1) The study examined the impact of farm-based learning experiences on youth agricultural literacy in North Carolina. Surveys assessed changes in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of 170 students who participated in farm field trips, either with or without supplemental classroom lessons. 2) The results showed that both treatment groups experienced significant gains in agricultural knowledge. Students who participated in field trips and lessons saw greater improvements in attitudes toward local food systems compared to field trips only. 3) The study provides preliminary support for using agritourism-based field trips and supplemental classroom activities to increase youth agricultural literacy. Larger samples and longer-term data collection are needed to better understand impacts.
