan – 1756.
→ Fought with Maratha.
→ also fought with English company.
1756 → Siraj Ud-Daulah – 1757.
→ Had Anti-English thoughts because they didn’t pay tax.
→ Attack Fort William, Calcutta.
→ English company sent Robert Clive to tackle the situation.
→ Clive play politics and make an agreement with Mir Jafar.
1757 → Battle of Plassey (23 June).
→ English won the war.
→ Robert Clive was made Governor of Bengal.
→ Mir Jafar became the puppet Nawab of Bengal.
1758 → Warren Hasting (Resident of Bengal)
→ make the decision who would be perfect ruler for the British company!!!
→ He was captured in 1756 by the army of Nawab Siraj.
1760 → Mir Qasim (Puppet Nawab).
→ Governor Robert Clive left India with huge wealth.
1761 → Third Panipat war; Maratha vs Ahmed Shah Abdali. (Emperor of
Durrani empire, Afganistan.
→ Maratha lost the war
1764 → Battle of Boxer.
→ British under the command of Maj. Hector Munro.
→ Mir Qasim+Shuja ud-Daulah (Nawab of Awadh) +Shah Allam II
(Mughal Emperor 1760-1806).
→ British won the war.
→ Qasim committed suicide.
→ Mir Jafar reinstalled as the Nawab of Bengal.
1765 → Robert Clive back to India.
→ Was Made Governor of Bengal.
→ Mir Jafar Died.
→ Clive wrote letter to England that theyshould make their own Nawab.
→ Clive introduce Dual System of Govt. (1765-1772)

→ Maratha Empire was crushed after this war.
1838 → First Anglo-Afghan war -1842 (English won)
1843 → British Took over Sindh.
1845 → First Anglo-Sikh War – 1846
1848 → Second Anglo-Sikh War – 1849
→ Punjab was captured by English.
Doctrine of Lapse
“If a ruler died without MALE SUCCESSOR his Kingdom would lapse”
1856 → Awadh was taken by British
→ claimed by British because of so called misrule of nawab and free the
people of Awadh!!!
→ 10th and last Nawab of Awadh Wajid Ali Shah forced to Calcutta
with the yearly pension.
1857 → The Great India Revolt (The Sepoy Mutiny)
→ India’s first Struggle for Independence.
→ End of Company rule in India.
1858 → The Government of India Act was Passed
→ Rule forwarded to British Crown.
→ Queen Victoria (Ruled 1837-1901)

Doctrine of Lapse “If a ruler died without MALE SUCCESSOR his Kingdom would lapse” 1856 → Awadh was taken by British → claimed by British because of so called misrule of nawab and free the people of Awadh!!! → 10th and last Nawab of Awadh Wajid Ali Shah forced to Calcutta with the yearly pension. 1857 → The Great India Revolt (The Sepoy Mutiny) → India’s first Struggle for Independence. → End of Company rule in India. 1858 → The Government of India Act was Passed → Rule forwarded to British Crown. → Queen Victoria (Ruled 1837-1901) Part One Ends
