2. INTRODUCTION
• This research proposal is intended to investigate the various factors
that shape dietary patterns, food habits and preference.
• By scrutinizing the intersection of lifestyle, cultural influences, and
nutritional awareness, the study seeks to contribute to a
comprehensive understanding of these dynamics for the betterment
of health promotion strategies.
3. BACKGROUND OF STUDY
College life marks a crucial period where individuals establish lifelong
habits, including dietary choices. Understanding the dietary habits,
food choices, and preferences among college girls is imperative for
promoting overall health and well-being, shedding light on the
factors influencing dietary behaviors among college-aged females.
4. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Unhealthy dietary habits are among factors that can have adverse
effects on health status of young adults( college students). College
students tend to practice poor eating habits e.g skipping meals, low
frequency of vegetables fruits and protein consumption.98.1%of college
students consume less than three servings of vegetables daily .
5. HYPOTHESIS
Ho: There is no significant association between socio-economic factors,
cultural background, peer influence, nutritional knowledge, and lifestyle
factors with the dietary patterns, food habits, and preferences among
college girls.
Ha: There is a significant association between at least one of the
mentioned factors (socio-economic, cultural, peer influence, nutritional
knowledge, lifestyle) and the dietary patterns, food habits, and
preferences among college girls
6. OBJECTIVES OF THE RESEARCH
Objective
• To understand the factors influencing dietary patterns, food habits
and preference among college girls in Masinde Muliro University of
Science and Technology.
Specific Objectives
1.To determine the sociodemographic status of college students in
MMUST.
2. To determine the overall nutritional intake of college students
3. To identify common dietary pattern among college students
4. To identify factors that influence food choices
7. METHODS LOGY
Study area
The research will be conducted in MMUST
Study population
The research will be on college girls
Study design
Descriptive cross-sectional study will be used
Sampling technique
I will use simple random sampling technique
Data collection instruments
I will use questionnaires and in depth interviews
Data analysis technique
Inferential Statistics will be used to analyze relationship between dietary
habits and demographic factors.
