Although the three sections of this chapter (business ethics, social responsibility, and sustainability) are distinct, the topics are quite related. Many people, for example, consider it unethical for a firm to be socially irresponsible. Social responsibility refers to actions an organization takes beyond what is legally required to protect or enhance the well-being of living things. Sustainability refers to the extent that an organization’s operations and actions protect, mend, and preserve rather than harm or destroy the natural environment. Polluting the environment, for example, is unethical, irresponsible, and in many cases illegal. Business ethics, social responsibility, and sustainability issues therefore are interrelated and impact all areas of the comprehensive strategic-management model, as illustrated in Figure 10-1 with white shading.
A sample company that adheres to the highest ethical standards and that uses excellent strategic planning and has an outstanding commitment to corporate sustainability is Apple.

The Institute of Business Ethics (IBE) recently did a study titled “Does Business Ethics Pay?” and concluded that companies displaying a “clear commitment to ethical conduct” consistently outperform companies that do not display ethical conduct. In a 2014 documentary, Apple Inc. (Apple), the California-based multinational technology company known
for its innovative hardware, software, and online services, was implicated in alleged human rights violations
at Pegatron, a large Apple supplier that specialized in the assembly of iPhones. These allegations followed
similar well-publicized violations in 2009, at Foxconn, another major Apple supplier. Although Apple had
promised to overcome these issues, the situation had clearly proven to be difficult to overturn. The case
explores Apple’s options in response to these new violations. Should it have neglected the accusations and
pointed to its existing efforts? Could it have done more? Should it perhaps have revised its offshoring and
outsourcing strategy? Was the blame attributed to Apple fair? The case offers insights into the complexity of
corporate social responsibility issues in cross-border, inter-organizational settings.
TEACHING OBJECTIVES
The case offers students the opportunity to examine in depth the challenges Apple faces in managing
offshore and outsourced operations, especially in terms of how these challenges affect corporate social
responsibility (CSR) outcomes. Set against the backdrop of two major CSR failures, Apple is possibly the
world’s best example for this purpose because of both the high expectations it faces and the plentiful
financial and other resources it has available to tackle this problem. The lessons from this case study apply
to a wide range of firms engaged in offshoring and outsourcing and to the management of CSR across

Marianne Barner needs to make a decision on behalf of IKEA regarding the accusation brought forth against Rangan Exports. She’s faced a similar scenario just one year before when she was brand new to her position as business area manager for carpets. In the months following, she studied the problem personally and recommended implementation of a revised supply agreement and the appointment of an independent auditor to monitor compliance. She thought she had IKEA’s carpet supply chain under control, so the call from the producers of the German TV documentary ousting Rangan Exports not only came as a surprise but a disappointment as well.

at Pegatron, a large Apple supplier that specialized in the assembly of iPhones. These allegations followed
similar well-publicized violations in 2009, at Foxconn, another major Apple supplier. Although Apple had
promised to overcome these issues, the situation had clearly proven to be difficult to overturn. The case
explores Apple’s options in response to these new violations. Should it have neglected the accusations and
pointed to its existing efforts? Could it have done more? Should it perhaps have revised its offshoring and
outsourcing strategy? Was the blame attributed to Apple fair? The case offers insights into the complexity of
corporate social responsibility issues in cross-border, inter-organizational settings.

The case offers students the opportunity to examine in depth the challenges Apple faces in managing
offshore and outsourced operations, especially in terms of how these challenges affect corporate social

Marianne Barner needs to make a decision on behalf of IKEA regarding the accusation brought forth against Rangan Exports. She’s faced a similar scenario just one year before when she was brand new to her position as business area manager for carpets. In the months following, she studied the problem personally and recommended implementation of a revised supply agreement and the appointment of an independent auditor to monitor compliance. She thought she had IKEA’s carpet supply chain under control, so the call from the producers of the German TV documentary ousting Rangan Exports not only came as a surprise but a disappointment as well.
Imagine you are a team of consultants, hired by Barner to help her in this situation. Based on this, answer the following questions, being mindful of calling upon evidence provided in the case.

No process is perfect; there’s always room to improve. Unfortunately, many teams have no way to identify, test, and deploy the changes they make, meaning each tweak is a roll of the dice.
The savings can be massive, but you need a continuous improvement program to make sure that the changes you make won’t make your operations a whole lot harder.

Most successful changes will also make your employee’s jobs easier (or more pleasant) to perform. You’ll be saving time and money, but you’ll also be getting far better value out of your current efforts and operations.
However, I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s start from the top.What is continuous improvement?
Ever corrected a spelling mistake in your processes or manuals? How about adding a new step to qualify a task that wasn’t recorded before? What about updating your method to take advantage of better tools or software?
All of these and more are examples of continuous improvement.
Continuous improvement is a method to make sure that your processes, methods, and practices are as efficient, accurate, and effective as possible. This is done (surprise, surprise) by periodically examining and improving your processes to smash bottlenecks, use the best software, and take advantage of the most efficient methods.
If you’ve ever heard of lean, kaizen, Six Sigma, or DMAIC then this will sound familiar, as continuous improvement is based on similar principles and forms a key part of both of those practices. This is because the primary objective of any changes is to reduce waste and streamline your work.
While there are many different methods for achieving continuous improvement (such as process innovation and the Deming cycle), all can be classified into one of two groups; incremental or breakthrough improvements.
Incremental vs breakthrough improvements
Continuous improvement is largely practiced using two disciplines; incremental and breakthrough improvements. These can be used interchangeably, but the best way to deploy a thorough continuous improvement program is to combine the two. By doing this you can quickly deal with smaller issues while giving larger items the care and attention they deserve.Incremental continuous improvement
Incremental continuous improvement is all about making small tweaks to a process, method, or practice to improve it as problems are found. This usually costs less and can be done much faster than using the breakthrough method, but there are a few risks and downsides to doing so.
